Pathankot-Joginder Nagar Train

Page 3: Mc Loedgunj

Kangra Toy Train unlike the Shimla-KaIka train, where the passengers spend most of the time going through tunnels, the Kangra toy train- linking Pathankot and Joginder Nagar gently meanders through a maze of hills and valleys, offering the travellers enchantingly scenic views. The work on this line started in 1926. Three years later this, 163 km long route was opened to traffic.

Joyous Journey

The entire route commands glorious views of nature and unveils myriad facets of history, art and culture. The grand spectacle of Kangra Valley begins unfolding after the train crosses Nurpur. Hillocks rise on both sides and as the train moves over the innumerable bridges built across meandering streams, the Dhauladhar begin to gain in prominence. Emerging through Daulatpur tunnel and past the ruins of the old Kangra fort, one is surprised by the change in the landscape.

The Dhauladhar rise up 13,000 ft from the valley floor. The wide Kangra Valley, with its well-watered terraces, is simply superb. As the train inches on, the passengers adore the open countryside and the shining white peaks. An unmistakable pine scent fills the air and the track is suddenly fringed on both sides by the tea gardens of the Palampur region.

The stretch between Baijnath (renowned for its ancient Shiva temple) and Joginder Nagar is the steepest. Here the train moves at a snail's pace till it reaches the highest point on the track at Ahju. Not far from here are the popular para-gliding and hang-gliding sites of Bir and Billing. As the train approaches Joginder Nagar, the white mountains, gradually begin fading away.

Never-before Holiday

A trip on the Kangra toy train is a thrilling experience. It is an unmatched way to savour the beauty of the Kangra Valley.

1. Re: Kangra Queen Toy Train Information 29 September 2011, 10:20

Kangra valley toy train booking can be done at the station itself.... This is more like a passanger train rather than tourist train with general compartments. Though the journey is definitely scenic.

I suggest you should do Kangra - palampur trip, rather than Kangra - pathankot. On kangra - palampur stretch, train runs close to the Dhauladhar range amidst tea gardens & offer great vistas of snow clad mountains from reletavely close distance. I think it takes close to 3 hrs for this journey.

kangra pathankot is longer stretch & takes about 5 hours.....

McLeod Ganj is the upper part of Dharamsala.  For more information, click here.

In McLeod Ganj, you are amidst the towering beauty of the Dhauladhars, the spectacular mountain range one sees from one corner of McLeod Ganj to the other. What one enjoys the most about this tiny quaint place is the multiple types of food you can get and all within a 200 to 250mt radius.

To start with the Tibetan delights....things to try are the momos, thupa and the fried noodles, all delicious and easy to digest. A small little eatery called Norling, opposite the carpet weaving centre, is good for Tibetan food, a little tight for space but the momos are good.  Hotel Tibet has it all, on the Bhagsu road it has wonderful Tibetan and Chinese food and a good bar and the surroundings are pleasant.

Another good, in fact excellent place for western kind of food is The Chocolate Log down Jogiwara road, past the post office. This place is an old favourite among the western tourists; it's about 18 yrs old and it has only got better with the years. One can sample a variety of cakes - the walnut and date being the best - and an assortment of pies and puddings. It also has another extension called Wine Oaks, a beautifully done wine shop, something you won't expect and out of the ordinary in McLeod Ganj. The wines are excellent especially the ginger and the red grape wine.

If one carries on down Jogiwara road you will find Japanese and Korean food, and here the tempura is very good. If you want to enjoy good Indian and Chinese food stop at Hotel Dhauladhar in Dharamsala town. The view is gorgeous and they have a sit out with a breathtaking view of Pong Dam. In McLeod Ganj you can go from street food to fancy hotels but one thing is for sure: the charm and magic of this small town tucked away in the Himalayas is something one must experience at least once and if possible a lot more times in their lifetime

Oct 26, 2009 McLeodganj Experience: I was looking for a getaway with my friends and couldn't think of a destination, my friend suggested Mcleodganj. I had been there once before and just the reminder of good times helped me decide. So Mcleodganj it was. We stayed in a little hotel called Hotel Green in quite Mcleod Ganj. Here the food is excellent, the atmosphere is relaxed and the locals are friendly, which truthfully, is probably because the locals are all Tibetan.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The many local restaurants, featuring delicious Tibetan specialties, are cheap and clean. In the evenings, two video parlors show the latest releases or films on Tibetan history and culture, and the bustling 'Western' restaurant above the bus station

Page 8: Mc Loedgunj

serves cold beer, which tastes great after a long day of hiking in the mountains--or meditation. Tsuglag Khang, The Dalai Lamas temple complex, is the life-blood of the village. Located a short walk away from the bus station at the center of town, the complex houses the Namgyal Monastery (which trains monks for rituals associated with the temple), the main temple and a smaller shrine that houses a huge gilded statue of the Buddha, along with two smaller, but no less impressive statues of Chenresig and Guru Rinpoche. In addition, the Dalai Lamas residence and administrative offices are in the complex.

