President’s Cast
Hello Everyone, I hope this message finds you well. Things are moving along rather quickly. As I write this the Match Browns are on. Pretty soon it will be Sulphur time and the Green Drakes will be on by the May meeting. I’ve
gotten out as often as I could and I’m not through yet. I have a Lehigh River float trip planned and I booked a day with Aaron Jasper on the Neversink. Lots of prime fly fishing will happen this month. Our learn to Fly Fish Day on Lizard Creek went very well. My main plan was to have a nice place where people new to fly fishing would have a good chance at catching fish. Lizard Creek did not disappoint! The facilities were clean and met our needs very well. Hopefully we have found a home there for the future. I really think that when the word gets out we will have more students in attendance. The trout are there and they were rising all day long. There are miles of stream available but I think we only merely scratched the surface. Who knows, it’s hard to leave fish to look for other fish. That’s a good problem to have! I personally have been growing in the sport. I got my Dyna King Ultimate Indexer. I really like it. It’s like moving from a VW beetle to a Cadillac! Does my choice of rides date me? Anyway, indexed rotation, a bobbin cradle, midge jaws, Oh My! I do believe this will allow me to tie more types of flies. I know that flies 18 and smaller were very tough to tie on my Renzetti Apprentice. The accessories are soon to follow. A whiting hackle gage, a profile plate and a natural light should make it really a pleasure! I also learned about the Clic magnifying glasses. I
purchased the 3x version in tortoise shell. They are really nice. I’m going to look like a real pro at the vice. I’ll be able to leave my magnifying light contraption at home from now on! Another area I’ve been getting all the way into is contact nymphing. This area of our sport seems to be growing with no end in sight. I’m building my arsenal of nymphing rods and I’m moving in the lighter and smaller end of the spectrum. It’s a fascinating endeavor and it’s lots of fun when you get the hang of it. Rods like the Maxia 10’0wt. And the Master Nymph Bellator 10’2wt are on my wish list. I think some Cortland Competition Nymphing Line in .017 and some 25lb OPST Lazer Line with a Spanish nymphing leader should be the right medicine to fish those size 22 Nymphs. What do you think? Does it seem like I got a bad case of nymphing fever. I might even be a Nymphomaniac, oh my goodness! Somebody help me! We should have an informative meeting this month as Anita Coulter will be teaching contact Nymphing. Make sure you come out to the meeting! Be sure to get out and enjoy our wonderful resource. Have fun and be safe! See you soon, Tightlines and Happy Tying Jack Walsh 281-658-9224

May Fly of the Month
“Parachute Adams” Edition: April
Written by: Jerry Coviello
Photographed By: Jerry Coviello
Tier: Jerry Coviello Sometimes when fish are picky a dry fly that will float flush on the stream and land softly on the water is just the trick. Fly of the Month is created by Fly Fishers International Fly Tying Group website https://flyfishersinternational.org/Tying/Educational-Resources/Fly-of-the-Month
Materials for the Parachute Adams
Hook: Dry Fly Thread: Gray 6/0
Wing: White Calf Tail Tail: Mixed Grizzly and Brown
Body: Muskrat Gray Hackle: Brown and Grizzly
12 Flies and Lies
Step 1
Attach thread, wrap thread base
over half of the hook and bring
thread back to 1/3 of the hook
shank
Step 2
Select and clean a small bunch of calf tail fibers, stack them to make sure the tips are even. Measure them to be as long as the shank of the hook
Step 3 Tie in the calf tail fibers at the 1/3 of the hook shank position.
13 Flies and Lies
Step 4 Lift the Calf Tail tips up, put a thread dam in front to get the wing to secure the wing upright. Now wrap your thread around the post of the wing
Step 5 Wrap back towards the bend, lift the waste material of the calf tail, and with your scissors cut at an angle.
Step 6 Select a brown and grizzle hackle strip the webby material from the stem for the tie in point. Attach the hackles in front of the wing post with the hackles to the far side. Allow some stem length so you can bind the hackle stems to the wing post as you wrap the tying thread up the post and back down. Be sure to position the hackles so the barbs will have the shiny side up when you wrap the hackle counter-clockwise around the post
14 Flies and Lies
Step 7 Take Brown and Grizzle hackle fibers for the tail and mix them. Secure them at the bend of the hook. Then trip the waste.
Step 8
Select some natural muskrat
dubbing and spin it onto the tying
thread. Use a sparse amount that
gets a little thicker as you spin
away from the shank. Wrap the
dubbing forward to form a slightly
tapered body. Be sure to carry
the dubbing far enough forward
to cover the shank under the post.
Wrap dubbing in front of the wing
post almost to the eye of the hook
Step 9 Wrap the hackles counter-clockwise around and down the post. You will want the shiny sides of the hackle to be facing up and the dull sides facing down when you wrap the hackles. Be sure there is enough dubbing under the post
15 Flies and Lies
Step 10 You can either wrap the hackles one at a time or both together. I chose to wrap them together. Make 3 wraps of the hackle. Then tie them off at the eye of the hook. Pull tight to the post. Then trim the hackle tips.
Step 11
Whip finish
Step 12 Finished Notes: By wrapping the hackles counter clockwise when you secure the hackle at the end your thread will brush the hackle fibers away and not get caught in the wraps of thread.
