LOUIS AND LEAH YAFFEE BNEI AKIVA PROGRAM:
Shabbat There will be no classes this Shabbat. We look forward to seeing you next week.
Ohad Ilan Tessler, a 7th grader at Beren Academy, will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat, Parashat Tzav, March 26, 2016. Ohad's parents, Tali and Avi Tessler, along with his siblings, Sapir, Ofir and Mia, are looking forward to sharing this simcha with their friends and family, who will be arriving from Israel, DC, New Mexico and New Jersey. Ohad is the grandson of Arik and Ilana (Z"L) Sharon of Houston and Yaakov and Miriam Tessler of Israel.
Ohad enjoys playing basketball and working on computers. He recently began learning to play the guitar, after having learned piano for the last 4 years. As a Mitzvah project, Ohad used his passion for computers and technology to help improve the website of Avukat Or, an organization in Israel that serves as a day center for blind, mentally challenged young adults. Ohad plans to donate a portion of his gifts to this organization, which strives at helping improve the quality of these students by providing them with enrichment activities.

Topic: “The Boychiks of Baseball—Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax”
Kick off the new baseball season with a
special class on Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, Jewish baseball stars who made national news when they declined to play on the High Holidays in the 1930s and 1960s. We’ll examine their spectacular careers, the Jewish choices they made (and did not make), and the anti-Semitic treatment they encountered. We’ll also consider their enduring symbolic value to the American Jewish community, then and now.
Get Ready For Pesach A three part series on the Haggadah and laws of Pesach

UOS is proud to be one of the community participants in the Houston Jewish Community Foundation’s Create a Legacy Program. As a participant we are planning for the future of our congregation by asking our members to make plans for a legacy gift to UOS. There are several ways this can be accomplished, but we first ask for a Letter of Intent, indicating your support. The form is available in the office. Brochures are available in the foy-er, and the members of this committee are anxious to speak with you; they are Nada Chandler (713-256-1030), Joe Blog (713-530-5337) and Basil Joffe (713-302-6691). Feel free to contact them for more information. Our goal is to have a very large percentage of our members partic-ipate and we look forward receiving the completed Letter of Intents send to the office. Please do not assume that someone else will help us reach this goal – it is up to you! Please note that you may designate one of the oth-er participating organizations, as well as designating UOS.