Activities & things to do: There are some very cool things to do in the area. Besides classes in cooking, massage and meditation, the Tibetan government in exile has all its offices here, and with a fair walk through the forest you can get to His Holiness' Department of Medicine and Astrology. Here, with a down payment of INR 2400 and an 11 month wait, you can get a detailed horoscope. You can also visit the new temple, though it's fairly disappointing. Looks more like one of the concrete high schools back home built in the 50s. But Richard Gere's got his photo in the temple cafe! Pierce Brosnan has his in the main pub in Mcleod Ganj. So I guess we were in good company as we whiled away our time between the two. There is so much to do and see, but just strolling the streets of this walkable village is an experience itself. Industrious Tibetan vendors set up their stalls along the narrow roads each morning, selling everything from antiques and apples to prayer beads and handmade paper books created by children at the Tibetan Childrens Village. Tibetan women in their colorful aprons walk through the chorten in the center of town, turning the prayer wheels. People stop each other on the road and conversations flow easily. Its not uncommon to be invited home for tea or supper by a Tibetan friend you just met.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Nearest airport is Gaggal which is about 30 km away from Mcleodganj. From Kulu and Delhi, flights services are available to Gaggal thrice a week. Taxis are available and costs about Rs 1000 from Mcleodganj. Regular deluxe bus services are available from Delhi to Mcleodganj which is about 530 km away from Delhi and fare is about Rs 2000. State bus services connect Mcleodganj with neighboring cities. Kangra and Nagrota are the nearest meter gauge railway stations to Mcleodganj. Pathankot is the nearest broad gauge station, which is connected to all major cities in India by train. It can get cold up here, especially at night. However, if you arrive in high season, and come from a colder clime, then it should not bother you. It does rain without warning here, and it rains throught the year. Carry a torch/candles just in case the lights go out or buy one from the market. also, if you're prone to attracting mosquitoes carry some repellent.Make sure you have a camera! There's too much beauty to not take home with you.

Vanessa's answer about things to do in

Tashi Delek! (Hello in Tibetan) An adventure trip to the picturesque "Little Lhasa", as McLeod Ganj is nicknamed, sounds terribly exciting!

Intirgued by its unusual name, I did some digging and here's what I discovered. The McLeod part refers to Sir Donald Friell McLeod, the British Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, while the Ganj bit means "neighbourhood" in Hindi.

Page 25: Mc Loedgunj

Here's more on the tranquil abode of the Lama nestled in the folds of the mighty Dhauladhars.

McLeodGanj is a patchworked cultural fabric. Home to people from various cultures, devout Buddhists, Tibetans, tourist and anthropologists. It is home away from home, there is something for everyone in here.

Things to See- Day 1

Having the distinction of being the most Tibetan place in India, it follows that McLeod Ganj's attractions are mainly comprised of Buddhist religious and cultural edifices.

Here's an itinerary I've chalked out for you featuring the best that McLeod Ganj has to offer.

1. Tsuglagkhang Complex - (Mid-Morning to Afternoon) (Recommended)00

After a heart breakfast on reaching McLeod Ganj, I suggest you head straight to the Dalai Lama Temple Complex which contains the renowned Tsuglagkhang Temple. The short 2km walk from the center of town is a feast for the eyes where you'll witness the most gorgeous mountains, streams, and oak trees that McLeod Ganj is famous for. You could always choose to hop aboard a bus but the fun lies in walking to the holy spot along with hundreds of other entranced tourists.

The largest Buddhist temple outside of Tibet, a stucco of Shakamuni Buddha sits royally in the center with Padmasambhava and Avalokitesvara, of whom the Dalai Lama is considered to be the current avatar, flanking him on either side and looking toward Tibet for inspiration and strength.

Opposite the main cathedral is the Namgyal Monastery, which serves as the residence of Buddhist monks-in-training. Kalachakra Temple is a must-visit for its mesmerizing murals of the Buddha, frescoes depicting the lives and times of the various Lamas and numerous thangka paintings.

