Implied Space :: a line or plane which does not exist physically, yet exists as an implied threshold to differentiate spaces. Understanding of the non-existent line creates a spatial divide, separating volumes and creating a unique atmosphere lacking at least one line and/or plane of enclosure.

The ambiguity of “Implied Space” demands a more rigid framework in which to operate, requiring specific elements in order to form powerful symbiotic relationships. Five elements were determined to be critical to an idealized living space and conductive toward generating Implied Spaces. A single element allows Implied Space to remain flexible enough to tolerate experimentation in various directions while simultaneously reinforcing previously engaged elements, readily witnessed in the interaction between horizontal planes and materiality, or light and indoor/outdoor. These elements become complimentary to one another when creating Implied Spaces, validating the significance of each element in its own right. designing by subtraction, giving primacy to the void

Religious / Housing

3rd Year StudioLocation: Charleston, SCProgram: Mixed Use Date : Spring 2013

A mixed use project incorporating a large church and community center with individual apartments penetrating into the volume. Sited looking out onto the harbor, the church utilizes a massive 40’ operable door which extends the church out into the park directly across the street on important holidays. The church embraces an ethereal quality, with gradually larger levels seeming to float above one another and open the space as one transitions further. A customized curtain wall system allows for concrete panels to be hung to create a filter for light and weather, as well as provide focus and privacy in the lower levels. Penetration of the apartment units into the church itself creates a unique dialogue in which both programmatic elements respond to one another through side alters formed by the units as well as stained glass portals.

A one bedroom, minimal foot-print apartment with fully integrated furnishing with the exception of a single chair. The apartment is set at a series of slight elevation changes to provide open, public spaces in the courtyard created by the upper levels and entry way. Moving vertically through the space grants privacy through different types of glass and provides ample space and views through a small balcony, while simultaneously creating a car port below. The structure is based solely upon the glazed courtyard to provide light into all interior spaces as well as the core of circulation throughout the apartment.

Visitor’s Center

3rd Year Competition1st Place EntryLocation: Blue Ridge Mountains Date: Jan 28 - Feb 1

A week long partner project and first place entry. The proposition challenges traditional abrupt encounters with visitor centers. Through provocative architectural elements, the architecture develops permanence; conveying a playful space for leisure, education, and thought. The garden is a supplemental destination to the visitor’s center, providing an artificial reflection of the natural surroundings and displaying a variety of indigenous and endangered plat life. Placement of the garden n the site creates a powerful transitional element, while providing an additional site for visitors to engage and explore.

A unique project proposal, this athletic center provides an ideal location for triathletes to train year round. The facility is centered on a 200 meter track, with a massive 15m cantilever curve of the track suspended between the pool and gym. The facility itself is sited on a small lake in the Peaks of Otter and the structure provides an ideal location to host a triathlon. The central courtyard created from the track functions as the start and transition space for all three events into the surrounding area and the interior facility mimics the same sequence of transition for the athletes during training.

A progressive, semester long project stemming from a single light screen and transitioning into an urban park in downtown New York. A light screen of varying opacities was the initial step created through multiple strips of translucent acrylic curved into a “C” shape. Through stringing hundreds of these spherical volumes at varying heights, a pocket of interactive privacy was created in a corner of Cowgill Hall. The user could rotate the individual strips to create full spheres and provide a small private room, or stack the layers upon one another and create a more open, public space. Finally, the sphere is blown up to encompass two opposing benches and is operable on a scale the can create privacy for groups within each bench element.
