But how do you know it’stime to give your current win-dows the boot? An annual per-formance check is good practice,say experts.

“Virtually every buildingcomponent in a home needs tobe replaced at some point, andwindows are no exception,” saysMatt Minerd of Simonton Win-dows, a leading vinyl windowand patio door manufacturer.

With that in mind, Minerd isoffering some do-it-yourself tipsto discover how well your cur-rent windows and patio doorsare functioning:

• Examine the inside of yourwindows and patio doors for hotand cold “drafty” spots or areas.This indicates air infiltration,which can lead to reduced ener-gy efficiency.

• Check every window for ad-equate weatherstripping andcaulking around the units,which help eliminate air infiltra-tion and ensure a weather tight,secure seal.

• Look for “burnt out” or fad-ed areas on your furnishings andcarpeting. This could indicatethat harmful, damaging UV rays

are entering your home throughwindows and glass doors. Youmay want to consider more en-ergy efficient options containingLow E, which is a special glasscoating designed to reduce heattransfer.

• If your windows no longeropen or close easily, or if theyneed to be propped open, itcould mean key componentswithin the units are damaged orneed adjustment. It could alsomean the unit needs to be re-placed entirely.

• If you have wood windows,look carefully at the frames forsigns of rotting, warped wood orother problems with the frameitself. These are an indicationthe window has exceeded its life-span.

Should your evaluation turnup one or more problem areas,and it’s time to replace your win-dows, do your homework. Whileprice is important, it shouldn’tbe a sole decision factor, as func-tionality is a critical consider-ation.

Look for low-maintenancematerials that offer energy effi-ciency. For example, vinyl is anexcellent insulator and manypeople choose low-maintenancevinyl frames with a Low E glasscoating and an Argon or Kryp-ton gas fill.
