Glossary
Assessment: Any systematic method of obtaining information from tests and other sources, used
to draw inferences about characteristics of people, objects, or programs; the process of gathering,
describing, or quantifying information about performance; an exercise-such as a written test,
portfolio, or experiment-that seeks to measure a student's skills or knowledge in a subject area.
Benchmark: A detailed description of a specific level of student performance expected of
students at particular ages, grades, or development levels. Benchmarks are often represented by
samples of student work. A set of benchmarks can be used as "checkpoints" to monitor progress
toward meeting performance goals within and across grade levels. Statement that provides a
description of student knowledge expected at specific grades, ages, or developmental levels.
Bias: A situation that occurs in testing when items systematically measure differently for
different ethnic, gender, or age groups. Test developers reduce bias by analyzing item data
separately for each group, then identifying and discarding items that appear to be biased.
Bloom's Taxonomy: An approach to ranking learning by the sophistication or depth of learning
required or accomplished.
Competency: A group of characteristics, native or acquired, which indicate an individual's ability
to acquire skills in a given area.
Criteria: Guidelines, rules, characteristics, or dimensions that are used to judge the quality of
student performance. Criteria indicate what we value in student responses, products or
performances. They may be holistic, analytic, general, or specific. Scoring rubrics are based on
criteria and define what the criteria mean and how they are used.
Evaluation: When used for most educational settings, evaluation means to measure, compare,
and judge the quality of student work, schools, or a specific educational program.
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 4
Fairness: Demonstrating impartial, unbiased, and equitable treatment of others. Taking turns,
sharing, and listening to what others have to say. The state of being fair, or free form spots or
stains, as of the skin; honesty, as of dealing; candor, as of an argument, etc.
Formative assessment: Assessment that provides feedback to the teacher for the purpose of
improving instruction.
Goal: Something that you hope to achieve in the future. The result or achievement toward which
effort is directed; aim; end. Description of intended results of learning stated in global, general
terms, e.g. clear communication, problem solving.
Learner-centered instruction: An instructional process in which the content is determined by the
student’s needs, the instructional materials are geared to the student’s abilities and the
instructional design makes the students active participants.
Measurable: able to be measured; perceptible or significant. Important or large enough to have
an effect.
Objective: Share objectives with students to allow them to help plan learning activities to help
them reach the objectives. Synonymous with outcomes. Statements that describe measurable
expectations of what students should be able to think, know or do when they've completed a
given educational program. The statements must be clear and easily understood by all faculties in
the area/department.
Realistic: interested in, concerned with, or based on what is real or practical. Practical and
sensible, or dealing with situations in this way.
Summative assessment: A culminating assessment, which gives information on students' mastery
of content, knowledge, or skills.
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 5
Taxonomy: is the science of classification according to a pre-determined system, with the
resulting catalog used to provide a conceptual framework for discussion, analysis, or information
retrieval. In practice, a good taxonomy should be simple, easy to remember, and easy to use.

Definiciones
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 8
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 9
relaciones, calificar semejanzas, etc.
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 10
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 11

Teacher I want to be.
The question is very interesting, but in something I am sure is that I want to be a teacher with
an opportunity to leave great memories en every child who enters in my class. I want to be a
teacher who always makes positive connection with all the students, been there to listen to their
needs and help them to enhance with the learning process.
Been educated as a teacher we have the opportunity to perceive the world in a different way and
be able to solve the student issues and situation from another point of view. A well and
capacitated or prepared teacher is competent to control the classroom and create a positive
environment.
Today teacher or educator most is ready to deal with modern technology using all the
strategies and tools abiable to be applied in the classrooms to help them to learn and achieve
knowledge. I want to be a teacher to who make students smile every day, greet them with
respect, listening to them and giving to them the space they need to grow up in a healthy
environment.
I want to be a teacher with all the basics needs it to guide them to a bright future. A teacher who
be responsible for the learning of the students and give them my best each and every day. I want
to be pleased with the profession I do. That is the teacher I want to be.

Glossary
Median: a value in an ordered set of values below and above which there is an equal number of
values or which is the arithmetic mean of the two middle values if there is no one middle
number.
Quartile: any of the three values that divide the items of a frequency distribution into four classes
with each containing one fourth of the total population; also: any one of the four classes.
Stanine: any of the nine classes into which a set of normalized standard scores arranged
according to rank in educational testing are divided, which include the bottom 4 percent and the
top 4 percent of the scores in the first and ninth classes and the middle 20 percent in the fifth, and
which have a standard deviation of 2 and a mean of 5.
Percentile Rank: For an application, the percent age of reviewed applications with priority scores
equal to or better than that particular application. An application is usually percentile based on all
the applications reviewed within its own study section in three consecutive meetings.
Grade Equivalent: This score represents the grade and month in school of students in the norm
group whose test performance is equivalent to the test performance of a given student. For
example, if a third-grade student obtains a grade equivalent of 4.8 on a mathematics test, it does
not mean that the student has mastered all the mathematics that is taught in the school district
during the first eight months of Grade 4. It means only that the student’s performance on this test
is theoretically equivalent to the typical performance of students in the norm group who have
completed eight months of Grade 4.

