How to make your yard more environmentally friendlyIt’s easy to make your home

more eco-friendly, and your yardis a great place to start. This sea-son, take steps to limit yourhome’s impact on the local envi-ronment by giving your outdoorspaces an earth-friendly make-over.

Limit Yard WasteWhen the leaves fall from the

trees, you may be dealing withextra bundles of yard waste.Take steps to handle the debrisproperly. Never throw yourleaves and trimmings out withthe garbage. Instead, try com-posting what you can at home orbagging the waste to use asmulch on an as-needed basis.

If your community has spe-cial pick-up days for yard waste, take advantage of those. Addi-tionally, you can leave some clip-pings on the lawn to act as an or-ganic fertilizer and provide thesoil with nutrients.

Be Bird-FriendlyAn eco-friendly yard will

contain plenty of vegetation thatprovides cover and food for suchwildlife as birds. Unfortunately

your home itself can present athreat to their safety. Millions ofwild birds are killed annually fly-ing into windows.

You can protect birds fromthis fate by applying decals toyour windows that contain acomponent that reflects ultravi-olet sunlight. Try placing Win-dowAlert decals every few feeton your glass and applying Win-dowAlert UV liquid in the re-maining areas. This will create avisual barrier that only birds cansee and that helps them avoidstriking glass.

Because the UV reflectivitymay fade over time based on ex-posure, replace the decals everysix to nine months and reapplythe liquid every three months. For more application tips andinformation about bird safety, visit www.WindowAlert.com.

Be FlexibleThe mark of a beautiful, eco-

friendly yard is not necessarily aconventional lawn. Fuel, waterand a lot of time are necessary tomaintain green grass. In at leastsome parts of your property,

consider alternative ground cov-er that has a lower carbon foot-print to maintain. Ornamentalgrasses, shrubs, thyme and othercolorful, low-maintenanceplants that don’t grow very tallcan make for a sustainable alter-

native that’s just as visually ap-pealing as grass.

You may already be takingsteps inside your home to bemore planet-friendly, such as re-cycling, composting food scraps, using LED bulbs and turning off

appliances when they aren’t inuse. Now it’s time to take yourgreener living campaign to yourhome’s outdoor spaces by pro-tecting wildlife and tweaking theway you maintain your lawn.

Upgrading your kitchen?Whether you’re a passionate

chef and a regular host, or youcook simple meals for just yourfamily, you know that a highlyserviceable kitchen can meanthe difference between easymeal prep and a headache. A bigpart of this equation is yourcooking appliances.

If you’re in the market for anew cooktop, oven or range, don’t neglect electric options.Even ardent gas fans will be in-terested to learn how new inno-vations in electric cooking appli-ances are making kitchens morefunctional and versatile.

With that in mind, here aresome things to consider beforeupgrading your kitchen withnew appliances:

• Easy cleaning: Timespent in the kitchen craftingmeals for your loved ones can bea pleasurable experience. Butfew would say the same forcleaning. Opt for appliances thatoffer stress-free cleaning func-

tions. Electric ovens, for exam-ple, tend to be much easier toclean than the gas variety withthe benefit of powerful self-cleaning at the touch of a button. Also look for features such as re-movable glass doors, that canmake cleanup a cinch.

• Even cooking: Roasting achicken tonight? An electric ov-en means less monitoring ofyour dinner, as such appliancesboast more even cooking withthe added advantage of convec-tion fans.

Cooking on the stove-top?Electric heat can be just as ormore precise and consistentwith modern pot-sensing tech-nology, high power elementsand quality cookware.

• Versatility: When shop-ping for appliances, keep fast, ef-ficient cooking top of mind. Forexample, ILVE offers a rangethat features induction cookingtechnology, which uses heat gen-erated from magnetics instead

of coils for the fastest heat trans-fer of any cooking surface.

The ILVE Induction range isequipped with child safety fea-tures, high power cooking ele-ments, and pot-sensor technolo-gy. Additionally, a scope of func-tions can be performed with themulti-function convection oven, included rotisserie accessoryand full-width warming drawer. To learn more, visit www.ilveap-pliances.com.

• Craftmanship: For amore functional, beautifulkitchen, it’s all about finding theintersection of cutting edgetechnology and craftsmanship.Consider checking out a brandsuch as Verona, at www.Vero-naAppliances.com, an Italianmanufacturer of kitchen appli-ances that applies extensivecooking and design expertise tomake ranges, cooktops and ov-ens.

If you’re upgrading yourkitchen don’t make the assump-

tion that a gas cooktop or oven issuperior to electric. Explore newmodels and options that offer

both performance and flexibili-ty.

Tips to help rid your home of autumn allergensMany people think of aller-

gies as a spring problem, butmost sniffle sufferers know thatfall can pose its own issues. Moldand ragweed are common fall al-lergy triggers, as well as dustmites, which are naturally moreprevalent in the home duringthe drier months.

