Community supports fallen officersArea encouragedto use blue lights

By HEIDI [email protected]

MORRIS – When Linda

Goff got a Facebook invite

from a friend to change her

porch light to blue in honor

of fallen police officers, she

quickly joined.

“My Facebook friend from

the hometown where I grew

up is a dedicated police dis-

patcher,” Goff said. “She sent

me the invite and I said I

would because I think there

is so much negativity put

out about our police officers.

I wanted to show them sup-

port.”

The nationwide event

was created by D.J. Jessup,

a former police officer from

Bedford County, Virginia. It

now has more than 100,000

supporters who have agreed

to turn their porch light blue

in support of police officers

everywhere.

Morris Police Chief Brent

Dite said the blue light proj-

ect started in Illinois after the

line of duty deaths of Pontiac

officer Casey Kohlmeier and

his K-9 Draco. The two were

hit and killed by a DUI driver

while sitting at the Interstate

55 turnaround just north of

Pontiac.

“The death of the Pontiac

officer hit close to home. He’s

the son of my cousin,” Dite

said. “After his death, I had a

blue light on my porch until

we moved this year.”

Project Blue Light is a na-

tionwide recognition of offi-

cers who have died in the line

of duty. To honor their mem-

ory, a blue light is placed

outside a home or in a win-

dow. This originally started

for the holiday season, but

the movement’s website said

most people keep their blue

lights on all year long.

It also suggests turning on

a blue light for National Po-

lice Week in May.

Goff said she believes it

is important to show sup-

port, especially in a small

town such as Morris, where

residents know their police

officers as neighbors and

friends.

“There has been so much

controversy about police of-

ficers lately, and in a small

town like Morris we need

to show our officers that we

have their backs just like

the people in New York have

their officers’ backs,” Goff

said. “It’s important to show

support to those who defend

us and give us their time,

whether they are soldiers or

police officers.”

Dite said the department

appreciates the resident sup-

port.

“For our officers, any kind

of support from the commu-

nity is important to them,” he

said. “Police work is police

work wherever you are, but

at this time we are in a state

of awareness to what is going

on around us.”

The off icial Facebook

event is schedule to run until

Jan. 7. It started Thursday.

The event page reads, “Re-

place your porch light with a

blue light bulb for one week

to honor all police officers

that have fallen in the line of

duty. These brave men and

women have sacrificed ev-

erything for us so let’s show

our support.”

Morris to have write-in candidates in primaryBy CHRISTINA

CHAPMAN–VAN [email protected]

MORRIS – Two candidatesrunning for Morris officesthat had their names withheldfrom the primary ballot by theMorris Electoral Board willofficially run as write-in can-didates.

Earlier this month, the Mor-ris Municipal Officers Elector-al Board ruled in favor of theobjectors to the petitions of

Doug Hayse for alderman andMary Callahan for city clerk.

With the ruling, Hayse, a Re-publican who sought to run for2nd Ward alderman, and Calla-han, a Republican who soughtto run for city clerk, will not beon the primary ballot.

The objections to the candi-dates’ petitions for office werefiled because their petitionswere not fastened according tostate statute requirements.

Both Hayse and Callahanrecently filed paperwork with

the Grundy County clerk andthe city clerk declaring theirintentions to run as write-incandidates.

Second Ward incumbent Ju-lian Houston and current CityClerk Carol Adair, both Repub-licans running to keep theirseats, will have their names onthe ballot.

Since they are write-in can-didates, voters must write inHayse’s or Callahan’s nameson the ballot to vote for them.

The primary is Feb. 24.

Residents requestingvariance for garage height

By HEIDI [email protected]

MORRIS – The MorrisZoning Board of Appeals hasapproved a recommendationto the Morris City Councilto allow a code variance toEric and Lorie Shear for afreestanding garage at theirCreek Drive home.

Morris Building and Zon-ing Officer Bill Chesharecksaid the city created an ordi-nance prohibiting any free-standing garage from beingtaller than 15 feet.

“The city created the or-dinance to prevent residentsfrom building a freestandinggarage with living quartersabove it,” Cheshareck said.

