New Faces of 2012—Board Comings and GoingsBy John Hennes ’51

Changes are the lifeblood of an organization. New faces bring new ideas. Several changes have taken place in our association this year.

At the October 22 Annual Meeting three new board members were elected: Mag-gie (Nichols) Birch ’64, Doug Streib ’68 and John Wedeberg ’63. Also, last fall two loyal and long-time alumni workers stepped down: Barbara (Wilson) Nelson ’58 from the board and Whitney Mason ’80 as the KUAY editor. At this time we also have a new KUAY Editor, Elizabeth (Weeks) Pankey ’68, who will be showing her skills in this is-sue and will introduce herself in a separate article.

New Board Members:

Marguerite (Nichols) Birch ’64, who goes by Maggie, lives in Ballard. She attended several Queen Anne schools, including West Queen Anne and Warren Avenue, before attending our fair high school. She is a retired credit and collection manager of many years. Two of her favorite teachers were Mr. Ed Ottum and Mr. Howard Mickelson. Among her travels she especially remembers standing on the Great Wall of China.Doug Streib ’68 attended Briarcliff, Catharine Blaine and Queen Anne, subsequently attending

Shoreline Jr. College. At Queen Anne he was on the Student Council and sang with the Cantorians. He remembers Mr. Jay Pollette, Ed Billodue and Bob Morris in particular. Singing led him to entertain-ing with local groups Apple Pie, The Wailers and Merrilee Rush among others. The restaurant business has been his grown-up vocation, including owning The Pumphouse in Bellevue. Doug is an avid golfer. He lives in Tacoma.

John Wedeberg ’63 attended John Hay and was President of QA Junior High in 1959-60. He lives in Redmond and has worked primarily as a self-employed Manufacturer’s Representative in the pleasure marine industry. Okay, let’s get my education history out of the way first: Bri-arcliff, Blaine, QA’68, U of Arizona (Studio Arts), Shoreline CC (Visual Communications Technology), and Famous Art-ists Correspondence School in Cartooning. Plenty of seminars, workshops and life experiences add more synapses. Organiza-tions I am in or have been a part of include Cartoonists North-west (2x Pres.), Graphic Artists Guild-Seattle Chapter (Nat’l Rep, Treas.), International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA) and Snohomish County Women Business Owners Assoc. (SCWBOA). Professionally I’ve worked in a print shop doing layout, paste-up and typesetting; computer graphics for a local Bike Rack Manufacturer; but mostly dba e.w.p.Originals as a freelance hu-morous illustrator and caricature artist. Also spent over 25 years creating, market-

ing and shipping ewp’s P.R.Cards, a line of whimsigull follow-up greeting cards for the boating industry.

Newsletter editing experience featured three groups: CNW Penstuff, SCWBOA and Trinity Parish Church in Seattle. Laying out a newsletter is like putting to-gether a jigsaw puzzle without the picture; the more pieces the more complex the puzzle. My engineer hus-band is my best proofreader. Hope you all enjoy this puzzle.

By the way I’ve been happily married for 40+ years, have one grown daughter, two grandchildren, one cat and a cozy home in Shoreline.

Cheerleading Uniform DonationSubmitted by LDZobrist ’62

The sister of Randi (Scheuer) Mezich ’78 of Seattle was browsing at a garage sale last year when she spotted a QAHS cheerleading uniform for sale. It had the name of Sybie sewn on the front and a Class of ’78 pin. Randi’s sister bought the uniform and donated it to us for our memorabilia collection. Af-ter a little investigation we learned that the uniform belonged to cheerleader Sybilla “Sybie” Brown ’78. Checking

What a year was 2011. Parties all year long, goals reached, and good friends visited regularly. My

50th anniversary party at the Downtown

event in my life where people came who represented all the different groups to which I belong and with family members on hand to share in the moment. It was truly a moment to savor, but was followed by something later in the year which dumbfounded me!

