Fern Bay. MAY-JUNE 2020 Boot-scootin’ benefits. Dancing. It’s the simple, fun and cost-free fitness that science says benefits us in more ways than one. According to multiple studies, dancing can help us combat depression and anxiety, improve our strength, balance and mobility, and even reduce our reliance on pain medication. In 2013, a team from the University of New England in New South Wales and Australian National University in Canberra recruited 41 people (aged up to 73 years and mainly well- educated) with complaints of stress, anxiety and depression. Twenty participants then took eight tango sessions of 90 minutes each over a two-week period, while the 21 in the control group were put on a waiting list for classes. At the end of the study, participants showed significant reductions in depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Satisfaction with life and self-efficacy were significantly increased. At the one-month follow-up, depression, anxiety and stress levels remained reduced. The research team concluded that a brief program of tango dance was shown to be an effective strategy in alleviating mood disorders. Young or old – or somewhere in between – dancing regularly has also been proven to improve confidence, positivity and even social skills. Line dancing is a favourite pastime among residents of many Palm Lake Resorts across the country and, once our normal activities schedule is back up and running post COVID-19, you can catch our resort line dancing classes on Fridays at 1.30pm. Line dancing instructor and Palm Lake Resort resident Libby Jensen says line dancing allows participants of all levels to join in without feeling separate or standing out. “Learning together while having fun is a great way for neighbours to form friendships,” Libby says. “As we age, issues of balance when changing direction and concentration arise. Line dancing is an excellent and fun way to maintain these skills. “Then there are the social aspects, the camaraderie - and it’s fun! The whole reason that dancing in particular is good is because of the rhythm and music and the endorphin release. It’s taking your mind to a different place and you’re able to cope better with everything.”

PALM LAKE RESORT COVID-19 EDITION 2020

Hi to all of the fabulous residents at Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay. We hope you are keeping yourselves busy during these unusual times. We also hope that all of your family and friends are well. One of the few positives of the current situation is that old Mother Nature is getting a much-needed breather! The recent rains and changing of the seasons are very much welcome after the somewhat hostile summer we’ve just experienced. It’s great to see all of the small wrens and honeyeaters active around the resort. Why, even the wood ducks have made an (un)welcome return to the resort pool!

We miss seeing all of your smiling faces at our weekly meal gatherings and we look forward to things getting back to normal sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we hope you’re enjoying Wayne’s fabulously warming (and free) soups? If you are yet to avail yourself of this offer please don’t hesitate to place an order. Just call the office.

Our new groundsman, Andy, is settling in well and together with Mal, the pair have got the grounds looking great. It’s been no mean feat when you consider the surge in growth, especially weeds, around the resort since the rains commenced. We can report that we’ve been making the most of our time and are having a lot of repairs completed. The blowers have been replaced on the spas and the western sauna is up and running. Extra cleaning is being conducted in the clubhouse and we can assure you that when we re-open for business everything will be even more spick and span.

WHEN IT COMES TO OUR NEWEST LUXURY PALM LAKE RESORT HOMES, THE KITCHEN IS AT THEIR HEART. AND AT THE HEART OF THOSE CHIC KITCHENS IS AN EQUALLY AS SOPHISTICATED APPLIANCE BRAND.

Quality meets style

The Italians are known the world over as a stylish bunch who manufacture quality products. With its origins in the north of Italy, SMEG appliances are stereotypically Italian – and sit perfectly within any modern Palm Lake Resort home’s kitchen.

SMEG was founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni from Guastalla, a town near Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, and is today one of the country's leading home appliance manufacturers. The Bertazzoni family's entrepreneurial history began way back in the 19th Century. Starting out as blacksmiths, the Bertazzonis soon branched out into cooker building.

The very first Bertazzoni kitchens were put on show at the World Expo held in Milan in 1906. By 1948, the SMEG company was formed in an era of economic growth and rapid urbanisation. Radical changes in lifestyles and living patterns, the new concept of the nuclear family, and a huge increase in the number of female professionals were all factors inspiring SMEG to develop ground-breaking technologies and products that would meet the demands of this new society and revolutionise home living.

