THE MALPASS BROTHERSFriday, September 23, 2016, 7:00 pmHistoric Earle Theatre, $20 Orchestra, $15 Balcony The Malpass Brothers are as close to real traditional country music artists as you can get these days. Their smooth vocal blend and skillful musicianship pay respect to the legends who have paved their way. The brothers have appeared on iconic stages such as the Ryman Auditorium and Merlefest. Songwriters as well as musicians, the duo’s video “Memory That Bad” hit CMT Pure Country’s Top Ten. Taylor and Chris pay tribute to music legends Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, The Louvin Brothers, Faron Young, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and many more during their performances. With their funny, off-the-cuff quips, these two 20-somethings will have the audience laughing and singing along to those beloved songs we all remember as real country music. And for you Mayberry fans, Christopher Malpass is, in his own words, “the world’s biggest fan of Andy Griffith.” He watches the show every night and can quote lines from the episodes.

There has been no band to meticulously meld classical, hip-hop, rock and pop music into a single genre-busting act - until now. After winning Showtime at the Apollo, they have toured with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, opened for the Wu-Tang Clan, scored an episode of CSI: New York and even performed for President Obama at his 2nd inauguration. “We want to really be something that young musicians aspire to,” says Kev. “For us, the violin is the vehicle for a bigger message, which is not to be afraid to be different.” CABINET (Pending)Saturday, June 18, 2016, 7:30 pm, $15 Orchestra, $10 BalconyCabinet, formed in 2006, is a band with roots firmly planted in the Appalachian tradition. Describing themselves as “bluegrass but not in the traditional sense,” their music brings to mind soul, simplicity and serious musicianship. THE MALPASS BROTHERSFriday, September 23, 2016, 7:00 pm, $20 orchestra, $15 balconyThe Malpass Brothers are as close to real traditional country music artists as you can get. Taylor and Chris pay tribute to music legends Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, The Louvin Brothers, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and many more during their performances. With their funny, off-the-cuff quips, these two 20 somethings will have the audience laughing and singing along to those beloved songs we all remember as real country music. And for you Mayberry fans, Christopher Malpass is, in his own words, “the world’s biggest fan of Andy Griffith.” He watches the show every night and can quote lines from the episodes.

DRIVING MISS DAISYPerformed by the Surry Arts PlayersSun., April 23, 2016, 7:30 pm • Sunday, April 24, 2016, 3 pm • Monday, April 25, 2016, 7:30 pmAndy Griffith Playhouse, $15*The place is the Deep South, the time 1948, just prior to the civil rights movement. Having recently demolished another car, Daisy Werthan, a rich, sharp-tongued Jewish widow of seventy-two, is informed by her son, Boolie, that henceforth she must rely on the services of a chauffeur. The person he hires for the job is a thoughtful, unemployed black man, Hoke, whom Miss Daisy immediately regards with disdain and who, in turn, is not impressed with his employer’s patronizing tone and, he believes, her latent prejudice. But, in a series of absorbing scenes spanning twenty-five years, the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer to, and more dependent on, each other, until eventually they become almost a couple. Slowly and steadily the dignified, good-natured Hoke breaks down the stern defenses of the ornery old lady, as she teaches him to read and write and, in a gesture of good will and shared concern, invites him to join her at a banquet in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. As the play ends Hoke has a final visit with Miss Daisy, now ninety-seven and confined to a nursing home, and while it is evident that a vestige of her fierce independence and sense of position still remain, it is also movingly clear that they have both come to realize they have more in common than they ever believed possible—and that times and circumstances would ever allow them to publicly admit.

INTO THE WOODS, JR.Friday, June 17, 2016, 4 pm • Saturday, June 18, 2016, 4 pm • Sunday, June 19, 2016, 4 pmAndy Griffith Playhouse, $11* Adults, $7* Ages 12 and under All of your favorite characters—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch—meet and interact in this whimsical original story. The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes that his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever. The Brothers Grimm hit the stage with an epic fairytale about wishes, family and the choices we make.

BIG RIVERSaturday, July 30, 2016, 7:30 pm • Sunday, July 31, 2016, 3 pm • Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, 7:30 pmAndy Griffith Playhouse, $15*Twain’s timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel-the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck’s partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck’s drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; and the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family. Propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.

NEW EXHIBITSThe exhibit design project is under the direction of architect Mark Meagher

and the plans were recently sent to local and state building contractors. The project is scheduled to begin in early 2016. The new exhibit spaces are much needed to preserve the one-of-a-kind items in the collection. There will be significant audio/visual components as well, enabling the sharing of more information than can be formally displayed. Rotating exhibits are also part of the plans.