I was given an award at my Class of 1961 Reunion at the Overlake Golf and Country Club, the evening of October 1, 2011. After awards were presented, I expected to give my little spiel as to how Queen Anne received its name. Instead, my classmate and co-committee member, Tom Magnuson, began a third award announcement and then hit me with a true “Gotcha!” by referring to me. (see details in the ‘61 reunion article) I was stunned, but only momentarily – since I still had to give my little spiel. I did, thanking the committee for the award, (and secretly hoping I could continue to live up to its intent) and then continuing with the story of Queen Anne as a neighborhood name. (You may ask me any time what that story is).

May 2012 be a great year for the

here’s hoping for good health and good times for us all! Oh, yes, and to my wonderful, thoughtful classmate

school colors with “QA” on one end and “61” on the other; it has been a godsend in these chilly months since our reunion. So thanks from my heart and appreciation mode.

WHO’S NEWS Compiled by Kim R. Turner ’61

Retiring Board Members:

Barbara (Wilson) Nelson ’58 has served the alumni association for 19 years, in-cluding as President from 2001-07 and Vice-President the last three years. She has been a stalwart supporter and a clear voice calling for more action and less talk. She now spends much of the year in Arizona and is no longer able to participate. We will miss her lively presence and cheerful outlook.

Whitney Mason ’80 is a Lt. Colonel in the US Marine Corps Reserves, after serving eleven years on active duty around the world. She is now a Real Estate Profes-sional with Coldwell Banker Bain. She at-tended Magnolia Elementary and has her BS and MS degrees from Northwestern University. She took on the job of KUAY Editor/Page designer in 2004 after Hal Will ’44 could no longer do it and con-tinued producing an outstanding newslet-ter. Her realtor work and her many vol-unteer activities have made it difficult to continue as editor. The Association is very appreciative of her years of service to the Grizzly cause.

(Board news continued from page 1)

1930’s: We just received word of the death of Evelyn (Molander) Norman ’32, who won the Treat Cup in 1932 for the Queen Anne High School Oration Cham-pionship. This was an annual award for a number of years. Evelyn died in Salem, Oregon. She had been a minister in the Assembly of God Church before becom-ing a bride and mother, and remained active within that church until her death. Bert Pound ’34, was written up in the Seattle Times. (see page 12).

1940’s: Donna (McCarthy) Quigley ’43, is living on Mercer Island. Her sister Yvonne (McCarthy) Carrier ’42, is living in San Diego. Their sister Patricia (Mc-Carthy) Hauge ’52, died in 2002. Neal Crawford ’43 is one of several volunteers restoring the Lockheed YO-3A at the Museum of Flight Restoration Center at Paine Field, Everett, WA. The YO-3A was a Viet-nam era reconnaissance aircraft that was very quiet.

1950’s: Virginia (Callison) Dolan ’51, is returning from her latest voyage. This time she visited South Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, sailing on the Ocean Princess through the Arafura Sea and along the north coast of Australia, Sydney

Auckland, New Zealand, followed by Fiji, and Hilo, Hawaii. Quite a world traveler, and a gifted writer. Her e-mails make one envious! Barbara (Bertsch) Eckley ’52 is working on the Class of 1952’s upcoming reunion, arranging a tour of our former high school as part of their reunion. Gordon Conger ’53 continues a career in law. Don Bushell ’52 met with Doug and Marilyn (Markoff) Southern, (both) ’60, in Ant-arctica last February! Another example of the small world. Dan Haw ’56, has built a house on Lake Lawrence near Yelm, WA. He retired 20 years ago but enjoys good health and an active life volunteering in his community.

1960’s: Sylvia (Welsh) Cummings ’60 has sent us two great -

ebrating their 50th wedding anniversary (Christmas 2010). The second photo is from her 4th birthday party and includes Grover Anderson ’61 (aged 3) beside her in the front row; her brother John Welsh ’58, stands sec-ond from left in the back row. Grover’s brother Gary Anderson ’58, stands on the right end of the back row. Others

also attended her latest birthday party! Friends forever. Marilyn (Miller) Walt-mire ’63 lives in Tucson, AZ. Kathleen “Kathi” (Barrett) Hamilton ’64 worked in Germany and Illinois before return-

-ment has not stopped her from being fully involved in volunteer work. Melvin “Mel” McNichols ’65, has been a U.S.

