Who could have asked for a better day to participate in the Charitable and Educa-tional Trust Walk-a-thon? The sun was warm, the venue was terrific, and the participants enjoyed their walk in the woods. Chairman Anthony Panaggio

Jr. and his committee once again provided refreshments for everyone in attendance, prizes for the winning participants, and t-shirts for all who took the time and effort to attend and help.

The winners in the Ladies

division were Carol Rossi of the Regina Margherita Di Savoia Mixed Lodge #1094 and Marisa Ranalli of the Braintree Ladies Lodge #1422. The winner in the Men’s division was Angelo Rossi, President of the Regina Margherita Di Savoia Mixed

Lodge #1094 and Chairman of the C&E Trust. The Junior Divi-sion was won by Patrick Massey, grandson of State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito. The Worcester Lodge #168 raised the most money, which is all going towards the C&E Trust

99th STATE CONVENTIONVilla Roma Resort, Callicoon, NY

in the Catskill Mountains

Dear Brothers and Sisters,It’s truly amazing how quickly

four years can go by. Repre-senting the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts for the past four years as your State President has truly been an honor and a privilege for me, and for Kathy as your First Lady.

At our State Convention in June we will be electing State Offi cers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the current State Council, the Chairman of Permanent Commissions, and their commissioners for their commitment and outstanding work over the past four years. It has truly been a pleasure work-ing with such dedicated offi cers. I would also like to thank all the offi cers of fi lial lodges for their commitment and dedica-tion to the Order Sons of Italy in America.

At the 96th Annual State Convention in 2009 at the Radisson Hotel in Nashua, New Hampshire, I was elected unanimously as the 27th State President of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. At that Con-vention, I made a promise to all of the delegates and to all of my Brothers and Sisters in the Grand Lodge that this admin-

istration would be one of the hardest working ever.

We have introduced many new initiatives and programs to the Grand Lodge. We have worked to institute an estate planning initiative called “Se-curing a Lasting Legacy”. This program, through bequests or other testamentary gifts, can shape the future of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts by pro-viding information to members about making meaningful con-tributions to the Grand Lodge through estate planning.

Another successful program has been our fundraising efforts to help defray increases in the National per capita. I would like to thank Sister Florence Ferullo Kane for helping me make this fundraising effort a big suc-cess. We all know that being a member of a national organiza-tion is necessary to creating a strong and viable voice, but it also creates the responsibility of paying a per capita tax to the Supreme Lodge. Over the past four years, the Supreme Lodge has raised our per capita tax by $0.50 to $1.50 per year. The Grand Lodge of Massachu-setts, through the hard work of the State Council and suc-cessful fundraising efforts, has

been able to absorb all of the increases.

This administration has worked closely with other Italian organizations through-out the state, such as The Dante Alighieri Society, Piran-dello Lyceum, St. Cosmas and Damian Society, and many others. I would also like to thank the Consul General of Italy in Boston, Dr. Giuseppe Pastorelli, for involving the Grand Lodge in many com-mittees and functions.

It truly has been a pleasure to have worked closely with State First Vice President Carmelita Bello and State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito. Their camaraderie and hard work along with the rest of the Coun-cil was really outstanding.

Again, Kathy and I would like to thank all of our Sisters and Brothers throughout the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts; it has been great meeting you all and representing you as your State President and First Lady. May God bless you all, and God Bless the Order Sons of Italy in America.

Fraternally,James DiStefanoState President

Cari Fratelli e Sorelle,E’ davvero incredibile come

quattro anni siano trascorsi cosi’ rapidamente.

Fraternamente James DiStefano,Presidente Statale

In the three months since we introduced the partner-ship between the Benefi t Insurance Commission and Highland Financial Group we have been confronted with many questions regarding issues that are impor-tant to all of our members. In this issue of the Sons of Italy News, we are attempting to provide open and honest answers to our members’ concerns.