Eric Shear requested avariance, which would allowhim to build the structure

with a 16∏ foot height so thestructure would match hishome. The garage will nothave a residence above it.

“I want to make it looklike the house,” Shear said.“Our first floor is not a stan-dard 8-foot ceiling height, soit raises the height of the ga-rage.”

Board member Bill But-ton said he didn’t think any-one would notice the 1∏ footdifference and he saw noproblem with it.

No one from the publicappeared before the boardto speak for or against theproposal.

The board voted to rec-ommend its approval to theCity Council, which willvote on it at the next reg-ularly scheduled meetingMonday.

Silly objections overfiling must cease

Every election cycle, the same politicaldance plays out. Months before voters havean opportunity to select their represen-tatives, a single person or small group ofpeople try to make that choice for them.

In the run-up to the election, every can-didate interested in running for office filesreams of paperwork with state, county andlocal officials to declare their candidacy.Included in that paperwork are signaturesof supportive voters, economic disclosureforms, a statement of candidacy and loyaltyoath.

And once those papers are filed, people, often with political ties to one person oranother, come out to view those papers, looking for any violation of filing rulesthey can find.

Sometimes, those violations are large, but more often than not, they are technicalviolations of rules. Such was the case inMorris, where two candidates were dingedfor not properly fastening their paperwork.

Discussion before the local ElectoralBoard degenerated to a discussion of thetype and color of paper clip used to keepall these papers together. Ultimately, thepair was removed from the ballot, but havedeclared write-in candidacies.

Both these people may have made finepublic officials. But unless they run strongwrite-in campaigns, a difficult task, no onewill have the chance to find out.

There is an argument to be made aboutpaying attention to detail. If a candidatecannot follow the rules in the run-up toan election, what will they do if they areelected?

At the same time, when politicians haveto be more concerned about fastener typesor ink color than about issues faced intheir municipalities and districts, there’ssomething terribly wrong.

This is a recent phenomenon in Morris.Such objections are not typical there. Butthere are several candidate objectionspending throughout Will and Grundycounties.

When people are removed for technicaland inane reasons, it contributes to votercynicism – which politicians often bemoanwhen it suits them.

Rather than play political games, we allwould be better served if candidates wereallowed to run on their ideas. That’s not aradical concept, but these days, it’s becom-ing increasingly rare.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of

speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.THE FIRSTAMENDMENT

Will Obama defy Congress on Gitmo prisoners?President Barack

Obama has long advocatedclosing the U.S. terroristprison in GuantanamoBay, Cuba. He likely wouldhave done it long ago, hadCongress not stopped him.

Now, however, Obamais not in the mood to abideby anything Congresssays. And he is againtalking about closingGuantanamo.

The result could bean ugly and protractedfight between the presi-dent and lawmakers ofboth parties. But it’s alsopossible Obama will avoida conflict and simply usehis executive authority torelease a prisoner here, aprisoner there, until Guan-tanamo is very nearlyempty – all done withoutany meaningful debate.

Meanwhile, as he hasdone with immigration, the environment andCuba, Obama will essen-tially dare Congress todo anything about it. It’sall part of the new execu-tive-action presidency.

Back in 2010, whenthe House and Senatewere still controlled byDemocrats, huge bipar-

tisan majorities opposedObama’s plan to closeGuantanamo and transferits inmates to the UnitedStates. A defense spendingbill passed unanimouslyby the Senate in December2010 barred the presidentfrom spending any fundsto transfer inmates to theUnited States or to closethe prison.

Whatever the case,Obama will soon facean essentially unsolv-able problem. Of the 132remaining inmates, thereis a hard core of perhaps 40or 50 who, because of thenature of their terrorist ac-tivity and their detentions, the United States willnever charge with crimes, will never put on trial andwill never release.

In a May 21, 2009,speech at the National Ar-chives outlining detaineepolicy, Obama admittedthat those inmates present“the toughest single issuethat we will face” in trying

to close Guantanamo.“These are people who, ineffect, remain at war withthe United States,” thepresident said.