In the second half of the 1950s, SMEG launched one of the first gas cookers with an automatic switch-on function, an oven safety valve and cooking programmer/timer. In 1963, the laundry and dishwasher range was launched and soon produced a world first in 1970: a 60cm, 14-place setting dishwasher.

SMEG has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Australia. It’s a little-known fact that in 1971, SMEG manufactured the hugely successful range of dishwashers in Australia under the “Dishlex” brand name. In 1986, the SMEG brand was introduced to Australia in its own right.

Pictured left, from top: 1. SMEG espresso coffee machine, various colours, $499. 2. SMEG 1.7l electric kettle in various colours, $199. 3. SMEG stand mixer with wire whisk, aluminium flat beater and dough hook, and 4.8L stainless steel bowl included (optional accessories available), $639. All available at Harvey Norman and other retailers.

SMEG is nowadays run by the third generation of Bertazzoni entrepreneurs, but it still keeps the memory of its beginnings alive in its Italian name: Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (or “SMEG” for short) otherwise known as the “Guastalla Emilia Enamel Works”.

SMEG continues to aim to identify with, and reflect, the defining characteristics of Italian design, such as inventive elegance, originality and product quality.

Palm Lake Resort homes offer an array of premium SMEG appliances as standard, including cooktops (induction or gas, depending on the resort location), 60cm built-in ovens, dishwashers, rangehoods and microwaves with trim kit. Letesha Kirby, spokesperson for SMEG’s

exclusive Australian distributor, says SMEG is the perfect choice for Palm Lake Resort homes for the parallels between the two brands, including premium quality, style and sophistication.

“Retirement homes are some of the last homes that people buy so they deserve to be special and feature premium products,” Letesha says.

SMEG ovens, for example, offer the best cooking results via patented “Thermoseal” technology. Ingeniously, these ovens operate without the constant intake of external air. Using physics, SMEG’s energy-efficient Thermoseal ovens feature precise temperature control, even heat distribution and moisture control in the oven cavity.

The undisputed heart of the home

WITH INTELLIGENT CONTROL AND ENERGY EFFICIENT VENTILATION, YOU HAVE EDMONDS’ ODYSSEY TO THANK FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME COOL AND FRESH IN SUMMER AND CLEAN AND DRY IN WINTER.

Your home’s OdysseyWorking with nature and class-leading hybrid technology, the Edmonds’ Odyssey home ventilation system provides energy-efficient ventilation to keep Palm Lake Resort homes fresh all year ‘round.

The hybrid system – which includes a natural and electrically powered roof ventilator, roof space mounted flow diverter valve and a ceiling grille for living space air removal – gathers data from within and around your home. By monitoring environmental conditions and utilising natural differences, the Odyssey intuitively cools or heats your living space with minimal energy costs.

During the warmer months, this functionality rapidly cools and removes energy from your home throughout the night, enhancing your home’s capacity to absorb more energy before becoming uncomfortably hot to create a more comfortable environment the following day. During cooler months, Odyssey maximises ventilation and greatly reduces moisture levels, therefore reducing condensation and the likelihood of mould growth.

Through the LCD touch screen, you can monitor and adjust the system to suit your preferences. Run the Odyssey through three different modes – Cooling & Warming, Cooling or Warming – or manually adjust the set point temperature at the touch of a button.

With the system’s clever BOOST mode, you can override the intuitive programming to manually ventilate

your space – perfect for exhausting odours or fumes when cooking, for example. On the other hand, activate Standby mode and your Odyssey system will enter a ‘soft off’ state and function solely as a natural roof space ventilator. The Odyssey puts the power to control your environment at your fingertips – and works intuitively in the background so you don’t have to. And it’s a clever inclusion in all Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay homes. We’d be more than happy to talk you through it – just freecall us on 1800 648 868.

Did you know that Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay homes come with $30,000 worth of inclusions, as standard? Clever and luxury additions include European appliances, stone bench tops, ducted air conditioning, the Odyssey home ventilation system and more. Let us tell you all about it on freecall 1800 648 868.

And with ample RV and caravan parking, it’s a perfect lock and leave lifestyle.
