BRONCHIAL THERMOPLASTY FOR ASTHMAPresented By

Michael Simoff, Director, interventional Pulmonology and Bronchoscopy, Henry Ford Medical Center

• This is a new procedure being performed on patients that meet the criteria for the diagnosis of severe-persistent asthma.

• During a bronchoscopy, a catheter is inserted into the bronchial airway that when expanded, makes contact with the airway wall.

• Heated energy is applied to that area to reduce the smooth muscle tissue constriction which in turn allows for easier breathing.