Granted, it is not a goodthing that there are pris-oners whom the UnitedStates must keep behindbars for life without evercharging or trying them. But that is just one of thebaleful effects of the waron terror. The question is,where should those prison-ers be held?

Obama, the consti-tutional law professor, appears to believe thereis some magic way tobring them into the UnitedStates, put them in thecivilian justice system, and never grant them thebasic constitutional rightsof charge and trial. Whowould be comfortable withthat?

It seems obvious thatthe best place for suchprisoners is somewhereoutside the United States. If such detentions have toexist – and they do, for thissmall group – it just so hap-pens there is a prison at anAmerican facility in Cubathat is perfect for the job.

The president canwrestle all he wants, buthe’s not going to find a wayto imprison inmates insidethe United States withoutcharge or trial that is, inObama’s words, “consis-tent with our values.” Thebest way to deal with thosecases is to keep them inGuantanamo until theydie.

The New York Timesrecently reported that theadministration hopes that“if it can shrink the inmatepopulation to below 100,Congress will revoke a lawthat bars the transfer of de-tainees into the country.”That was unlikely whenDemocrats controlledCongress, and it is moreunlikely with Republicansin charge. The only ques-tion is whether Obama willtry to find a way aroundCongress and the law.

Whatever the presidentdoes, he can’t change thefact that Guantanamo isthe best answer to a verydifficult problem.

Morris’ Patterson, Newark’s Clausel honored at PlanoBy RYAN WOODEN

Shaw Media Correspondent

PLANO – With four areaboys basketball teams com-peting in the always-diffi-cult Plano Christmas Clas-sic during the past week, there were plenty of ways toconsume high school hoops.Whether they watched online, listened on the radio or fol-lowed along on Twitter, fansgot to enjoy 24 teams of vary-ing size and makeup in a trulyunique setting.

Dixon ultimately won the52nd edition of the Classic, and those four area teams –Morris, Newark, Seneca andCoal City – finished third,11th, 16th and 24th, respec-tively. Both the Redskins andNorsemen finished their tour-naments with a critical vic-tory for momentum and theywere also both rewarded withseeing one of their playersvoted onto the 18-person Pla-no Christmas Classic all-tour-nament team.

Voted on by participat-ing coaches and select mediamembers, all -tournamentteam voting concluded at 8:30p.m. Monday night and wasannounced after the finaleof Dixon and Mendota. Mor-ris’ Austin Patterson andNewark’s Jack Clausel wereamong the players selected.

For Morris, Patterson’s17.3 points and 8.0 reboundsa game were enough to leadthe team in both categories.During the course of Morris’four games, Patterson pouredin 26, 10, 14 and 19 points, respectively. He also led thetournament in made 3-point-ers.

“It’s a pretty good feeling,”Patterson said of being namedall-tournament. “But I couldhave never done it withoutmy teammates.”

In the third-place gameagainst Aurora Christian,Patterson scored all 19 of hispoints after the first quar-ter and he hit several criti-cal shots down the stretch tokeep the Eagles at bay as theyattempted to mount a come-back. It was a nice way to re-bound after a disappointingloss to Mendota in the semifi-nals the previous night.

“It felt pretty good to endthe tournament with a win.Yesterday’s game wasn’t avery good one, so we had tocome back tonight and seewhat we could actually do,”Patterson said.

M e a n w h i l e , N e w a r k ’ sJack Clausel put together hisall-tournament run despite

having been under the weath-er. Less than a week aftermissing a game time becauseof illness, Clausel still wasn’tfeeling great, but he managedto put up 16 points and 6.2 re-bounds a game in Newark’sfive outings.

Clausel saved his best per-formance for last, pouring in

22 points and grabbing sevenrebounds to go along withthree assists in Newark’s90-84 overtime win againstGenoa-Kingston in the 11th-place game. Clausel was oneof four Norsemen to score atleast 18 points in an incredi-bly entertaining ballgame.

“Coming into this, I reallydidn’t know what to expect. We haven’t played much andwe really hadn’t gelled as a

team yet,” Clausel said. “I ac-tually thought we played pret-ty well. The Aurora Christiangame was bad, but other thanthat we came together prettynicely as a team.”

