Introduction

Only a G-Class can be better than a G-Class. This is the credo followed by the developers for the Mercedes-Benz G 550 4x4². The basic recipe for this overcomer of everything is simple: take the superior all-wheel-drive powertrain including portal axles from the G 63 AMG 6x6 – take away one axle – and blend it all with a newly-developed variable chassis and the series-production G-Class body. With portal axles, 3 center-locking differentials, a biturbo 4.0L V8 engine, 22” 325/55 wheels, carbon-fibre body parts, and a seductive designo interior, it is clear that the G 550 4x4² is the off-road machine of enthusiasts’ dreams.

On the front and rear of the G 550 4x42, portal axles are found. This technology use gears in the hubs to allow the entire axle to sit higher than the wheel centers for increased ground clearance. Improvements over the MY17 G 550 include:

• Increased ground clearance by 203 mm

• Increased wading depth by 400 mm

• Increased maximum approach angle by 21.6°

• Increased front and rear track width by 247 mm and 264 mm
