During the month of May, we had a lot of things going on at Gloria Fuertes

School! First we celebrated International Book Day with our students and

learned more about Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare.

Additionally, we celebrated Europe Day on May 9th

. And unfortunately,

this was the last month that we had our wonderful auxiliaries, Jessica and

Deanna. At the end of the Month, we had our last classes with them and

said our goodbyes.

Reflection of the Week Explanation:

The reflection of the week is by a famous English playwright

and poet named William Shakespeare. This quote is especially

appropriate for this month because of the significance of William

Shakespeare with International Book Day. We chose this quote

specifically because it is from our beloved William Shakespeare

who died on the same day as Cervantes.

Some of his most renounced works include Romeo and

Juliet, Hamlet, and many sonnets. The reflection of the week is

from one of Shakespeare earlier works Henry IV.





International Book Day

For international Book Day on April 23rd, the students learnt about a

famous American children´s book called ´´Where the Wild Things Are´´ by

Maurice Sendak. The story is about a young boy named Max. Max

disobeyed his mother and was sent to his room without supper. In his

room and dressed in a wolf suit, Max imagines his bedroom turning into a

Jungle. A boat appears and he sails to the land of the wild things, where

there are huge monsters. Max is not frightened by the monsters and he is

able to tame the wild things, who find Max to be the wildest of them all.

The monsters make him their king and Max leads them to dancing in the

moonlight, hanging from trees, and running wild. Max begins to realize he

misses his mother´s love, so he returns to his bedroom where his supper is

waiting for him.






For international book day, our students are making a small book to write

about one of their favorite authors. We combined their love of origami to

create a small booklet from a single sheet of paper. After creating the

book, the students were able to create their own book cover to attach to

their book. This allowed them to show off their artistic skills to the rest of

the class. Afterwards, they filled out the book with information about

several authors including Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare.

In addition to these two authors, the students were able to pick one

additional author to include in their books. Most of the students chose JK

Rowling, Charles Dickens, or Dr. Seuss. The books were 6-pages in total,

and each author had one page with written information and one page

with a picture of their most famous work.






In some of our classes, our students showed off their creativity by creating

unique covers to put on their handmade books for International Book Day.

Technology in the Classroom

Gloria Fuertes continues to use new technology in the classroom,

especially the application plickers. The application helps familiarize

students to formatted test questions and challenge their knowledge of the

subject. In this picture, the students in class 5B are answering plicker

questions related to International Book Day. The questions include famous

authors and their works, for example Cervantes, William Shakespeare, and

J. K. Rowling the author of Harry Potter.





Europe Day (May 9th)

During the month of May, we had a very special day that we needed to

celebrate- Europe Day. To do so, we planned a presentation in our classes

about some of the basic facts about Europe, and the largest and smallest

countries. Additionally, we made a diagram with some of the basic facts

about 5 or 6 European countries, which included their typical foods,

monuments, capital, and flag. Afterwards, we finished up our lesson with

a puzzle which included all of the countries in Europe that the students

had to recognize and place accordingly on a map.





Europe Day Video Project

This month, to celebrate Europe day, we decided to

highlight all of our multilingual students at Gloria Fuertes and

make a video featuring all of them! In the video, the students

speak English and ask questions to the auxiliaries (Deanna and

Jessica) about different European countries. Jessica and Deanna

then need to guess which country they are talking about. We

have students speaking Italian, German, French, Spanish, and

English. How diverse! If you get a chance, watch the video on the

eTwinning Letters The students wrote their last letter for the academic course to

their pen-pals in Bristol. In the letters, the students wrote about

their summer plans and asked their pen-pals what they will be

doing this summer.





Family Day

In 4th grade, the students made cards for Family Day. The

students colored the cards and cut out hearts to make their card.

They will give their cards to their mother and father.





Muchas Gracias Por Todo

Jessica y Deanna queremos agradecer a todos los profesores, personal de

administración y servicios, alumnos, y padres que han hecho que nuestro

tiempo en España haya sido tan maravilloso. Nosotras nos sentimos muy

afortunadas de tener esta experiencia trabajando en el colegio Gloria

Fuertes, de Jaén. Este colegio siempre tendrá un lugar especial en nuestros

corazones porque han sido muchos recuerdos durante este año. Gracias de

nuevo a todos los que han hecho que este colegio y esta ciudad sea como

nuestra segunda casa. Esperamos haber podido ayudar a todos a mejorar

vuestro inglés y enseñaros muchas cosas culturales sobre nuestro país.

Nosotras os vamos a echar todos mucho de menos. Muchísima suerte para

el futuro y que sepáis que si queréis venir a los Estados Unidos, siempre

tendréis dos amigas allí.
