Happy New Year! Starting off with saying thank you to Fuddruckers restaurant for their generous “Food for Thought” reading program and also, thank you to those who participated, hope you enjoyed your meal. If you are a participant of the Chicago Bears “Tackle Reading Challenge”, the deadline for the “overtime” portion will be February 25, 2010. Don’t forget, all you need to do is read 4 books and write and submit a book report or a short essay on what you’ve read. With that being said, here are children programs to help kick off the New Year.

PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

TEEN AFTER HOURS BOOK CLUB (Ages 13-19) 1st & 3rd Monday of the month, 6-7 pm Read the book or plan to. Come once or every time. Free dessert and lemonade! SENIOR COMPUTER CLASS (Ages 56 & older) Every Tuesday of the month, 10:30-12:30 am February classes are now forming with limited space. The following will be taught in four sessions:

How to use the mouse and keyboard. Basic windows desktop. How to set up an email account. How to use email and the internet.

ADULT COMPUTER CLASS (Ages 18-55) Classes are now forming with limited space. Please call the library for more information.

BEGINNER’S CHECKERS (Ages 7-13) Every Tuesday of the month, 4-6 pm Space is limited to 8 people. There will be 6 classes and the last class will compete in a tournament “IT’S SO EASY!” SPANISH FOR BEGINNER’S Tuesdays, Feb 16th & 23rd, Mar 2nd, 9th, & 16th , 6-7:30 pm This is a repeat of the popular class that started in October of last year. Seating is limited so please register as soon as possible! WII WEDNESDAY Youth - Every Wednesday of the month, 6-7 pm Space is limited on a first come first serve basis. There will be a time limit of 20 minutes per party/group. Senior Fitness – Every Wednesday of the month, 10-12 am Choices are bowling, tennis or golf. Light refreshments will be served.

BEGINNER’S CHESS (Ages 14 & older) Every Thursday of the month, 6-7 pm Space is limited to 12 people. There will be 6 classes and the last class will compete in a tournament. MOVIE NIGHT The 3rd Thursday of the month, 6pm (In March it will be held on the 4th Thursday) Remember you can bring your own snacks. The movies featured will be:

JOB READINESS SKILLS Thursday, January 14th, 6:30 pm Are you ready to work? Let Veronica Thorpe give you the professional development skills you need to enter the work force. Her focus will be on:

TIPS ON WRITING A BETTER RESUME Tuesday, January 20th, 6:30-8 pm Rick Hansen – Senior Writer and Coach for A Better Resume Service/Career Pro, will be at the library to provide guidance and answer questions on writing a professional resume that will stand out from the crowd. Bring a pen and paper to take lots of notes. In addition bring your resume and cover letter for a free evaluation after the workshop! NATIONAL PIE DAY! Saturday, January 23rd

When you visit the library and check out a book, you will receive a free slice of pie. One slice of pie per patron. THE LOST ART OF SHOE SHINE Saturday, February 20th, 11 am-2 pm Learn the Seven Easy Steps from 40 Year Master, Cornelius Majied, “Mr. Shine”. The Skill and Art of Shoe Shone is on DVD and can be checked out at the circulation desk. OLADIJI’S DAYCARE PRESENTS: NATIVE AFRICAN DANCE, STORIES, SONGS, APPAREL & FOOD Thursday, February 25th, 6:30 pm Last year was standing room only; make plans to join us this year! CELEBRATING WOMEN’S MONTH WITH STORYTELLER VELMA GLADNEY Thursday, March 18th, 6:30 pm Velma Gladney is an early childhood educator with a Master’s of Science degree in Education. She uses her storytelling gifts to help young people develop strong imaginations, self-esteem, character and an appreciation for the written word.

ADOPT-A-PET Starting March 1st, the library will have one animal on display monthly, for patrons that have not observed the likes of before. Up close and personal, patrons are welcome to come in and observe, touch and gently handle the animals. At the end of each month, essays will be written on the featured animals. After they are collected and reviewed, the essay winner will be awarded the pet to share their home and family with! Fore more details, please inquire at the reference desk.

Check the Bookmobile for the craft or story of the week! The activity will be held at the 3:00 pm Link Option stop!

The Bookmobile staff would like to thank you for making the Bookmobile the success it is today. With your support we have made 128 stops, and serviced 510 patrons. Along the way we have processed 50 new library cards, renewed 37 library cards, circulated 1,530 items, and fulfilled countless Inter Library Loans as of November 2009. We have also added material to our Bookmobile collection from requests we have received from patrons. So remember if there is something you would like to

see on the Bookmobile shelves, fill out a request sheet and we will get it for you. We now have a new route beginning January 5th, so familiarize yourself with it, and come out to one of our convenient stops with your library card. With the

weather getting colder our doors will be closed, however anytime you see the Bookmobile parked, we are ready to serve the community. We look forward to seeing you!
