This concept abandoned after dialogue with structural engineers made it clear that engineering this canopy to resist wind and snow load would be a great and expensive challenge. The artist to be commissioned ultimately felt uncomfortable pursuing the project.

American School Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro Aventur founder Gary Johnson led the design of this new recently completed private school built in Barra da Tijuca, the district hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics. The beautiful site with mountains in the background and near the Atlantic Ocean. To fit the K-8 building program, soccer and baseball fields, sport courts and parking into an eccentric shaped seven acre site, the architect developed a four story oval shaped school building. To maximize the ground level for the soccer field, baseball field, parking and pick-up and drop of of children by bus and car, Two sport courts, running track and many four-square courts on the rooftop. Design Principal: Gary L. Johnson Design Architect: AVENTUR, LLC Execution Architect: ARQ URB Area: 13,500 SM (145,000 SF) Construction Completion: 2013
Brazil Interna:onal School
Brazil Interna:onal School Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro These photos of the school’s atrium, skylight and stairs toward the end of construction process were taken 17 December, 2013. A two story atrium hovering over the gymnasium provides ample natural light so that no artificial lighting is needed during the day. Stairs are placed on axis at the ends of the atrium to sharing natural light and views of activity in the gymnasium. The original skylight design was to be flat structural glass or glass block to allow it to also function as a dance floor - an idea inspired by the popular role dance plays in Brazilian culture. At night, ambient light from the gymnasium below would illuminate the glass dance floor. Or laser beams and movies projected from below would create a dramatic effect. Rather than a flat skylight, a shallow pitched skylight and safety railing were installed. (Upper right)

Café Campana, Museue d’Orsay, Paris. From the museum’s website: “Just after the Impressionist Gallery is the Café Campana, a place that inspires the imagination. Designed by the Campana brothers, famous Brazilian designers, the café transports the visitor into a dream-like aquatic environment, directly inspired by Emile Gallé, and a tribute to Art Nouveau. Here the chef presents the classic menu of a Parisian brasserie, with promptly served meals, great salads, woks and pastries.”
Favela Chair, hand made wooden chair. Original made from wood scraps from a carpenters shop. Collection Museum of Modern Art, NYC.
Vermehla Chair, Campana Brothers This chair will take everyone by surprise. While it looks like a mass of string it's actually a steel structure with hand-woven and dyed cotton rope. This piece incorporates many aspects of weaving: intertwined threads form the ropes, which are then hand-woven into upholstery. Five hundred meters of red cotton ropes are used to create these random looking loops, but, in reality, there is a structured method in the rather chaotic padding. Collection Museum of Modern Art, NYC.

La Gloriette by Fernando & Humberto Campana. A gloriette is a structure or building constructed in a garden setting made to work with and compliment the surrounding area. This 12th century French term means “little glory.” What we’ve got here, designed by the Campaña brothers for Veuve Clicquot, is the “La Gloriette,” a contemporary version of the gloriette done in the playful nature of our modern day design world. Veuve Clicquot is both a champagne house in Reims, France and a brand of premium champagne. This “La Gloriette” was made to sit near this house in France. This house being a place that’s a perfect model of 19th century French gardens, a gloriette was a perfect accent to be built. The Campaña brothers have created a piece of art that is “intended to celebrate the art of playful conversation and the enjoyment of good food and drink.”
Inspired by a native Brazilian Cashew Tree, the Campana Brothers' paviliion installed on the streets of Dashilar hutong connects earth and sky, shadow and light. Beijing, China
View of Zig Zag trellis from above skyway is as interes:ng as view from pedestrians passing through at ground level.
Zig Zag trellis will provide a colorful background for photos, drawing visitors to the MCTC Campus.
Campana Brothers suggest we reinforce existing light column supports to be able to serve also as canopy supports. One structural engineer we spoke with thinks this may work. We will price along with standard post footings & core drilling bench concept.
Least expensive webbing we have found www.uscargocontrol.com Rolls of polyester webbing available from 1” to 12” width. This is an extremely strong webbing, but no guarantee against fading. We are also evaluating Architec 400 Series and Polytex, both manufactured by Polyfab. For specs on both these fabrics see: http://www.polyfabusa.com

Gary Johnson Porcolio 777 Linwood Residence, Saint Paul This new house was design and general contracted by architect Gary Johnson as his family’s personal residence in Crocus Hill, a historic neighborhood in Saint Paul. The house was designed to respect the height and roof geometry, and materials used on the block. The terrace extends the living space of the first floor outdoors. The same traver:ne marble stone is used to cover the terrace. Seasonal planters provide privacy and character for the terrace. This landscape element adds to curb appeal and can be enjoyed when viewed from inside the house.