1. If we contact Highland Financial Group regarding personal fi nancial issues, can we be assured that our personal information will remain confi dential? This is the most important and the most frequent question we have heard.Highland Financial Group has been in business for more than 25 years. They understand the impor-tance of client confi dentiality.During our negotiations with Highland Financial Group we placed emphasis on the need for confi den-tiality in any dealings they have with OSIAMA mem-bers. The contract with Highland Financial Group requires complete confi dentiality of all interactions with OSIAMA members. Highland is not allowed to communicate any information to the offi cers or commissioners of the Benefi t Insurance Commis-sion, or to any other individuals within OSIAMA. Any violation of these confi dentiality terms and any breakdown in trust will ultimately result in termina-tion of the relationship.

2. How do we know we can trust the professionals at Highland Financial Group?Trust is probably the most diffi cult attribute to measure. The fi nancial services industry has many “snake oil salesmen” who will promise the world and then slink away into oblivion once they collect their commissions. If we are to succeed with this venture we must make sure that our members are not being conned or scammed by smooth-talking salesmen. We cannot afford to get into a partnership of this importance with people we cannot trust.Early in our conversations with Highland Financial we knew we were dealing with individuals who have a strong moral compass. Whenever I introduce High-land Financial, I like to tell the story that Luke and Matthew Sotir, the two young men who run Highland Financial, have two brothers named Mark and John.

I note that any family that names their four sons after the four Gospel-writing apostles must have a strong moral compass. Our dealings thus far with these two individuals have confi rmed that they do indeed have a strong moral compass. While the introduction of the four apostles is charm-ing, it is certainly not suffi cient for us to rely on when evaluating TRUST. What is more important is the ongoing motivation that Highland has to earn and retain our trust. Highland knows that violating the trust of any one individual client from OSIAMA will cause major reverberations with the Benefi t Insurance Commission and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, and will jeopardize the relationship that we have with them. What this means is that each of our members has a loud and strong voice in their dealings with Highland Financial. Any prob-lems that our members encounter will be escalated to the highest levels of both organizations.

3. Why do we need Highland Financial Group’s expertise? Insurance is insurance; it is pretty simple, isn’t it?Insurance used to be simple, but those days are long gone. Today there are numerous types of insur-ance products, ranging from Whole Life to Universal Life, both Indexed and Variable, and the traditional standby, Term Insurance. Each of these types of in-surance has a different role in the fi nancial security and the wealth accumulation for all of us. Depend-ing on our fi nancial status, our family situation, and numerous other factors, we need an expert to help us sort through the complex options. In today’s world we are making a serious mistake if we don’t consider all the possibilities of how to best take care of our family and our fi nancial future. We need an expert we can trust. After many months of evalua-tion we have come to the conclusion that Highland Financial Group is the expert we can all trust.

4. What if we have a simple question about a fi nancial issue? Can we turn to Highland Financial for personal advice without having to pay a fee? Do we have to be a customer in order to get their attention?Everyone who is a member of OSIAMA, and their family members, is already a “customer” of Highland Financial Group. Highland Financial understands

that the relationship with the Benefi t Insurance Commission and OSIAMA is primarily one of provid-ing assistance to our members in all our fi nancial dealings, whether it is related to our investments and insurances or providing answers to our ques-tions. If someone has a question about a fi nancial proposal they have received, if they are concerned about a possible fi nancial scam, if they need reas-surance that they are on a path to fi nancial security, or whatever their questions might be, Highland Financial Group will take the time to listen and advise. If Highland Financial is responsive to our members, they will build a successful and profi table business with OSIAMA. If they ignore our members’ requests for assistance they will eventually lose our business. Any OSIAMA member is welcome to call into the Highland Financial experts for answers to any fi nan-cial related question. Just call 617-489-0196 and ask to be put in touch with the Highland Liaison.

5. Is it appropriate for the Benefi t Insurance Commission to compete with Brothers and Sisters who are in the insurance business? The Benefi t Insurance Commission has been in business selling insurance products for more than fifty years and we have never been accused of competing with our members who happen to be in the business of selling insurance. We believe that by adding a valuable service that would otherwise be unavailable we are elevating the overall level of service we offer our members.

6. If we have questions, complaints, or compliments, who do we call? The Benefit Insurance Commission has made the success of this new venture with Highland Financial Group its top priority in the coming years. Our pledge is to provide the best service and the best value available to OSIAMA members. Any OSIAMA member who has a question or complaint is welcome to contact Anthony Panaggio, the President of the Benefi t Insurance Commission, or David Covucci, liaison to Highland Financial Group, at 617-489-0196. We promise to respond to your questions promptly.