College, University of Southern California and Ohio State University! He now lives in Salem, Oregon, breeding and training Arabian horses! Brigitte (Gordon) Jorge-son ’66, is retired from work in the Federal Government, and is living in Charlotte, NC. Melva (Venis) Wicklund ’69, lives in Bothell with her husband, two chick-

busy enjoying retirement. Steve Joshua ’69 has lived in the U.K. since 1975, where

BOB HOUBREGS GOLF TOURNAMENT

A HUGE SUCCESSby Dee Hawkes ’54

A golfer’s game is seldom easy, but playing in the Bob Houbregs Queen Anne Golf Classic makes it more fun. On a sunny September Monday, over eighty golfers hit long drives and made putts on the prestigious Everett Golf and Country Club course. A full day of activity demonstrated that the Grizzly “spirit” is still alive. Once again, Coaches Walt Bone and Walt Milroy acted as the grand marshals and gave

with dedicated volunteers, the tourna--

ward, the awards buffet banquet enter-tained those in attendance while prizes, awards, and gag gifts were given away.

Asked back again, the 2012 tournament will return to Everett on Monday, Sep-tember 17th, and it will be open to all golfers regard-less of level. There is also talk that another MOQA golf tournament will be held in late April or May at the White Horse Golf Course in Kingston. A total package is being put together with a to-tally different format. This all adds up to two big golf outings when guys and gals can come to play with old friends. If interested in playing or just hanging out with fellow Grizzlies, then contact Craig Smith at [email protected] or Roger Jensen at [email protected]

MOQA* News & Events [*Men of Queen Anne]

CHANGING OF THE GUARD Dwight “Dee” Hawkes ’54 has retired as founder and president of the Men of

Queen Anne. Although he is stepping aside as president, he will continue to serve on the board. Craig Smith ’69 will be the new president.

The MOQA was founded when a C-118 transport carrying ten crew members crashed in the Aleutians on December 11, 1973. Lt. Commander George Varver, QA class of ’54, was among this group. The crew perished on the side of a mountain on Great Sitkin Island, about 25 miles northeast of Adak Naval Air Station. Af-ter the memorial service for George Varver at Demetrios Orthodox Church, Dee Hawkes initiated lunch meetings with his classmates during each Christmas season to keep the memory of Varver alive.

The luncheons started to grow as it became evident that men from other classes who knew George wanted to come and also to honor other Grizzlies who had passed away. Over the last 38 years, some 41 classes have been represented while coming together for fun, fellowship, and to honor lost classmates.

In the late nineties, the MOQA developed a deeper purpose and started to raise money for athletic scholarships to be dedicated to the relatives of QA graduates. The organization joined the Alliance for Education Foundation, sponsored by the Seattle Public Schools, and initiated the Bob Houbregs QA Golf Classic. Both the Christmas Luncheon and Bob’s golf tournament are now Queen Anne traditions that everyone involved enjoys.

For several years, money for scholarships was also acquired through the Calendar Girls project. Putting together a yearly Queen Anne Calendar was a labor of love for Linda (Fouts) McCullough and Patricia (Purcell) Turnbull, both ’54, and much thanks goes to all of the graduates who posed to help raise scholarship money. At the present, however, the Calendar Girls of Queen Anne is no longer in produc-tion. Perhaps in the future there may be others who might want to start it all over again.

Craig Smith ’69 will take over the reins in 2012. His enthusiasm for keeping the Grizzly “spirit” alive is contagious. Craig has been gearing up to lead and carry the banner for the new looking MOQA into the future. Although it’s long overdue, the women of QA are now very wel-come and encouraged to join with the men in the goals of this organi-zation. Dee will stay on the board as an advisor.

