Words from our MCYO Conductors

SYMPHONY – Scott Herman, conductorWow – truly a special season to remember! Beethoven’s First, Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance

No. 4, Vaughn Williams’ Sea Songs, and Verdi’s Nabucco. Four masterworks works performed intheir original form. In addition, let’s not forget about the beauty the musicians exhibited in theGreensleeves and Bach’s Sheep May Safely Graze, or the rousing percussion in Quest for the Grail.E.T. was a big closer for the May program. We should be all quite proud of the accomplishmentsof the 2008-2009 MCYO Symphony.

Next year we will feature a guest soloist in March, and of course, we will build our skillswith each concert so that we can also experience some great masterworks again in 2009-2010.

PHILHARMONIC – Dave Levin, conductorCongratulations to all Philharmonic musicians for such an exceptional season this year.

The growth of the ensemble was demonstrated by not only the quality of the performances, butthe depth of the music performed. From the orchestral suite (Masquerade) in December, to theSymphony Sampler in March, and culminating with an entire Tchaikovsky symphony in May.Although we were all exhausted after the May performance, there was certainly a look ofsatisfaction and accomplishment on everyone’s faces during the extended adulation offered to usby the audience!

As we endeavor to emulate the musical accomplishments of professional orchestras, welived with and learned about some of theworld’s greatest orchestral compositions.Indeed everyone has certainly developed anappreciation for the work and dedicationinvolved in producing a successfulperformance of this level of literature.Knowing the talent and capabilities ofMCYO’s musicians, I look forward toprogramming several new, challenging, andexciting works for the 2009-2010 season.

MCYO ALUMNI NEWSSmiley Hsu:

MCYO violinist 1976-78, Rockville HS. Played under Chester Petranek. Attended JohnsHopkins University majoring in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, jointlyparticipating at Peabody Conservatory for lessons and ensembles. Still loves playing violin and isglad he had an early and strong foundation. Belongs to a string quartet and a piano trio, whichmeet bi-monthly. Performs for friends and family at parties and gatherings. Smiley lives locallyand currently owns a Silver Spring software business, specializing in software for restaurants.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA – Pablo Saelzer, conductorI am very excited about introducing the new Chamber Orchestra! Upon arriving at

MCYO 2 years ago, I noticed that, given the size of our full orchestras, there was no appropriateensemble to present the classical repertoire. Most symphonies by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven

are written for a moderate number of strings, eight woodwinds, two horns, two trumpets andtimpani. Having a new Chamber Orchestra of proper size, coupled with the extraordinary talent

of our players will undoubtedly make this glorious music shine.

Audition Tips for Young ArtistsWhen in the warm-up room:

•Focus on yourself, not on the other players around you.Be confident in your own playing.

•Use your normal warm-up routine.•Only start your excerpts and the transition spots in

your solos. Think through the rest. Save your run-through foryour performance.

In the audition room:•Always empty water and tune before your performance.•Think of the tempo before you start.•Breathe.•Remember that mistakes happen, keep going.•Your goal is to give a performance that possesses accurate and steady rhythm, pitch accuracy, solid

intonation, beautiful tone and musicality. Show us your very best!

AUDITION TIPS straight from our Conductors!

Audition Tips for Chamber StringsMr. Orozco's tips for Chamber Strings:

•Rhythm is vital in the orchestra. Make sure yourrhythm is accurate and steady.

•Don't tap your foot while playing!•Arrive early with plenty of time to warm up.•Make sure your instrument is in tune.

Audition Tips for SymphonyMr. Herman's #1 practice tip is::

•Work on things SLOWLY, with a lot ofrepetition.•Avoid reinforcing poor habits, and always practice until it sounds great.•Then keep on practicing it sounding great!•The more times it sounds great, the more consistently it will sound great!

Audition Tips for PhilharmonicMr. Levin's Audition tip for Philharmonic musicians:

•Show us what you CAN do…not what you cannot (yet). Hopefully you and your teacher will havechosen wisely as to what you will master by August. Selections that are “almost” prepared don’t reallydemonstrate what you are truly capable of playing.