Clausel managed to putup double figures in each ofNewark’s five games as he ledthe team in scoring. Howev-er, just behind him was hisbrother Will, a sophomore, and after being left off theteam, Clausel hopes the twocan both make it in 2015.

“He played a lot better thanI did. He really kind of pickedup the slack for us most of thetime,” Clausel said. “We wantto play for the championshipnext year. We want to play at8 [p.m.] and then if we bothmake all-tournament that’dbe nice, too.”

Morris’ Jake Walker andSeneca’s Ross McCormickalso received considerationfor their performances. How-ever, most ballots had beencast by the time Walkerpoured in 16 first-half pointson his way to a team-high 23in the win over Aurora Chris-tian.

Mankind must work with nature, not against itMany years ago when my

sons were just small boys,we visited relatives on avacation. On that trip, wewent to a local park that has abeautiful small river runningthrough it.

Many other families wadedin the river, so we decided tojoin them. The cool streamwas a welcome relief from thesweltering July sun. Beforelong, my boys noticed all thesmooth river rocks under thecrystal clear water. Like kidswill do, they reached into thevelvety stream and pluckedsome stones from the bottom.

Soon they had a nice pileof rocks. The river divertedaround their creation andcontinued on its way. We hada blast. Then something unbe-lievable happened. A womanapproached my family fromupstream.

“You shouldn’t be doingthat,” she said.

“Doing what?” I asked.“Piling rocks. You’re

disrupting nature’s naturalflow,” she scolded.

I furled my eyebrows and

responded to her, “You’restanding in front of a dam.How is that not disruptingnature’s natural flow?” Thewoman snorted and left.I couldn’t wrap my headaround what just took place.

On my most recent tripI had plenty of time to lookout the window as we drove.Fourteen hours in the cargives a person some oppor-tunity to notice things. Wepassed many dammed upwaterways, we drove throughAppalachian Mountains thathad been logged, mined, andcarved apart with interstatesand tunnels. We even tra-versed through thousands ofacres that grew with second-,third-, fourth-, or maybe evenfifth-generation conifers.

My sons asked how youcould tell, and then they toonoticed and figured out thatnatural forests do not grow inperfectly symmetrical rows.No matter where I looked itwas virtually impossible tofind land that was not touchedby mankind in some way.

The crafting and manip-

ulating of the landscape isnothing new. Often times weassociate this sort of processwith modern times. We seebulldozers working and onlythink of the present.

Native populations un-derstood the need to changethe landscape to suit theirneeds long before Europeansarrived. The MississippianCulture built huge moundsthat can still be seen inplaces like Cahokia today. The Incans created vast andsweeping terraces across themountain ranges of SouthAmerica to assist in cultivat-ing their crops. The examplesgo on and on.

Why that woman so manyyears ago ridiculed my familyfor playing in a quaint riveris beyond me. She must havebeen so focused on what wasimmediately in front of hershe had no idea how crazy she

sounded scolding me whilestanding in front of an over-flow dam.

I’m glad that there aremany places in our nationnow where the goal is to keepthe land in its purest formpossible. It is a good thing tokeep open spaces wild andfree wherever we can, but tothink that this land that laybefore us is the same as it wasin the past is unreasonable.

I was reading anotherrecent article about theintroduction of 20 bison backto a park near Dixon. It is thefirst time in nearly 200 yearsthese animals have roamedwild in the Prairie State. The

article went on to explainhow the bison were critical inthe maintenance of a healthyprairie ecosystem. Whensettlers killed them off, thelandscape changed.

Is that state park today anyless beautiful than that sameland 200 years ago? I wouldn’tthink so. Different? Yes, butstill amazing despite the vastdifferences. Nature is a pow-erful force. So is mankind. The key is to figure out howwe can work together for thebetterment of both.

CROSSWORD SUDOKU BRIDGE by Phillip Alder

CELEBRITY CIPHER

PUZZLES

Dennis Bilde from Denmark is nowtoo old for junior events, but his finaljunior deal ever was memorable.

In the auction, North’s two-no-trump response showed four or morespades and at least game-invitationalstrength.

