4-H Easter Egg Hunt

It was a beautiful morning for the 4– H Easter Egg Hunt on March 30th. We had the hunt all around the Art & Crafts Building this year, which made finding the eggs more difficult for the 6 and over group. Thanks to G.P.S. members, the prize eggs were strategically hidden throughout the area. Approximately 35 youth scampered about to find the 550 hidden eggs.

California Agriculture License Plates

This is a project spearheaded by the CDFA that begun about 5 years ago. The plates are being produced and can be ordered (http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg17.pdf). Proceeds from the license plate sales will be used to support agricultural education programs. A small portion of the plate fee (about $1 per plate) will go into a fund every year when a plate is renewed or a new plate purchased. The fund will be used to issue grants from CDFA to organizations doing agricultural education. The grant eligibility and distribution process are currently being determined. Please help spread the word about the new “California Agriculture” license plates. This is an important movement in raising the profile of agriculture and helping to support the next generation of agriculture industry’s innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders. For additional information and FAQs visit: https://secure.cdfa.ca.gov/egov/calagplate/.

You will work with your committee to decide on the 4-H float decora-tions and decorate the float with the help of other 4-Hers who will be participating in the parade. If you are interested please stop by or contact the 4-H of-fice (707-464-4711) to pick up a event chairperson applica-tion. All applications are due on May 22nd by 1:00 p.m. to the 4-H office. Suggestions for Successful Livestock Exhibits

1. Gather grooming aids, stall or pen cleaning tools, feed and

other items together at least a week prior to weigh-in. Label with name of owner. Try on your uniform, clean, press, and don’t lose it. Make a list of all needed items to be loaded the day of the Fair.

2. Know how to load the exhibit animal. Start early! Keep

stress for humans and livestock to the bare minimum. Have telephone numbers for the Project leader and other project members handy; then, if the truck won’t start you ’ l l have someone to cal l for assistance.

3. Practice grooming skills several times during the spring.

Begin preparing the outer appearance of the animal according to the Project leader’s instructions.

4. Practice showmanship techniques every chance you get.

Animals will respond better to a familiar routine even when confronted with many other strange animals.

A 4-H Fable There once was a boy who won ribbons, mostly blue “You’ve seen how a business meeting is run; And came home from the fair with a big trophy too. This knowledge will help you in years to come. With a voice glad and proud he said to his Dad, You’ve conquered the fear of addressing a crowd; “Tis the very best year that I’ve ever had.” You’ve learned how to stand up & talk nice and loud. Said his very wise Dad, “Son, I’d like to hear “Patience you’ve learned in your projects too, Why you think that this was such a fine year.” As well as your skills that will always help you. “Why, Dad you well know all the prizes I’ve won; You’ve learned the fine feeling it gives you to lend How I’ve come out on top in most things I’ve done.” A glad helping hand to a stranger or friend.” “Just look at the ribbons that hang on my wall, “You’ve learned to cooperate with majority rule, And think of the money I’ve made since last fall To give in with grace and to not be a fool From premium checks and a big auction price. Who must always have his very own way. You can’t help but think cash and ribbons are nice.” Be it in club work, in school or at play.” But the man said, “My son, you’re not thinking right. “You’ve learned how to lose without making a beef; Blue ribbons, tis true, are better than white; You know the judge judges to his best belief. But ribbons will fade and trophies grow old. You’ve learned how to win without boasting too loud; Money’s soon spent, and fame soon grows cold.” A kid can lose friends if he’s overly proud.” “The important things, Son, are not ribbons or pins, “These are the things most important to you. And sometimes it’s really the loser who wins. You’ll remember and use them all your life through. Now here are the things most important, it’s true They’ll help you become a might fine man. Your 4-H experience has accomplished for you.” They’ll do more for you than a prize ever can.”

Key Assets in 4-H Youth Development BUILDING SUPPORTIVE

RELATIONSHIPS Current research indicates that there are five youth development practices or supports and opportunities that young people should experience in all major settings in which they spend time, including 4-H. These five supports and opportunities include: 1) safety; 2) supportive relationships; 3) meaningful youth participation; 4) community involvement; and 5) skill building activities. This month we will focus on relationship building. Relationship building is the development of caring, supportive relationships between adults and young people, and among young people and their peers. Research tells us that the presence of supportive and caring adults in a young person’s life is the leading indicator of his/her future success. Relationship building means that young people: • Experience emotional and practical support from adults and peers • Experience guidance from adults • Build knowledge of adults and peers Here are five things you can do now to encourage relationship building: 1. Make sure that each young person has one adult who know him/her well. 2. Begin each meeting with a check-in circle and let each person speak briefly. 3. Develop group agreements. 4. Hold a conflict resolution training for young people. 5. Participate in a training that focuses on group process and collaborative learning. Here are a few indicators to know if you are creating a supportive environment for building relation-ship? • All youth are greeted by adults. • Youth are asked about their interests, skills, and passions (sparks!) • During activities, adults generally smile, use friendly gestures, and make eye contact. • Youth exhibit inclusive relationship with everyone in the program, including newcomers. • To help youth understand and resolve conflicts and negative behavior, they are encouraged to

examine the relationship between their actions and consequences. • Youth have structured opportunities to get to know each other. Set at least two goals for building relationships in your work with young people and assess whether these indicators are present. All youth seek to learn and grow but they have needs that must be met - building relationships is one of those needs. Next month we will explore participation.

Build a Healthy Meal 10 tips for healthy meals

A healthy meal starts with more vegetables and fruits and smaller portions or protein and grains. Think about how you can adjust the portions on your plate to get more of what you need without too many calories. And don’t forget dairy - make it the beverage with your meal or add fat-free or low-fat dairy products to your plate.

make half your plate veggies and fruits Vegetables and fruits are full of nutrients and may help promote good health. Choose, red, orange, and dark-green vegetables

such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli. add lean protein Choose protein foods, such as lean beef and pork, or chicken, turkey, beans, or tofu. Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate.

include whole grains Aim to make at least half your grains whole grains. Look for the words “100% whole grain” or “100% whole wheat” on the food label. Whole grains

provide more nutrients, like fiber, than refined grains. don’t forget the dairy Pair your meal with a cup of fat-free of low-fat milk. They provide the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories. Don’t drink milk? Try

soymilk (soy beverage) as your beverage or include fat-free or low-fat yogurt in your meal.

avoid extra fat Using heavy gravies or sauces will add fat and calories to otherwise healthy choices. For example, steamed broccoli is great, but avoid topping it with cheese sauce. Try other

options, like a sprinkle of low-fat parmesan cheese or a squeeze of lemon.

take your time Savor your food. Eat slowly, enjoy the taste and textures, and pay attention to how you feel. Be mindful. Eating very quickly may cause

you to eat too much.

use a smaller plate Use a smaller plate at meals to help with portion control. That way you can finish your entire plate and feel satisfied without overeating.

take control of your food Eat at home more often so you know exactly what you are eating. If you eat out, check and compare the nutrition information. Choose healthier options such as baked instead of fried.

try new foods Keep it interesting by picking out new foods you’ve never tried before, like mango, lentils, or kale. You may find a new favorite! Trade fun and tasty recipes with friends or find them

online.

satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way Indulge in a naturally sweet dessert dish - fruit! Serve a fresh fruit cocktail or a fruit parfait made with yogurt. For a hot dessert,

bake apples and top with cinnamon. DG TipSheet No. 7