38th annual Men of Queen Anne (MOQA) Christmas Luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at the Rock Salt Steakhouse on Lake Union. There were at least 100 Grizzlies, including sever-al women, at the annual event. Coach Walt Milroy, now in his 90s and with the same sly sense of humor as always, was honored with the Edo Vanni Spirit Award and many of those present told stories about his time at Queen Anne (1947-1959). The award was presented by Ralph Vanni ’54, nephew of Edo Vanni ’37, who shared baseball stories about Edo as well as Coach Milroy.

The MOQA Scholarship for 2011 was awarded to Tess Cathey, daughter of Bart Cathey ’78. Tess is currently a soph-omore and playing women’s basketball at Shoreline Community College. She plans on attending Western Washing-ton University next year.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS: THE QAHS ALUMNI ASSOC.

By Kim R. Turner ’61The Fall 2011 Luncheon celebrated 30 years of our alumni

association. The association got its start with the announce-ment of the coming closure of the school in spring of 1981. It seemed like a good time to recall all the great events and deeds done by multiple generations of high school students. A big gathering/program was set for June 6th. A retrospective of the 70+ years of school plays and musicals called “Bringing Down the Curtain,” was held on that late afternoon/evening. More than 15,000 alums from Queen Anne returned for that

day and night’s festivities and sorrows of the “Last Hurrah”.Fred Pettersen ’31, and Maxine (Amundson) McMahan ’45 spearheaded the cel-

ebration, and later the formation of the Association. After the school closure, they met with other alums in July of 1981 at the Seattle Yacht Club to begin the alumni group and decide on what it would/could do and what purposes it would have. The formation of a scholarship committee followed. During its 30 years, 11 presidents, 12 vice-presidents, 7 treasurers, 14 recording secretaries, and 6 cor-

include: Fred Pettersen ’31, Maxine (Amundson) McMahan ’45, Rick Malsed ’63, John Hennes ’51, Geneva (McKinstry) Lalanne ’45, Glo (Gleason) Holcomb ’46, Pat (Schage) Nordlund ’38, Bill Tobin ’46, Ed Bol ’81, Barbara (Wilson) Nelson ’58, and Kim Turner ’61the 20 years of service given by Frances (Chapman) Farris ’35.

On the other hand, subcommittees such as the KUAY editorial committee and scholarship committee seem to have been concentrated in the hands of several of the above-listed names as well as Kerry McMahan ’54, L D Zobrist ’62, John Hennes ’51 and Hal Will ’44 whose editorship of the KUAY drew others into

to a mere 4,000 alums, people who had signed up at the Last Hurrah. We now mail to over 11,000.

TREASURE FOUND BY QUEEN ANNE REPORTER

Brooks Burford ’70, had a wonderful experience while visiting a demolition site in 2010. Let him tell the story.

when I was a Captain of the Briarcliff Safety Patrol in the 6th grade. Briar-cliff Elementary at 39th West and West Dravus was in heavy demolition. I was stepping through the wreckage on a Sunday afternoon into what was left

large closet room where we stored our

belts in assigned cubby holes. One of the wall cabinets had apparently been crow-barred off the wall and this tag-board sheet with black crayon had drift-

behind a cabinet all these years. I turned the corner, walked in, and there it was, at my feet … this sheet of tagboard with black crayon showing the Morning Crew from 1963 .. just waiting for me to retrieve it. The next day the whole shebang was torn down.

“The names listed are Greg DeBruler, Paul Elliott, Randy Gibbons, Ronnie Marblestone, Tom Cook, Doug Wycoff and Shawn Gillette. Ron and his family moved to San Mateo (CA). Randy died in 2009. The six others graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1970, as well as myself.

“To my knowledge this old document and the names scrawled on it in black Crayola are the only tangible remains of Briarcliff Elementary. Lexington Fine Homes is still attempting to build 39 houses on the 10 acre site.”

Brooks V. Burford lives in Portland, OR.

A Patches Pal Shows His LoveWe get letters from alums who want to share their experiences with other grads. Below is a charming bit of local history tied to Seattle’s beloved J.P. Patches, everyone’s childhood (or later) favorite clown.