If West (Majka Bilde, Dennis’ sister)had led the diamond ace against sixspades, it would have defeated theslam and ruined the story.

When, though, she led the heartnine, South won with his ace, drewtrumps, cashed his other two hearttricks, discarding the diamond kingfrom his hand, ruffed a diamond in hishand, crossed to dummy with a trumpand ruffed the last diamond. Nowdeclarer had to play the club suit foronly one loser.

How did he read the deal?South felt sure that if East or West

had six or seven diamonds, he or shewould have entered the auction. Sodeclarer decided that the diamondswere 5-5.

Furthermore, the carding in heartssuggested that West had begun withfive. If so, West had started with 2-5-5-1 distribution.

Backing his judgment, Bilde led alow club toward the dummy. WhenWest played the nine, declarer coveredwith dummy’s 10. East won with hisking and returned a low club, but Southplayed low from his hand to make hiscontract.

That was very well read. Also notethat if West had had a singleton clubhonor, she would have been end-played. On her forced red-suit return, declarer would have ruffed in the dum-my and sluffed a club from his hand.

Then he would have run the clubjack to get home.

How do you handle

the club suit?

DEAR ABBYDear Abby: After a year of

separation and divorce, I havedecided to dip into the onlinedating world at 45. My planwas to carefully select threeto five men over the next fewmonths and just date, withoutdiving into a relationship orinto bed.

To my surprise, the firstman I met, “Darren,” is a greatguy. He treats me wonderfully,is respectful, makes me laugh, and I love spending time withhim. Now I’m no longer inter-ested in meeting anyone else. But I am forcing myself to stickto “the plan.”

Darren is aware of this. Herespects my decision, but sayshe’ll convince me to choosehim. Am I making a mistakeby continuing to date others? Ihave real feelings for Dar-

ren and feel awkward aboutcontinuing with my plan. Ithink I should guard my heart.Perhaps dating others will helpme take things more slowly.Any thoughts? – CautiouslyOptimistic

Dear Optimistic: If you hadn’tmet someone as compatible asDarren, I would say full speedahead with your plan. But ifyou feel awkward going outwith others, then you shouldn’tbe doing it.

This is not to say youshould rush into anything withDarren. It takes time to reallyget to know someone. Take

the time because in the earlymonths of a relationship, bothparties are in the “selling”phase. You can always decideto go back to Plan A.

Dear Abby: My sister “Diane”lives across the country and isan active alcoholic. I have beensober for 13 years, with theexception of a relapse in 2012. Ihave an 11-year-old daughter.

In addition to the alcohol-ism, Diane is in an abusivemarriage. I have seen itfirsthand when I visited her.During each of these visits wehave argued, she and her hus-band have fought, and Dianahas drunk heavily.

I have decided to not exposemy daughter to my sister’sdrama. It was sad and stressfulfor me when I witnessed it.Diana is hurt and now refuses

to speak to me. Did I make theright decision? – Safe & Soberin Oakland

Dear Safe & Sober: I’m sorryyour sister is hurt, but as aparent, it’s up to you to decidewhat you want your impres-sionable daughter to see. That you don’t want her to beexposed to your alcohol-addledsister interacting with herabusive husband seems like asensible choice to me. Yes, youmade the right decision, andyou should stick with it.

Dear Abby: I recently starteddating a woman I have beenfriends with for a few years. She’s smart, funny, has manywonderful qualities, and I’mstarting to fall in love with her.

She’s attractive – except forone thing that could easily befixed. I don’t know if I’m being

shallow, so if that’s the case, please tell me. She has a bit of amustache.

Is there a way I can tactfullyask her to remove it with-out hurting her feelings? Orshould I just be grateful I foundsomeone who wants to be withme and keep quiet? – TactfullyChallenged

Dear Challenged: If you andthis lady have been friendsfor years, you should knoweach other well enough to levelwith each other. Because themustache is “distracting,” askher why she has never doneanything about it. However, ifshe opts to keep it, you’ll haveto love her just as she is.

• Write Dear Abby at www.dearabby.com or P.O. Box69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.
