Project Description:

The students will plan, construct, and execute a fan- based talent show. The students will integrate Visual

Communications, Geometry, World History, and English into the processes involved in producing a student voted

talent show. The students will emulate the business processes that Country Music Television (CMT) uses in

designing and executing their fan voted music awards show

Making Academic Connections:

Math: (Geometry)

SPI 3108.1.1 Give precise mathematical descriptions or definitions of geometric shapes in the plane

and space.

SPI 3108.1.3 Use geometric understanding and spatial visualization of geometric solids to solve

problems and/or create drawings.

SPI 3108.4.2 Define, identify, describe, and/or model plane figures using appropriate mathematical

symbols.

SPI 3108.4.5 Describe solids and/or surfaces in three- dimensional space when given two-

dimensional representations for the surfaces of three- dimensional objects.

SPI 3108.4.12 Solve problems involving congruence, similarity, proportional reasoning and/or scale

factor of two similar figures or solids

English: (English II)

SPI 3002.3.1 Proofread a passage for correct punctuation, mechanics, and usage.

SPI 3002.3.14 Select the proper format to convey a set of work-related information.

SPI 3002.3.15 Select the most precise word to provide clarity appropriate to audience and

purpose.

SPI 3002.2.5 Identify rhetorical devices used in a challenging speech (i.e., rhetorical

questions, parallelism and repetition, analogies, hyperbole, metaphors, and similes).

SPI 3002.2.6 Determine the most effective methods of engaging an audience during an oral

presentation (e.g., making eye contact, adjusting speaking rate).

SPI 3002.2.7 Select the most appropriate strategies for participating productively in a team

SPI 3002.5.1 Make inferences and draw conclusions based on evidence in text.

SPI 3002.5.8 Determine whether a given argument employs deductive or inductive

reasoning.

Integrated Curriculum Unit Implementation

Student Performances

21st

Century Skills: Analyzing, Problem-Solving, Oral and Written Communication, Building mutually

beneficial relationships/teamwork, flexibility, time management, independent worker, self-directed

learner, active participation, collaboration/cooperation, thinking and working creatively, inductive

and deductive reasoning, interpret information and draw conclusions, solve unfamiliar problems in

conventional and nonconventional ways, assume shared responsibility and accountability, responsible

and proper use of technology as a tool

Subject: Visual Communication

How important is creativity in

forming and promoting an

awards show?

Create logo for the competition

Develop a color palette to help

identify the show

Create posters/flyers promoting

the talent show

Create posters/flyers promoting

the website to vote for the

talent

Create credentials to be worn by

contest participants and event

staff

Create envelopes and letterhead

for the contest winners

Create programs for the audience

Assist in developing the award

Design website for voting

purposes

Compile video clips of various

talents to upload to the voting

website

Topic: Designing and Executing an Awards Show

Subject: Geometry

How do I recognize

similarity in the real

world and use ratios

to create proportions

that allow me to solve

related problems?

How do I use data to

generate a

conjecture? How do I

support my

conjecture?

Use similarity and scale

factors for set/stage

design

Use Geometry tools and

software to illustrate

constructions

Collect, organize, and

analyze data

Present data in multiple

representations

Subject: World History

What are the ways in which humans have

used to determine excellence since the

beginning of time?

How has technology shaped the

development of our world?

Students will research the different types of

judging systems:

a. Popularity Vote

b. Appointment

c. Line of Succession

Students will pick one event in history for

each type of judging system and create

visuals based upon the positive or

negative impacts of the event. Students

will predict what would happen if a

different type of voting system was used.

Students will create a presentation using

PowerPoint to interpret the basic timeline

of the growth of technology to present

day and its effect on the expansion of

civilizations.

Students will pick one piece of technology

they currently use and track its

transformation from early civilizations.

Activities: Research and Presentation

through use of technology.

Subject: English

How does an understanding of

audience and personal voice

help students write

effectively?

How can language promote

bias?

How do our decisions reveal our

character?

Students will watch clips of

various awards, read the

script of various awards

shows and begin writing the

scripts for the awards show

for the academy.

Students will interpret and

analyze various biased articles

as well as articles that are bias

free. Students will be able to

determine what does or does

not make the article biased.

Students will read a play Julius

Caesar by William

Shakespeare. Students will

examine what makes a hero

and what makes a hero turn

tragic. They will explore

themes of power and

responsibility, as well as

corruption in the personal

and political arenas.