My name is Carl Lovgren, class of ’74. Grow-ing up a Patches Pal was a great experience. His show was right up the street. It wasn't until about 12 years ago that I became very close friends with J.P. (aka Chris Wedes). As many times before, I would go to J.P.’s shows and appearances just to see him or shake his hand. (Every Patches Pal knows it's like seeing Santa Claus at any age.) One appearance in Edmonds he asked me what I did for a living? I told him I'm a contractor and he put me to work on his house. I was star struck at first, then he sat me down and started talking. WOW! Talking with both J.P. and his wife was just like sitting and talking to my aunt and uncle.

“After working at his house for awhile he asked me if I would like to drive him to appearances? What! J.P. wants me to be his driver? This guy is an icon. Yes! Yes! Yes! If you thought the clown was funny on TV, driving in his car and listening to his stories were ten times the fun.

“I had an idea many years before even meeting J.P. that a statue would be a great way to show him how much all the Patches Pals loved him. After getting to know him I just had to get the project built. It didn't take long before a committee was formed and an artist was found.

“The statue was built in a year! It stands in Fremont down the street from the ‘Waiting for the Interurban’ statue. Look on the hat to see Love grin with a light bulb over the name. Also look on the ICU2-TV for all the people involved in the project.”

I'm one Lucky Patches Pal! Carl Lovgren ’74, www.allmixeduprock.com

Ed.Note: KIRO TV studios were in the Federal Old Line Insurance Building on QA Ave., near Lovgren’s childhood home. The statue of JP and Gertrude was sculpted by Kevin Pettelle and was dedicated Aug. 17, 2008. Thousands of Seattle area citizens and businesses donated to its construction. JP, who is now 84, made his nal public appearance last fall.

MAGNOLIA FEST 2011 Kim R. Turner ’61

A rather disappointing 8 people car-ried the Queen Anne banner in this year’s Magnolia street parade, July 30, 2011. We had heard that a larger group was expecting to join us in the march, but they never materialized. This was sad, particularly since our graduate Kathi Goertzen ’76 was Grand Marshal of the parade. Kathi underwent her sixth brain-tumor surgery last February and is progressing steadily. The weather cooperated nicely and the number of persons visiting our alumni booth was comparable to two years earlier when the weather was very nice.

Still, we sold logo merchandise, met a number of Queen Anne grads, and de-scendants of grads, all of whom enjoyed browsing through the annuals, finding pictures of themselves and/or their par-ents or grandparents. Thanks again to everyone who assisted in keeping the booth running! (You all know who you are). This year’s Magnolia Summerfest Parade will be Saturday, August 4, 2012.

Grizzlies Roam Summer PicnicBy Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

The Queen Anne Grizzlies came out of hibernation on August 14th for the annual Summer picnic at Gas-works Park.

The very many bears were well fed and watered. Joe Samione ’62, Phil Krutsinger ’63, Katharyn Gaylord ’63, “beared” (i.e., manned) the original grill from Al’s Hamburger Place on the Ave. And there was much more, besides the hot dogs, hamburgers (partly provided by Joe Samione ’62) and pop—many delicious salads, casseroles and desserts. No campsites had to be raided. It was a lovely afternoon to be out of the cave!

life melt away quickly. Spring is right around the corner.

MEMORIALS continued

Goodbye to Two Faculty MembersRoscoe Bass: Died November 8, 2011, age 85, while visiting relatives in Kansas City. He and his twin brother Robert Bass were 1943 graduates of the Pittsburg, Kansas High School, and both became teachers. Roscoe began work in Seattle as a substitute teacher and at Queen Anne High in the late 1950’s before joining

High School before retiring in 1994. We were glad to see him at our spring luncheon last year.

Ethel Smith, longtime Queen Anne teacher and counselor, died October 26, 2011, in her sleep. She was 96. John Doty, former

service, at her request. Some of you will remember her vividly and her presence at our last open house of the high school building a few years ago. She still looked basically unchanged, tall, willowy, and with presence.