A group of fans recently purchased a telephone that was an original prop from “The Andy Griffith Show.” This will be incorporated in a new exhibit but is on display during Mayberry Days in one of the existing cases. And Cindi Griffith has generously donated yet another iconic personal item from Andy Griffith’s career for the museum. We continue to be grateful to Cindi for her ongoing support of the Andy Griffith Museum and the Surry Arts Council. We look forward to unveiling this latest donation in 2016.

GUIDED TOURS OF THE ANDY GRIFFITH PLAYHOUSE and MUSEUM GARDENS AND GROUNDS

Groups are now enjoying Andy Griffith Playhouse Backstage Tours with Heather Elliott. We continue to add photos and posters to the walls of the backstage area. Groups also have the opportunity to enjoy tours of the facility grounds with Master Gardener Ginny Adams. The gardens were designed with native North Carolina plants for continuous year round blooms and interest. They were designed by landscape architect Chip Callaway who also did the design for Cindi and Andy Griffith’s Manteo home. Chip is from Mount Airy and resides in Greensboro, NC, where he operates Chip Callaway and Associates and specializes in residential, hospitality and historic garden design.

Eng and Chang were Born in the village of Samutsongkram, Siam (now Thailand) on May 11, 1811. Eng and Chang Bunker were connected at the chest by a cartilaginous band of flesh. The twins shared relatively normal boyhoods in Siam, running and playing with other children and helping to support their family by gathering and selling duck eggs in their village. On April 1, 1829, the twins left Siam and began a career traveling with two agents, Robert Hunter, a British merchant, and Abel Coffin, an American sea captain. Eng and Chang earned money by making appearances throughout the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. In their far-flung travels, Eng and Chang became such popular celebrities during the 1830s that their promotion as “Siamese Twins” were terms that became synonymous with connected or conjoined twins. In 1832, they fulfilled their contracts and declared their independence from their agents.By the late 1830s, Eng and Chang tired of all their traveling and opted to settle in North Carolina. There, the brothers married sisters, Adelaide and Sarah Yates. The sisters were the daughters of Nancy and David Yates, Quakers from Wilkes County. The couples were married on April 13, 1843 and produced 22 children between the two families. They moved to White Plains, just west of Mount Airy, in 1845. They were successful farmers and good citizens. They split their time between the two families with a rigidly followed system of three days in one house followed by three days in the other with each being the master in his home. They observed this without exception until they died on January 17, 1874, at the age of 62.

DID YOU KNOW…• The Siamese Twins resided with their families only a few miles from the Andy Griffith Playhouse! • They are buried at White Plains Baptist Church. On the way to the gravesite, you will cross the Eng and Chang Bunker Bridge. That bridge crosses Stewart’s Creek – the body of water that divided their land. • They raised their children here and hundreds of descendants reside in the area. There is an annual Bunker Reunion on the last weekend in July each year. • The Surry Arts Council hosts guest lecturers each year during the Bunker Reunion. • The exhibit on the lower level of the Andy Griffith Playhouse features original documents along with photos of the Twins and their families. The wills of Eng Bunker and Chang Bunker are displayed along with numerous additional items on loan from descendants. A documentary plays continuously. • That in 1839, Eng and Chang Bunker were the first Asians to become citizens of this country. They took the name Bunker from their close friends Fred and William Bunker who lived in New York City. They were such close friends that at one time, Chang had bequeathed all his estate to their sister, Catharine Bunker.• That Eng and Chang were excellent fishermen, expert in the use of firearms, excellent performers on the flute, excellent with tools and construction, and above average in intellect.• That Eng and Chang were Whigs.• That Eng and Chang had sons who fought in the Confederate army. Eng and Chang opened their homes to weary and hungry Confederate soldiers.• That Eng and Chang Bunker were the first Buddhists to enter this country.• That Eng and Chang Bunker brought the first Siamese Buddhist text into this country.• That Eng and Chang Bunker remain the only conjoined twins to have children.• That Chang died first on January 17, 1874 and Eng died several hours later.• That Sarah died on April 29, 1892 and she is buried in a cemetery with slaves and some of her children, on Bunker property near the White Plains Baptist Church.• That Adelaide died at the age of 94 on May 21, 1917 and is buried beside Chang.• That their bodies were autopsied at the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.• That their last living child, Robert E. Bunker (named after Robert E. Lee), died on January 25, 1951