“You can turn your home intoa safe haven from fall allergenswith regular, strategic cleaningand a few preventive measures,”says Robin Wilson, an interiordesign expert and an ambassa-dor with the Asthma and AllergyFoundation of America.

To help make your homemore comfortable this season,Wilson is offering some fallcleaning tips to eliminate aller-gens and maintain a clean andhealthy space:

• Wash your bedding.Mattress and pillow protectorswill help control dust mites. Asan added precaution, wash yourbedding in warm or hot waterevery month and replace pillowsevery three years.

• Check for mold. Moisture

breeds mold, so make sure toscan the inside of dishwashers, under the fridge in the water panand in sink and bath drains.Change water dispensers andicemaker filters on a regular ba-sis.

• Vacuum frequently.Whether you have wall-to-wallcarpeting, tile or hardwood

floors, it’s important to eliminatedust and dirt. Vacuum, mop orsteam clean flooring regularly.

“Use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HE-PA) filter, which captures smallparticles such as allergens, irri-tants and pollutants,” says Wil-son.

For example, the Panasonic

MC-UL429 Vacuum has a HE-PA filter and accessories that al-low you to be more thoroughand get into tight corners. Thisvacuum also comes with an at-tachment that pulls pet hair --another potential allergen -- outof upholstered surfaces. Moreinformation can be found atwww.shop.panasonic.com.

• Wash or freeze stuffedtoys. If your child sleeps withtheir favorite stuffed animals, you should frequently wash orfreeze them in a plastic bag for48 hours. This will lower the lev-el of dust mites which can trig-ger asthma and allergies.

• Use Slipcovers. Slipcov-ers have come a long way in thelast 10 years. Since they can becleaned regularly and more easi-ly than upholstery, consider us-ing them on sofas and other fur-niture.

• Keep ragweed outside. After spending time outside, have your child leave any cloth-ing or sports equipment close tothe entrance of the home toavoid tracking irritants through-out rooms.

“Just because the pollencount isn’t through the roofdoesn’t mean you can’t fall preyto allergies,” says Wilson. “Withregular cleaning, you can man-age the irritants in your homeand make it a more breathableplace.”

What to know about automating your homeThe “connected home” is one

of the biggest areas of technicalinnovation today, with smart ap-pliances, learning thermostats,app-driven lights, and intelli-gent door locks taking centerstage in home improvementstores and magazines. In fact, by2017, an estimated 36 millionhomes throughout North Amer-ica and Europe will be smart.

For some consumers, theconcept of a “smart home” canbe overwhelming. Here are afew things to keep in mind:

The BasicsHome automation gives you

remote and automatic control ofa wide array of devices in yourhome -- it’s ideal for convenienceand control, and some devicescan help with money savings.Home automation can also alertyou to events that you mightwant to know about while you’regone, like leaks, kids arrivinghome or security breaches.

For your furry family mem-ber, your smart home can dis-tribute pre-determined

amounts of food on a scheduleso you don’t have to worry aboutyour pet missing dinner whileyou’re stuck in traffic.

Is it Right for YourHome?

Not everyone is in a place toinstall a full home automationsystem -- literally and financial-ly, as apartment living, renting, low cash flow, expensive installa-tion fees and advanced technicalset-up can all be limitations.

However, with stand-alonehome automation devices andapps, you can make your homesmart without integrating awhole-home automation net-work. For example, smart locks, lighting, irons, coffee makers, se-curity cameras and refrigeratorscan all be controlled by smart-phones without the need for afully integrated system.

First Things FirstIn a recent analyst report

from NextMarket, the smartlock market will grow to $3.6billion worldwide by 2019. Withsecurity and access control lead-

ing smart home product adop-tion, a logical place to start is atyour front door. Consider tryingKwikset Kevo, powered by Un-iKey, which was the first smartlock on the market. It makes itpossible to open the door by sim-ply touching the deadbolt --without removing you smart-phone from your purse or pock-et.

Via the Kevo app, users cangrant and revoke access to thehouse electronically, view a lockhistory and get notified whensomeone locks or unlocks thedoor without connecting to thehome network or a powersource.

Available at many major re-tailers, it installs easily, within afew minutes, with just a Phillipshead screwdriver, making it anexcellent example of how oneproduct can usher your homeinto the era of automation.

From there it’s easy to moveon to take smarter control ofyour home appliances and light-ing, and you can make as many

or as few changes as your budgetand imagination allow.

Smart home solutions aregranting homeowners access toinformation and features thatwere previously unavailable.Bottom line: you don’t have to be

rich or have a fully-connectedhome to enjoy the benefits. Ifyou’re considering getting onboard the trend, do your re-search and find the best technol-ogy and products for you.

RE/MAX Cross Country holds fundraiser for children’s homeA gala was held on Thursday,

July 31, celebrating RE/MAXCross Country’s fundraiserdrive, which included heart-warming presentations fromCumberland’s representatives.Richard Brown, President ofCumberland, introduced thestaff and counselors as well asboard members who were in at-tendance. The Gala received anoverwhelming response frombusinesses and individuals whodonated silent auction items, gift cards and prizes for themany raffles that were held. Aswinning raffles and silent-auc-tion items were announced, guests enjoyed a delicious meal

Since January of this year, agents and staff at RE/MAXCross Country have been hard atwork raising money for Cum-berland Presbyterian Children’sHome.