A Toast to Survival:

The Class of ’51 Sixtieth Reunion By John Hennes’51 Seattle’s long gray summer was still hanging

around on September 18, 2011, when the Class of 1951 celebrated its 60th anniversary at the Broad-moor Golf Club in Seattle. Some 93 grads and their spouses/guests enjoyed a delightful brunch and much conversation. Emcee Douglas Weis eld entertained the group and had all the grads indi-vidually introduce themselves. At each table was a nostalgia list he had compiled (remember Play-land, Senator Claghorn, the Jolson Story, savings stamps…?). Stephen DeForest garnered some rue-ful laughs with a recital of “you know you’re get-ting old…” jokes. Alas, too many of those made sense.

Each grad was given a Class Directory with con-tact information and a list of deceased and miss-ing classmates, compiled by LD Zobrist ’62 from the alumni database. The numbers show that, of a total class list of 361, 20% are known deceased and 17% missing. Of the 225 with addresses in the database almost 30% were able to attend. It is re-warding to our organizing committee to know that those who can attend make the effort to do so.

The Reunion Committee consisted of Marilyn (Knight) Brashen, Marleine (Rois) Buchanan, Mar-ilyn (Butterworth) Cottingham, Stephen DeFor-est, Jean (Jorgensen) Fisken, John Hennes, Dodie (Turner) Janisch, Donna (Putnam) Madden and Douglas Weis eld. Numerous donations and care-ful budgeting resulted in a surplus of about $1200, all of which was donated to the alumni association for scholarships and operations.

Those who attended were delighted to see their

years. As we move further into our senior years we cherish even more our times together and our memories of years at Queen Anne High.

Cheersheers

Grizzly HonoreesOur fellow Grizzlies stretch across the world, but many still live in the Puget Sound area and are contributors to our local community. Every year a few of these are recognized for their contributions and below we report on four of our classmates who have made a difference and been recognized for it.

Terry Howard ’52 The Museum of Flight is one of Seattle’s prime tourist attractions, partly because it contains many planes that not only look good but are actually flyable. Restoring historic planes has become the passion of Terry “TC” Howard ’52, who over the last seven years has contributed almost 8000 hours to restoring several aircraft, in particular the first Boeing 727-100. In Octo-ber, 2011, TC was honored as a Legacy Volun-

teer at a ceremony at the museum, where he is Crew Chief and Quality Assurance Manager for the 727-100 project. Besides the 727 he has worked on B-25s and the Boeing 247D restoration. The work is carried out at the Museum of Flight restora-tion Center at Paine Field, Everett.

Gertrude (Johnson) Peoples ’50“She’s a pioneer,” says Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar, speaking of Gertrude (Johnson) Peo-ples ’50. Gertrude is credited with starting the country’s first academic-support office for col-lege student athletes. She was the first woman recruiter for athletics at a major U.S. university. Gertrude, now recovering from breast cancer treatments, still works part time at the UW. As an African-American student counselor she has helped hundreds of Husky athletes navigate school and life after school. An Aug. 11, 2011 Washington Athletics Newsletter wrote extensively of her influence on the Husky generations and the love and affection they all have for her. She’s not just a treasure, she’s the soul of Husky football.

Bert Pound ’34 Bert was featured in the Seattle Times (11/4/11) in his role as a drummer for the University of Washington Alumni Band. Since 1980 he has done a tribute to Husky football scoring by doing a one-arm push-up for each point the Dogs score, plus one extra. A ballpark figure of his push-ups runs around 15,000 since he began the tradition. He has been a boon to the Grizzly cause, as well as UW. The Alumni Band formed in 1977 and Bert joined soon after. Every Husky fan knows the “push up guy”. Thanks to sev-eral people who also noted this article, and to Dennis Fee ’61, who sent an extra copy.

Robert D. Welden ’63Bob was honored in November by the National Organization of Bar Counsel. Robert retired last September, and the Resolution was given in honor of his 41

-es, “NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the National Organization of Bar Counsel does hereby express its gratitude to Robert D. Welden and expresses its hope that our association with him will continue into the future.” The above was adopted at its Annual Meeting, held in Toronto, Ontario, 6 August, 2011. Rob-ert became General Counsel for the Washington State Bar Association in 1988 and has served in that capacity for 23 years.

