Drew McGurk - Worksample Thesis: Through the use of anamorphic projection and shape-blending formal processes, spaces and forms can be achieved which are perceived differently from different locations. As one moves through the space, the forms and spaces appear to shift and realign themselves, perceptually changing into something new. The perceived shifting and transformation of spaces creates uniquely dynamic spaces which are perceptually non-static. The non-static, transformative nature of the spaces invokes a sense of wonder as it breaks the archetype of static architecture. Constructed Ambiguity Instructor: Mike McKay Perspective A: The viewer percieves a series of circles within an ellipse, manifested as both solid masses and empty spaces. Perspective B: Once the viewer moves towards the circles, the edges (highlighted in bold lines) of the curves begin to shift and elongate, revealing new forms and spaces.

Thesis: Through the use of anamorphic projection and shape-blending formal processes, spaces and forms can be achieved which are perceived differently from different locations.

Constructed Ambiguity

Instructor: Mike McKay

Perspective A: The viewer percieves a series of circles within an ellipse, manifested as both solid masses and empty spaces.

Perspective B: Once the viewer moves towards the circles, the edges (highlighted in bold lines) of the curves begin to shift and elongate, revealing new forms and spaces.

Design Proposal: My design focuses on experiential energy, in other words, the felt spatial energy which gives spaces their qualities. I selected to focus on two primary spatial qualities/experiences: Monolithic and Tranquility. To harmoniously achieve both qualities in my design, I chose a hybrid program: a chapel garden. Though the material hybridization of concrete and plant life, the two material’s experiential qualities contrast, combine, and offset one another, allowing the emergence of spatial qualities which are unique from sensations caused individually by either concrete or plant life.