The complex also houses a huge meditation hall, the official residence of His Holiness, the famous canopy funded by celebrity convert Richard Gere and the Namgyal Cafe where you can gorge on some delicious vegetarian lunch.

Page 26: Mc Loedgunj

Tsuglagkhang promises to be a surreal experience with the soft chanting, rhythmic clapping, waving colorful prayer flags and rotating prayer wheels set against the majestic backdrop of the snow-covered Dhauladhar mountains. Click here to see why this traveler highly recommends visiting Tsuglagkhang.

2. Tibet Museum (Late Afternoon) (Recommended)00

Across the Tsuglagkhang Complex is where you'll witness a heartbreaking visual depiction of the cruel Chinese invasion of Tibet and the subsequent exile of the Lama and his followers into India.

Tibet Museum , though small, is armed with a telling array of photographs, interviews and video clips is a great way to get acquainted with the tragic past of Tibet and her people. The museum is a treasure-trove of historical documents, manuscripts, Thangkas, pottery and other handicrafts proudly saluting the cultural and artistic excellence of Tibetan people. You could also indulge in some souvenir shopping here.

Read a review on the museum below:

Moving and informative markw85 1 1 -1 recommends this, Sept 3, 2010I must admit I didn't know a lot about Tibet before going to McLeod Ganj, but this museum is really informative and moving. Tibet's is a truly tragic story, and one which has lost coverage in recent years. There is a film screening each afternoon which is well worth the extra ticket price.

3. Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts- TIPA (Early Evening) (Recommended)00

TIPA is about a 15 minute walk from Mcleod Ganj, on the same lane that the previous two sights lie on. The brainchild of the Lama Himself, TIPA has been established to preserve the Lhamo- a cultural tradition of Tibet that combines music, dance and folk theater. Here's where authentic Tibetan Operas unfold right before your eyes. The live performances are held in the courtyard and even when there are no performances scheduled, you can watch the students rehearsing.

You can also learn the ropes of Tibetan costume and mask making and try your hand at playing local musical instruments in the many workshops conducted in this cultural school.

A visitor shares his experience below:

We also visited the Tibetan Institute of the Performing Arts and watched one of its performers in concert. He played several types of guitars and flutes, while singing traditional Tibetan songs. Unfortunately, our timing was off for seeing a Tibetan Opera, an all-day performance which takes place several times a year.

4. Church of Saint John in the Wilderness (Evening)00

Try to visit this one if you' have the time and are not too exhausted from all the sight-seeing suggestions I've packed into day 1. Day 2 promises to be a challenging one and you'll need to preserve all your energy for it and of course, be well-rested.

Page 28: Mc Loedgunj

Located 1 km away from Mceod Ganj on the road to Dharamsala is a beautiful Anglican church named Church of Saint John in the Wilderness.

A poignant reminder of the town's colonial past, this pretty stone church and a well tended cemetery lie hidden in the cover of Deodar forests. Serving as the memorial of deceased British Viceroy, Lord Elgin, the serene monument is adorned with beautiful Belgian stained glass windows, a token of love from his wife, Lady Elgin, that has steadfastly withstood the ravages of time.

A visitor puts it beautifully:

A visit to the  Anglican church, St.John in the Wilderness is a spiritual, historical and cultural treat.

Things to Do- Day 2

We come to the most awaited day of your trip. I suggest you rise up and set out as early as possible to seize the most from your trek.

1. Trek to Triund (Recommended)00

Triund, located at the foot of the mighty Dhaladhar Mountains, is the shortest day trek from McLeod Ganj. At a distance of approximately 10 kms from the center of town, Triund can be reached by hiking up Bhagsu-Dharamkot trail.

2 kms uphill from the center of McLeod Ganj lies a serene town called Bhagsu famous for its stone quarries, a natural spring, an ancient temple and the icy Bhagsunag Waterfalls.

An upward ascent of 3 kms will lead you to Dharamkot, a picturesque village perched above Mcleodganj and Bhagsu offering a spectacular view of the bustling towns below and of the snow-clad mountain range. The Hippie Haven, you'll find bakeries, meditation schools and arts and craft centers abounding in this 'Little Scotland'. The touristy attractions of Dharamkot include The Tibetan Children's Village (refuge of Tibetan children in exile) and a sacred lake named Dall next to a temple devoted to Lord Shiva. The Galu Devi Mandir, about 4 kms from Dharamkot, makes for a wonderful resting place.