•Make your scales “beautiful”. Sight-read with phrasing, dynamics, and vibrato. Demonstrate yourmusicality with every note you play during the audition.

•If you are required to prepare an orchestral excerpt for the audition, take it seriously and prepare it well.It is likely to be from a work that will be performed this season. This portion ofyour audition will show uswhat you are capable of preparing in a relatively short period of time.

•Finally, MCYO is looking for those musicians who demonstrate the desire and willingness to put in thesame diligent practice on the orchestra music as was done for your audition. Should you be accepted into oneofMCYO’s orchestras, please remember what it took to get in. The same effort will be expected ofyou for thenext 9 months.

Audition Tips for Chamber OrchestraRegarding the solo selections: It is more important HOW you play, not WHAT you play. A simple piece

played with good sound, intonation, rhythm and musicality will give a much better impression to the judgethan a piece that is beyond the player's technical and musical capacity. Actually, it is very irritating to hear aplayer attempt a concerto, sonata, etc. that is not well prepared or clearly beyond the players ability. Choosesomething that will bring forth your strengths.

Regarding the excerpts: Rhythm is the most important aspect.Intonation comes next, then the quality of the sound. Dynamics and phrasing and overall musical detail is lessimportant.

Regarding nerves: Remember we all (the conductors) know very well how it feels to play an audition. Wehave been there, we know it sounded better at home!

Page 7: MCYO Tempo July 09

Mr. Levin:I mean besides practicing for your audition, of course. If you are curious as to what conductors do,

there is very little vacation involved. Ok, that’s not entirely true. Between the countless hours ofmusicresearch, score study and preparation, program planning, part preparations such as bowings, transpositions, copying, etc., looking for new musicians to fill the vacancies created by our graduates, summer brass quintet recital rehearsals and performances, I will be preparing for the SECOND ANNUALMCYO GOLF CLASSIC!!!! I have to admit that my performance at the inaugural tournament lastOctober was not a particularly proud memory for me. Therefore I have vowed to do all that is possible toplay much more competitively this year. I invite every golfer in our MCYO community to join usOctober 16, 2009 for a wonderful day of golf, great food, delightful camaraderie while at the same timebenefiting MCYO and its incredibly gifted musicians. If you are not a golfer, please come out and supportthose ofus who are hard at work on the course. Volunteers will be needed to help and chamber groups toperform!

SUMMER FUN for our Conductors!

Mr. Orozco's summer:Starling-DeLay violin seminar at Julliard. Trip to Cuba. Levine

Summer Camp. Sight Reading Workshop at Strathmore. Moving toMaryland! ! !

Mrs.VWill enjoy time with her husband and girls this summer. While

the beach will be a popular spot to find the Van Petten’s thissummer, Mrs. V will also share in a few music and dance classes withher girls and take advantage ofmany local performances in the area.Black Rock, WolfTrap and Strathmore offer many inexpensive andsometimes free opportunities to enjoy many genres ofmusic and art. Grab your blanket and picnicbasket and enjoy our local performance venues.

Mr.Herman:My wife and I are both teachers so summers provide a great opportunity to

catch up on life. The family time will be very important this summer. I am aperson who likes to try anything and everything so in addition to my musiccareer, I also like to fix and repair things, both in the home and withautomobiles. I enjoy photography and web design and do a little of bothprofessionally for a few companies. I play too much golf and cycle. Theenvironment is important so this year I added solar electricity to my house. Mywife just caught me up to the current generation by buying me an iPhone. Atfirst I thought I didn’t need it. Why this? Now I am addicted to it. I just

completed 20 years of teaching band and orchestra at Cabin John Middle School.

Mr. Saelzer:Immediately after the Sinfonia's concert at the Kennedy Center on May 10 I flew to Chile. There I had

two programs to conduct with the Orquesta Clásica of the Universidad de Santiago. This is one ofhe fiveprofessional orchestras in Santiago the capital ofChile (population 6 million). I had been there the yearbefore and was invited back for these two concerts. During those weeks in Chile I also worked with theorchestra of the Facultad de Artes (the music and dance school) of the Universidad de Chile, the oldestand most prestigious university in Chile. This was a very interesting experience for me because at the timeI moved to the US (in 1993) I was not a yet a conductor, so this was the first time I worked with a studentorchestra in my own country.

