MBHS Football Team Discovery Channel Filming: The MBHS Football team went to clean up the rock as a part of an event put on by EcoSlo.                                       Apparently there were King Tides last week, which brought in a lot of trash and debris. The                                 football players went to help with the clean up and found over 20 pounds of trash. This was                                   also being filmed for a TV Special that will be aired on the Discovery Channel on April 22nd to                                     promote Earth Day. Zac Efron appeared as a special guest considering he is from the area                               growing up in Arroyo Grande. Way to go Pirates!

Ms. Heidt’s Environmental Science News: In Mrs. Heidts Environmental science class, students took a field trip to the embarcadero to                             get a closer look at Morro Bay's fishing practices. Students experienced a close look at how                               oysters are farmed when visiting the Morro Bay Oyster Companies facilities as well as first                             glance at fresh fish and dungeness crab caught that day from our local fishing companies.

Next Week’s Mission Monday:  Good morning, Pirates, and welcome back to Mission Tuesday! Students and staff, your                         mission this week is to be like an Olympian and go for the academic gold or silver medal!                                   After every semester, your grades are calculated into points. An A=4 pts, a B=3 pts, a C=2 pts,                                   a D=1 pt. with 23 pts earning a gold metal and 21 pts. earning a silver medal. These medals                                     are handed out at an evening awards night and then worn at graduation. Now to earn a                                 medal, you MUST be turning in your assignments, studying for tests, and making school a                             priority- which is your mission for the week and every week!    Go Pirates!

MBHS Pirates’ Friday Update

MindfulSLO Volume 29: Readiness and Trusting Our Teens to Find Their Way Frank Bruni’s assertion that Where You Go is Not Who You Will Be resonates on so many levels. No matter what part of the journey our kids are on, each step in their development gives them little glimpses into who they are and what impact they want to make on the world. We have focused so much on career pathways, but all of our work and the notable research of many, assert before we focus on career pathways, we have to do our best to address the foundations of who our students are. The building blocks to life success is finding our foundation of who we are and what we’re about, and what contributions we have for the world. The journey isn’t a

straight line, and it is quite unpredictable. We can all attest to that. The common thread through it all is connection; connection with others, with ourselves, and discovering at each step new clues to help guide us.   Ultimately, we want to encourage our children to succeed and be content, but not at the expense of their emotional health. This means thinking about how we talk about this process and the weight or value we put on it. It includes encouraging and helping them to discover their strengths and set their own goals. It requires making time and listening to what they want for their lives as well as the paths they want to take to get there. What they learn on their journey will help them be college and career ready. Most importantly, what they learn is what will best prepare them to be life ready.  Unfortunately, we send our kids mixed messages when we continue to make comparisons and practice judgement. Many (students and parents) continue to see acceptance and rejection letters as external validation of intelligence, character, worth, and potential. We know, and there is now plenty of research to show, that what’s in the envelope does not seal one’s fate for “where you go is not who you will be.” In fact, now more than ever, there is a lot of chance and luck in the admissions process. Very successful people (as profiled in Bruni’s book) are successful despite the less conventional paths they’ve chosen and taken.  Like many of you, we’ve heard stories of kids getting into the schools of their dreams only to discover that it wasn’t as good for them, of kids who went on to college, but had to take a year off along the way for health reasons, and of kids who didn’t feel it was their time to go, so either took a GAP year or worked and went to community college and are now thriving and believe it was the best decision they ever made. Daring to take a different path is commendable. Making time to learn about yourself, your goals, passions, and interests is something to celebrate. We are each worth investing in. Given that for many these realizations come late in the process, we wish such valuable exploratory opportunities could be a part of every high school students’ journey.  Given that there is a big difference between what it takes to get into college and what it takes to stay in college to earn a degree, we need to devote more time and thought toward helping our kids gain the skills (and develop the mindset) needed to make it to “graduation” and

MBHS Pirates’ Friday Update through whatever their next steps may be. As parents, we model and teach how to embrace challenges and successes. So, it’s critical to be mindful of how we talk about others’ chosen paths, accomplishments, and decision-making processes and talk about our own. The best thing we can do is to consider, connect, question, and be there with and for our kids.

Washington Post, 2018) ● Is College Necessary? (Psychology Today, 2018). Includes “5 (actually 6) Ways to Help

Teens Find Their Passion” so they can become who they want to be. And, they may not want to go to college yet.

school or college or kids in between, this post has resources and insights for you. ● How to Help a Teenager Be College-Ready (New York Times, 2018) ● How to Get the Most Out of College (Opinion, The New York Times, 2018)  ● Helicopter parents don’t stay at home when the kids go to college — they keep

hovering (The Washington Post, 2018). YIKES! As a former college professor, I can tell you this is not good or healthy for anyone.

The truth is there are many hidden or unknown variables that go into the college admissions process and only so many that we can control. Rather than engaging in comparison, competition, and judgement, we can graciously, humbly, and intentionally think about congratulating others for the steps taken and opportunities they have been offered and encourage them to gratefully make the best of their experiences. Others’ successes do not diminish our own.  Perfectly imperfect,

MBHS Pirates’ Friday Update

Just 1 Job Fair: Our “Just 1” job fair will be held on March 24th, from 9 AM - 11 AM at Morro Bay High School. San Luis Coastal Unified School District is recruiting local businesses and organizations to                         partner with education, enabling our students an in-depth insight into career options and                         successful career pathways. These students are studying and gaining experience in many                       industry sectors, so whether you need a prep cook, a construction helper, a computer                           technician, a photographer, an auto mechanic or a welder, you can find a match at “Just 1.”   We invite you to interact with the employees of tomorrow with the possibility that your                             business could find a young employee or mentee. You could hire for current needs or plan for                                 summer. While we ask organizations and businesses to consider offering an opportunity to                         “Just 1” students, such as a job shadow, an internship or a paid position, you are free to select                                     as many students as staffing needs require.  If you sign up for the event there is no obligation to you except the interview process. We will                                     provide parking and set up a table for you. Students will come to interview with you, bringing                                 resumes and ready to practice soft skills. Be prepared to interview three groups of up to five                                 students at the job fair. During “free time,” please answer student questions, discuss your                           business, and let them know what you look for in employees.   This is an excellent opportunity for students to practice their interview skills, for employers to                             search for their next new hire, and for long-term employment relationships to begin! A “Just 1”                               match just may lead to a team member you’ll want to keep.  Students will sign up through their English class, CTE capstone or Career Center from March                             16-20.  Businesses complete this form to sign up and learn ways in which your business can help students become career ready.

March 12, 2020 is the business deadline for signing up.

Student sign up is March 16-20

MBHS Pirates’ Friday Update

Principal’s Message: Food For Thought . .   Happy Friday Pirates!  Decisions, decisions, decisions. We are asked to make decisions all day, everyday. But what                           do we base our decisions on? What do we hope for our children when they make decisions? I                                   wanted to share an article with all of you that discusses how we can help support our children                                   in making decisions, and how we can model good decision making behaviors.    https://www.creativitypost.com/education/empowering_kids_to_make_decisions-1  Best,    Dr. Kyle Pruitt, Principal Morro Bay High School