First and Lasting Thoughts about Mayberry Daysby Jim ClarkGomer’s Bucket List

This 25th Anniversary year of Mayberry Days moves me to figuratively put a bucket on my head like Gomer and “take a think under there.” Even as this wonderful festival has evolved and grown through the years, I’m struck by how many of my thoughts and feelings have remained similar to what they were all those many years ago. I began contributing this annual column for The Mayberry Confidential in 1995. In my first column and in many others that have followed, I’ve written about how Mayberry Days is a homecoming. It still feels that way to so many of us. Even first-timers. When we’re in Mount Airy, when we’re at Mayberry Days, we’re home. We may not be precisely in Mayberry when we’re here, but Mayberry just seems somehow more fully in us and around us when we’re in Mount Airy, especially during Mayberry Days. To understand why we feel this way, just stroll down the northern part of Main Street and sniff the aroma of sammich-bound pork chops as they fry on the griddle at the Snappy Lunch, which has been serving up Mayberry-style food and friendship for 92 years. Or drop by Floyd’s City Barber Shop next door and visit with Russell Hiatt, who’s also in his 92nd year of bringing joy to the world. Russell recently retired his clippers, but he still comes to the shop most days to cut up with old friends and to meet new ones. If you’re looking for a true example of the Mayberry spirit, you need look no further than Russell. The late Emmett Forrest’s legacy of friendship and devotion to all things Andy Griffith lives on triumphantly with his memorabilia collection, the heart of the Andy Griffith Museum, which shares its grounds with the Andy Griffith Playhouse, itself a hub not only for Mayberry Days but also for local arts and culture throughout the year. One afternoon a month during several months each year, Mayberry scholar Neal Brower gives a lecture about an “Andy Griffith Show” episode in the museum’s basement theater. And Mount Airy resident Betty Lynn, Mayberry’s treasured Thelma Lou, greets fans at the museum the third Friday afternoon of most months. Also steadfast through the years are places like the Mayberry Motor Inn, a beacon of hospitality on the Andy Griffith Parkway. Alma Venable (fondly known as Aunt Bee to many) welcomes all guests as friends to the charming motel that she has operated for decades—formerly along with beloved late husband L.P. I’ve stayed in the same corner room there every Mayberry Days for decades. All of this and much more are the fabric of normal daily life in Mount Airy. But then, when Mayberry Days arrives every September, Mount Airy seems to burst at the seams with Mayberryness. There are so many enticing things going on at the same time during the festival that you can’t even begin to do them all. The first Mayberry Days (actually, just Mayberry Day in its inaugural year) starred Doug Dillard. He was the sole representative of the cast of “The Andy Griffith Show” that year. Doug performed at the next 21 Mayberry Days until his passing in 2012. Over the years, dozens of other Mayberry stars have participated in the festival. Most years, including this year, find a dozen or more members of the cast and crew and their families in attendance as official guests. New faces from the cast this year are Barbara Eden (her first-ever Mayberry event), Clint Howard (his first Mayberry event since 1997), and Ronnie Dapo (his first ever Mayberry event). They join a wonderful lineup of festival favorites. As often as not in recent years, Mayberry Days has also become a time to reflect on the chairs vacant since the previous year’s festival. Among those passing this year was James Best, who brought bottomless good cheer and giggles wherever he went. Wife Dorothy’s tribute presentation about him during this Mayberry Days is sure to be a festival highlight. We’ve also had several losses among our fan community again this year. They are folks who were friends to everyone who knew them at Mayberry Days and beyond. All were Mayberry family to many of us and were actual family to several of us. We embrace the happy memories of times with them, just as we savor the moments and cherish all of our friends at this year’s Mayberry Days. Something that has been true since the start is that Mayberry Days is a celebration. It’s a celebration of “The Andy Griffith Show.” It’s also a celebration of the people who were a part of making this most beloved TV show. And it’s a celebration of the joyful spirit that Mayberry amplifies within each of us. My Mayberry Days game plan after 25 years remains the same: Explore the interesting sights and the good eats all around town, take in as many performances and other official activities as I can, visit with the cast and crew members and fellow fans, and, simply, celebrate Mayberry. In other words, get ready to enjoy all the excitement and fun, because once again…Live from Mount Airy…it’s Mayberry Days!

Remember Me With Laughter by James Best

When the autumn leaves are falling. To cover the earth with gold.So little time is left for the old.

Just to see one more SpringWould be a blessing.Or to live for just one more fallOr to live for just man’s asking. That’s all this old man’s asking.Just a few more months. That’s all.

A few more moments with loved ones.To say how much I cared.

And talk of the fun and laughterThat we have always shared.

We’ll speak of all the loving times. As we look back in the past. But now must face the painful truthThat good times never last For soon now I must leave youBut my memory will not die.For I shall always be, with youIf within your heart you’ll try To just remember me with laughter,That way you’ll never cry.