Celebrating a hundredth birthday, though significant, hardly gains much attention nowadays. At least one bio-medical gerontologist, Aubrey de Grey, asserts that someone is alive today who will live to age 150! Can you imagine be-ing 150 years old? Though few of us will reach such advanced age, we already outlive our par-ent’s generation. Our children’s generation, in turn, will likely outlive our generation, as we add another three months to life expectancy each year. Clearly, as a group, we are living longer and longer.

Longer life expectancies im-pact our future planning. Not only do we think about dis-tributing assets post-death, but also, we must plan for the likelihood of being incapaci-tated. A greater life expectancy increases the risk that we might not be able to carry out our legal and fi nancial matters as we approach, or even surpass, our 100th birthday. Careful legal and financial planning before we blow out the birthday candles can help offset this increased risk.

Here is one example of how appropriate planning could have prevented an unfortunate crisis.

A daughter’s elderly mother continued her stay in the reha-bilitation unit weeks after the stroke left the mother temporar-

ily paralyzed. Doctors assured the daughter that the mother’s medical condition would im-prove with time. Now that the medical emergency had sub-sided, the daughter turned her attention to her mother’s fi nan-cial matters. The mother’s bills piled up neatly in the family room. The mother couldn’t even write her name. The daughter wanted to pay the bills, but her mother had not designated anyone to act as her durable power of attorney. Her mother’s social security check and pen-sion payment deposited directly into her checking account but she failed to authorize anyone to carry on her fi nancial matters in her place. The money remained in the mother’s account but no one could access the funds. If only she had signed the Durable Power of Attorney the lawyer prepared long ago. Too late for that. The daughter would need to petition the Court to be ap-pointed her mother’s Power of Attorney. All the while, the pile of bills mounted higher and higher.

Lawyers who anticipate our possible incapacity are part of the growing area of Elder Law. None of us imagines ourselves as “elderly”. Still, many of us will benefi t from taking time to plan, either for ourselves or perhaps, an already elderly parent. An Elder Lawyer an-ticipates legal diffi culties during

our lifetime and puts in place a safety net so that we and our family will be protected. Essential items include a Dura-ble Power of Attorney, a Health Care Proxy, a HIPAA Release, a Medical Directive/Living Will, and a Will. In addition, we may seek to apply for Mass Health/Medicaid, Social Security, or Veterans’ benefi ts, or appeal a denial of these benefi ts. Elder Lawyers navigate these com-plex areas and more, including claims of elder abuse, and seek-ing appointments of guardians and/or conservators.

Elder Lawyers may consult with fi nancial planners, insur-ance brokers, geriatric care managers, medical/homecare providers, realtors, move man-agers, social workers and other professionals, to service needs targeted to an individual’s situation as we inch toward 100 years old.

To fi nd an Elder Law attorney near you, go to the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) at www.naela.org or the Massachusetts Chapter of NAELA, at www.massnaela.com.

Now you can blow out your candles. Happy 100th Birthday!

Kathleen Lynch Moncata, Esq., an attorney and media-tor, focuses upon elder law and estate planning at Moncata Law Offi ce, LLC., located in South Natick, MA.

Spread some butter or margarine at bottom of baking dish (10" x 12" x 2"). Wash scallops and drain excess water. Place scal-lops in baking dish. Blend melted butter into cracker crumbs. *Spread crumbs over scallops. Pour two tablespoons of white wine in a glass with two tablespoons of clam juice or water. Sprinkle gently over cracker crumbs and scallops. Sprinkle paprika over the cracker crumbs. Cover and bake at 400°F for fi fteen or twenty minutes or until scallops are the right consistency to serve.

NOTE: *When preparing the above recipe for my husband and I,I sprinkle garlic powder over the scallops before adding the cracker crumbs and remaining ingredient. We enjoy the garlic fl avoring.

I often bake this meal in my heated toaster oven set on broil. I cover scallops with aluminum foil before placing in toaster oven. Broil for about eight to ten minutes. Then set the toaster oven to bake for the remaining time needed.