Taiwan, United State and Japan Education Comparisons
When it comes to standardized testing in the U.S. educational system, there are two kinds
with two very different objectives. One system is the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which
requires all public schools to administer standardized testing in order to ensure that they are
meeting state standards The students are measured annually in reading and math from third
through eighth grade and at least one during high school .However, these tests do not prevent
them from advancing to the next grade or to a particular school; it is rather used to indicate if a
school has been improving or not, and thus whether to determine if government intervention is
needed.
The other type of standardized testing in the country applies only to students planning to
attend a postsecondary education. Most commonly taken during high school, students are
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 24
required to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Testing
(ACT) in order to quality for most universities.
Unlike standardized testing in the U.S., standardized testing in Taiwan has much greater
consequences for students. In Taiwan, junior high school students start to prepare for the most
important goal during this period: to score high enough on the national senior high school
entrance exams at the end of the 8th grade, so that they can attend one of the most prestigious
senior high schools in the country Junior high students often stay in school as late as 8 or 9 P.M.
for supplementary instructions for this test .After getting into a senior high school, the main goal
of Taiwanese students is to then score well enough on the national university entrance exams, in
order to attend a four-year university in Taiwan If they do not pass, then they cannot apply to any
of those schools .
Studies have shown that high-stakes testing on students can have both positive and negative
effects. Some of the positive effects include providing students with clearer information about
their own knowledge and skills, motivating students to work harder, sending clearer signals to
students about what to study, and helping them associate and align personal effort with rewards
(Sloane & Kelly, 2003). On the contrary, some of the negative effects of high-stakes testing
include frustrating students and discouraging them from trying, making the environment more
competitive and causing students to devalue grades and school assessments (Sloane & Kelly,
2003). It also has been proposed that achievement tests have detrimental effects on young
children’s development (Sloane & Kelly, 2003).
Organizations have made several conclusions about standardized testing, such as that it
increases pressure and stress on children, setting them up for failure, lowered self-esteem and
potential health risks (Haladyna, Haas, & Allison, 1998). It can also compel teachers to spend
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 25
valuable time preparing children to take tests as well as limiting the children’s education
possibilities, resulting in a mediocre curriculum and learning (Haladyna & et al., 1998). In
addition, standardized testing discourages social intellectual development, such as cooperation,
creativity, and problem-solving skills, and it can lead to harmful tracking and labeling of
children, especially those of minority and low socioeconomic status (Haladyna & et al.)
According to these studies, Taiwanese students may be more level to these abovementioned
effects because their educational system has more emphasis on standardized tests. I believe that
Taiwanese students have a lot more pressure on them when it comes to academic achievement;
the society stresses the importance of education, and these standardized tests are extremely
challenging to pass.
Furthermore, there are many cost-benefits to standardized testing. Taiwan’s testing system
might explain why classrooms there adhere to solely academic instruction. Like one of the
literatures claims, a negative aspect of having standardized testing is that teachers are forced to
follow a strict curriculum to help the students succeed on the tests, and therefore, they have little
flexibility in their instruction. Having collaboration or other kinds of activities that can help
develop social skills for young children are usually not emphasized in Taiwan.
Taiwanese people who were incredibly intelligent and have amazing credentials on paper,
but they were not doing nearly as well in life because they often lacked social skills. Therefore,
while high-stakes tests may be a positive effect on academic achievement, it might not be
beneficial in other areas, such as social development.
As noted in one of the studies above, some of the negative effects that high-stakes testing
can have on children include having extreme stress and a lower self-esteem. The suicide rate
among Taiwanese students is high and comparable to their Japanese counterparts, whom also
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 26
share similar rigorous standardized testing system .Therefore, in extreme cases, having such high
academic expectations can be detrimental as they can drive students to the point of depression
and even death. Perhaps this is where schools and families should intervene in order to ensure
that the stress does not reach to a dangerous level.
Although students in the U.S. might not be as affected with the negative effects of
standardized testing, America does pay a price for this trade-off. Despite being one of the
richest, most influential countries in the world, American students have rarely scored high
compared to other nations. For example, on a mathematics tests for 13-year-olds, U.S. students
on the whole ranked 14th while Taiwan ranked in the top two, with average scores more than 20
points higher than in the U.S. (Bushweller, 1996). Furthermore, the U.S. also spends close to the
world-class average on education (Haynes & Chalker, 1997). Therefore, although they do not
strongly emphasize the importance of high-stakes tests like Taiwan, not stressing them can also
lead to negative implications.
Taiwan and the U.S. certainly have differing views on how important and necessary
standardized tests are, and we can see that each of their educational systems produces different
results. U.S. students tend to study a significantly less amount of time and seem to have less
stress than their Taiwanese counterparts do; perhaps this is due to less high-stakes testing. In
addition, Taiwanese students seem to be much more motivated and hardworking than their
American peers, which might have resulted from having to prepare for many standardized tests.
Perhaps the reasons behind these differences in standardized testing root from differing cultural
values regarding academics. Although both countries greatly contrast from each other, in the end,
each of their systems have both positive and negative consequences, thus balancing out these
different approaches to standardized testing.

Como educadora que soy elegí este texto “What I learned from my students ‘ porque pienso y
Running head: E-PORTFOLIO EDUC 355 29
Aprendí a