Page 29: Mc Loedgunj

It takes close to 5 hours if you're reasonably fit to reach your destination with sufficient stopovers at tea stalls and food joints. Triund, the point of union of three peaks, is a beautiful green meadow where breathtaking views of the Kangra Valley await you on one side. On the other side lies an illusion that you can reach out and touch the snowclad Dhauladhar range.  5 kms away from Triund lies the snowline called Ilaqa. Even though it doesn't seem too far, the climb is a hundred times more arduous than the trek to Triund.

The downward descent is steep and rather treacherous and takes close to 3 hours.

Here's a great review on Triund:

Post lunch, we set out on a trekking tour to Triund. We saw some beautiful birds. Our guide told us that black bear and leopard are also found here. After reaching Triund we treated our senses to breathtaking views, gorgeous greenery and salubrious climate. The price of all that sweat is indeed worth it. The sight of the mountain so up close- like a sheer vertical snow-speckled wall right in front of you is something you will cherish for a long time. It was such an overwhelming experience.

 (Source: Zimbio)

Here's a very informative blog post on trekking to Triund with some truly amazing pictures.

Some Tips: Wear hard-soled shoes as the trails are strewn with sharp rocks. Carry a lightweight woolen jacket as the weather is sometimes brutal at Triund. Carry sufficient water.

2. Shopping (Recommended)00

After a well-deserved rest, you can head to McLeod Ganj's main bazaar area to feast on some delicious Tibetan fare and to indulge in some retail therapy.

The area is great to pick handwoven Tibetan rugs, handmade wooden masks, paper necklaces and jewelry among other local crafts. Prices quoted are normally modest.

Things to See- Day 3

I thought we should explore attractions a little beyond McLeod Ganj on your final day in the town. Here are some of the gems I suggest that you visit.

1. Norbulingka Institute (Morning- Noon) (Recommended)00

15 kms from McLeodGanj, in Sidhpur district, lies Norbulingka institute. Backed by the vision and blessings of the Lama, this cultural center is where ancient Tibetan arts and crafts are practiced and preserved. The art gallery is studded with creations that are 100% authentic and hand made. The Norbulingka complex has a small temple (Seat of Happiness Temple) and The Losel Museum which has a charming display of Tibetan Dolls.

You can watch local artists breathe life into the religiously and culturally significant Thangka masterpieces. Statue-making, dress designing, metal crafting and wood carving are some of the other skills that are encouraged by the institute. The intricate Thangka paintings and other crafts including replicas of the dolls in the Losel Museum can be purchased at fixed prices from the resident artists at the gift shop.

The Norling café in a pleasant, leafy courtyard is great to grab a quick bite.

You can take a cab directly to the place from McLeod Ganj or drive down to Dharamsala and then catch a public bus to Sidhpur. The journey should not take more than 1 hour each way.

Here's a review on the Institute:

Norblinka       4 out of 5 stars thianne from Oakland Official Tibetan cultural center. See the best artists in their fields create the traditional paintings, clothing, and handicrafts of their culture. A great place to learn more about the Tibetans, and the culture and life they were forced to leave behind in Tibet.

2. Kunal Pathri Temple (Afternoon- Early Evening) (Recommended)00

3 kms from Dharamsala lies Kunal Pathri, a rock-hewn temple devoted to Lord Shiva's wife Kapileshwari. One has to pass through the colorful Kotwali bazaar of Dharamsala and then walk uphill along lush tea terraces to reach the holy spot. Offering vantage views of Dharamsala and the snow-clad mountains in the distance, it's a great place for some fabulous photo-ops.

Here's what a visitor had to say:

Located near the beautiful tea gardens of Dharamsala, Kunal Pathari Temple offers a good view of the Dhauladhar Range. Because of high altitude, Kunal Pathari area greets the visitors with refreshing winds. It is a very ideal place for some memorable walking and to seek the blessings of the mother goddess.

3. War Memorial (Evening)00

Do stop to pay your respect at the War Memorial located at the entrance into Dharamsala. You'll have to go down a dense pine trail peppered with manicured gardens, and poetic pathways to reach the War Memorial.

Built to commemorate the sacrifice of brave Indian soldiers who've laid down their lives post independence, notice the curved wall instead of a straight one to depict the continuity of life after death and immortality of the soul.  The inscriptions on the wall will surely bring a tear to the eye.

You can grab some snacks and refreshments at the cafe near the memorial before you head back to McLeod Ganj.