After a one day stay back in DC I traveled to Mississippi to conduct the orchestra of the MississippiSymphony's Premier Orchestra Institute. This is a summer camp with three orchestras and a very excitingensemble where the camp's coaches and guest artists join college students and the more advance of thehigh school age players for a couple of concerts that are all about the joy ofplaying great music together.

Mr. Levin’s Road Trip Memories

I am pleased to report that MCYO's first trip to Europe in 10 years was a rousing success! From the points of view as conductor, chaperone, and tourist, I can honestly say that allexpectations for this excursion were either met or surpassed. Our musicians rehearsed for thetour with great dedication in preparation for what was ahead. When we arrived at each performance venue, they carriedthemselves as professionals in the warm-ups as well as each ofthe performances. This is the first time in ten years that MCYOhas performed for audiences that were NOT mostly parents, friends, and relatives. Our audiences in Europe received ourmusic with enthusiasm, smiles, and extended periods ofapplause. In response, the students kept performing better andbetter. By the last concert in Prague, where we played to a fullhouse, the orchestra was as musical as most any MCYOorchestra has ever been. If you followed our progress on the"blog", I hope you were able to pick up the vibe as to how wellwe were received and how much the orchestra enjoyedperforming in the various venues...from concert hall to publichall, to church.

As one of the chaperones for the trip, I couldn't helpnotice how responsible the students were throughout theweek. Our tour escort repeatedly remarked at how well thestudents looked after on another. This certainly made the jobof the chaperones much easier. Breakfasts were wellattended, students always reported on time to the bus aftersightseeing, and bed checks (believe it or not) went verysmoothly. It was also quite clear that over the course of thetrip many new (and hopefully long-lasting) friendships weremade. A number of students remarked to me that they hadseen each other in rehearsal throughout the year but didn'tREALLY know the person. After a week of traveling andperforming together much of this changed. I hope that thesenew acquaintances become long lasting friendships.

Letter from Petr Kolar, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic:

Dear members of the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra,

I have been notified about your upcoming performance in the Czech Republic, and I would like to

wish you the best of luck and a lot of success during your concerts in Prague.

I am very pleased to welcome to my country an orchestra with such a long tradition and

accomplishment that reaches beyond the boundaries of the United States.

I certainly hope you will enjoy performing in front of a Czech audience, and I also hope you will

have time to enjoy sightseeing in the city ofPrague with all the attractions our capital offers.

Pictures from the Tour... more on back cover

Finally, as a tourist, words cannot describe the beauty and majesty ofmany of the places wevisited and explored. Yes, for most of the trip everyone was tired, but I think everyone also knewthat they could sleep when they got home. While in Europe, it was important to take in as muchart, history, scenery, and architecture as possible. We came a long way to see, hear, and tastewhat Vienna, Prague, and their surroundings had to offer. Once again, the students andchaperones tried much of the food, learned about the history, absorbed much of the culture, andexplored on their own and with friends as many places as the itinerary would allow.

Mr. Levin’s Road Trip Memories continued...

For those of you that shared our journey with us each day on the MCYO blog, I hope youwere able to glean something of the excitement of the experiences we had for that week in June.Thank you for making it possible for MCYO to organize a performing tour of this nature.Although only a week in duration, the memories will of course last a lifetime. Maybe we willhave an opportunity to travel again in the not-too-distant future.

More Pictures from the Tour... and comments from the musicians...

My impression ofeverything was overall amazement!

Everything was absolutely beautiful andplaying for the

people who came to listen was worthwhile. The people who

listened there were people who really love music andknow

those pieces.

I loved everything about the trip, despite the intense amount

ofwalking in the tours. Even though it rained in Vienna, I

still have a great memory ofthe city.

Cesky Krumlov was great partly because it was very pretty,

andalso because it was the first time everybody could enjoy

being outside and everybody was in a goodmood.

It was the best trip/vacation I’ve ever been on!