Cumberland PresbyterianChildren’s Home in Denton waschosen out of many deservingcharities in the area. This facilityprovides emergency shelter aswell as long-term residentialcare for children and adoles-cents. They also provide single-parent family housing and sup-port as well as counseling andother services to heal andstrengthen families throughoutthe community.

supplied by The Village Grilland Shellman’s Fine Wine andSpirits.

Also in attendance was San-ta, who was fresh from his vaca-tion in Hawaii. Santa was the in-spiration for the fundraiser. Ev-eryone at RE/MAX Cross Coun-try was heartbroken with thecancelation of their annual San-ta Party as a result of the massiveice storm that paralyzed NorthTexas last December. “This hasbeen a tradition spanning overthirty years allowing generationsof families an opportunity tobring their children to the officeto meet Santa and receive gifts”says Gary Kuhatschek. Feelingthe need to give back to the com-munity, it was an easy decisionto hold the biggest fundraiser inRE/MAX Cross Country histo-ry.

“We are so proud of ouragents and staff for all the hardwork they put in to make thispossible” says Gary Kuhatschekand Ron Morris co-owners ofRE/MAX Cross Country. “Fromthe beginning our volunteers

jumped in and rose to the chal-lenge to help such a good organi-zation and cause”. Many indivi-duals and businesses were ahuge part in the success of thisfundraiser. First United Bankand Freedom Title of HighlandVillage contributed generousgifts. Thurston Manufacturinghas been working with Cumber-land staff and will manufacturebedroom furniture for each oftheir three cottages in October. The children were also includedin the decision making process.Windham Construction has do-nated their labor and is in pro-cess of painting the interior ofeach cottage on Cumberland’scampus thanks to Sherwin-Wil-

liams’ Flower Mound store thatdonated 75 gallons of paint. Thegenerosity of those who havehelped and donated ensured notonly a memorable event, but willmake an impact on the neededservices for children and fami-lies that Cumberland Presbyte-rian Children’s Home offers.

Five good reasons to replace your old air conditioning unit in fall

Before you turn off your ACsystem for the season, considerhaving it checked out by a certi-fied contractor. If it’s older or hasbeen giving you problems, youmight want to replace it.

“It may not be top of mind, but fall is actually the ideal timeto think about your home’s cool-ing system,” says Frank Land-wehr, VP of Marketing at Emer-son Climate Technologies.

There are five reasons whyconsumers who consider thisimportant home upgrade dur-ing the off-season often havemuch better outcomes, say theexperts at AC & Heating Con-nect.

• Contractor consider-ations: Give yourself plenty of

time to identify the best AC con-tractor for your installation.Contractors in between coolingand heating seasons will bemore available to help solve yourspecific problems.

• New features: Learnabout the latest technology andfeatures available for HVAC sys-tems, as a lot has changed in thepast 20 years. Consider systemswith features ranging from su-perior humidity reduction tonoise reduction to remote con-trol systems and energy-efficientprogrammable thermostats.“Dual fuel” heat pumps that canuse either electricity or naturalgas for heating are another re-cent innovation to consider.

• Zombie heat pump: So-

called “zombie” heat pumps ap-pear to be alive and running, butin reality are not performing op-timally, or at all. If your air con-ditioner doubles as a heat pump, fall is the time to have your sys-tem checked out for the heatingseason. Fall is also a good time tohave a conventional furnacechecked out by a contractor. Ifit’s older like the AC unit, youmight be better off having themboth replaced at once.

• Recalculations: Haveyour contractor run new calcu-lations on your home. Changessince that old AC system was in-stalled can affect your needs. Forexample, if you added insula-tion, upgraded to more efficientwindows, knocked out walls or

added a room, you might need adifferent system size than before-- and the wrong system can beproblematic.

A system that’s too smallwon’t keep up on the hottestdays. A system that’s too largewill cycle too much, causingwide swings in temperature --and won’t necessarily remove allthe humidity from your home.

Further, if you plan to closethe AC vents in seldom-usedrooms, look for a system with atleast two steps of capacity mod-ulation. Closing room vents anddoors effectively makes yourhouse appear smaller to yourHVAC system, which could sig-nificantly damage the system orcause it to fail prematurely.

• Regulations: Know thelatest government regulationsand rebates before you buy. Newregulations going into effectJanuary 1, 2015, might affect theminimum efficiency standard inyour region. Give yourself timeto consider whether you want toreplace your system ahead of thechange.

Replacing HVAC systems infall can be a smart maneuver. Byplanning ahead, you can makesmarter choices for your homeand your comfort.

Check out www.ac-heating-connect.com for free resourcesand to learn more about whattype of system might be best foryour home.