…. And a Good Time Was Had By All: Class of 1961 50th Anniversary Reunion

By Kim Turner ’61 October 1, 2011, a partly gray day,

was the date selected for the 1961 Griz-zlies’ class reunion, which was held at the Overlake Golf and Country Club in Clyde Hill. Some 200+ attendees had several hours of catching up, being totally happy, and posing for photos. Some took advantage of the 1962 Se-attle World’s Fair reminiscences; oth-ers were drawn to the cameras for re-membering days, classes, teachers and events at the school which will be made available as DVD’s (I would have preferred a video tape). The repast laid out for the throng consisted of a grape-fruit and lettuce salad, another with toma-toes, wild rice combos, fresh halibut chunks, with a mild veggie/salsa topping, and de-licious pepper steak, in lovely thick slices, and properly prepared. A raspberry crisp served as a light dessert, and the full bar was well attended.

Several well-deserved floral gifts were presented to Donna (Linville) Robinson, Robert Ostling and one other. Then Kim Turner, who was to give a short talk on how Queen Anne got its name, was hit with a “Gotcha!” Tom Magnuson, em-cee, was to introduce Kim, spoke about how one other award had to be given, to one who has done much more for the Class of 1961 than serve on the reunion committee, one who keeps everyone in-formed of what’s going on, and what is new with all of us – Kim Turner. Two lovely ladies from the committee, Ja-net (Galt) Kvistad, and Corky (Andrews) Stark, came up carrying a beautiful glass trophy, all angles and prismatic, look-ing like a cross between an iceberg and a mountain. Etched onto the back are the words: “In Appreciation to Kim Turner, #1 Alum, Queen Anne H.S. 1961.”

CASH ONLY BAR & RAFFLE

Over 100 alums and faculty gathered at the Seattle Yacht Club Saturday, October 22, 2011 for an afternoon of really great

-maraderie. President Turner gave a short talk on the history of the Queen Anne High School Alumni Association, which was celebrating its 30th year of existence. The program continued with the basket

Kerry McMahan ’54 was assisted by Gary Dederer ’55.

Some of the lucky winners in the auc-tion included Helena (Butter eld) Rowse ’64, who successfully bid on a “one-of-a-kind” logo t-shirt, and one of the named

George Lamoreux’ ’73 Grizzly Inn. Craig Smith ’69, success-fully bid on another of the Grizzly Inn bricks as well as one of the bricks from

the Queen Anne High Boys’ Gym/Au-ditorium building complex. Former fac-ulty member Victor Anderson acquired the Queen Anne High classroom clock donated by Meri (Gundrum) England ’57 and Don Hanson. Craig Smith was also successful bidder on the Grizzly letter-man’s jacket.

John Doty (faculty), Craig Smith, Jan An-derson, Jackie (Moore) Zobrist ’63, Victor Anderson, Scott Mayhew ’68, Pat (Sykes) Ronhaar ’47, Gretchen (Surry) Monteith ’47 and Kim Turner ’61.

One surprise attendee was Penny Sake-llaris, one of the lunchroom attendants who worked at Queen Anne until it closed,

School. The luncheon concluded with the Grizzly Fight Song and Alma Mater.

Needless to say, I was blown away to receive this, as I had not been expecting any acco-lade. I felt that others on the committee had given far more of their time than I had, but the success of the event proves that we all helped make it work. Earlier in the evening, one of my classmates,

who prefers to remain anonymous, presented me with a beautiful thick winter neck scarf, one side done in maroon with letters in or-ange, “Q.A.” The other side was orange, with maroon numbers,”61.” I will wear it with deep affection for such thoughtfulness. Everyone

was schmoozing and celebrating each other’s presence until around 11:30 p.m.

Long distance attendees included Todd Hullin and his wife Susan, who came from

Sue Anderson, who has come from the Hilo, Ha-waii area in previous years, now has a Wash-ington State address again. Many memories of our years at QA hit me during the course of the evening, and many more in the week since. It was a wonderful event, one which we will not soon forget. Plans are under way for our 55th, or at least a more regular gathering of members of our class.
