ME 191/291: Engineering Drawing & Computer Graphics
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1 Draw and understand plane scales and diagonal scales
2 Draw regular polygons and different engineering curves
3 Understand the principle of orthogonal projection and solve problems on projections of lines
and laminas
4 Solve problems on projection of regular solids in different positions and draw their sectional
views and true shape of the section
5 Develop the lateral surfaces of regular solids and draw isometric view of solids
6 Understand the basics of computer graphics and draw 2D figures using AutoCAD
ME 192/292: Workshop practice
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1 Have a working knowledge of various types of bench works using suitable tools and
techniques for fitting operations.
2 Understand different types of welding operations and their different aspects & controls
including the use of AC Transformer and its power control technique.
3 Understand the basic principles of Tin-smithy operation and its use.
4 Specify and practice various machining operations using different machine tools through
hands on training.
5 Gain insight into the techniques of different product operations in manufacturing.
ME 391: Machine drawing I
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1 Draw and identify welding symbols, represent and identify welded joints on drawings by
means of these symbols.
2 Draw and identify schematic product symbols for standard components in electrical and
electronic systems, draw and identify symbols for pipe joints and fittings and prepare piping
layouts.
3 Construct isometric views of simple machine parts from orthographic projections and vice
versa.
4 Draw and understand different sectional views - full, half, broken, revolved, removed and
auxiliary sections of machine parts and understand sectioning conventions.
5 Identify different forms of screw threads, draw nut-bolts and riveted joints.
6 Draw and understand symbols of limits, tolerances & fits and represent them on drawing.
7 Draw and understand assembly and part drawings of a mechanical assembly, such as screw
jack, pipe vice etc.
ME 392: Workshop Practice-II
After taking the course the student will able to
1. Manufacture a component by various machining operations by engine lathe, Drilling
machine, Shaping machine
2. Join two metals sheets using resistance spot welding, Manual metal Arc welding
3. Make a pattern using different wood working operations
4. Make green sand mould with gating system
5. Practice different operations of forging like upsetting and drawing down.
ME 393: Applied Mechanics Lab
After taking the course the student will able to
1. Understand and determination of spring stiffness under tension and compressive loads
2. Understand and determination of Strain gauge based deflection measurement of a cantilever
beam
3. Understand and determination of Tension Test and Compression Test of ductile and brittle
materials: stress-strain diagram, yield strength, ultimate strength, modulus of elasticity,
percentage elongation and percentage reduction in areas, observation of fractured surfaces
4. Understand and determination torsional rigidity by Torsion Test
5. Understand and determination of Hardness of a given specimen by Brinel/ Vickers and
Rockwell hardness tests, Shore hardness test
6. Understand and determination of coefficient of friction using different surface contact.
ME 491: Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics Lab
After taking this course the students will be able to:
1. Use different flow & velocity measuring instruments like venturimeter, orificemeter, pitot
tube etc.
2. Use the Bernoulli’s equation to solve problems in fluid mechanics.
3. Use the concept of metacenter and metacentric height in the field of design of vessels, ships
etc.
4. Understand the type of flow of a flowing fluid and also measure the losses during flow
through the pipes.
5. Understand the constructional features, operating principle, design criteria for selection of
different hydraulic machines such as turbines, pumps etc.
ME 492: Manufacturing Technology Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to
1. Find Grain Fineness Number of sand
2. Prepare moulding sand by proper mixing of silica sand with its various ingredients and also to
prepare compacted standard samples from this green sand for checking important physical
properties of foundry sand
3. Determine Permeability Number, Hardness, moisture content of moulding sand
4. Cast a component as per given drawing by using a green sand mould prepared accordingly
using a given pattern made according to the size of the component
5. Manufacture a octagonal chisel as per given drawing by using different forging operations
ME 493: Material Testing Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1. Understand and determination of Impact strength of a given specimen by different impact
tests procedure, viz., Charpy and Izod tests;
2. Understand and determination of drawability of the given sheet metals through cupping
test
3. Understand the process of performing Fatigue test of a typical sample and obtain
load-life plot.
4. Understand the process of sample preparation and etching of ferrous and non-ferrous
metals and alloys for metallographic observation
5. Observe and understand, the changes in hardness and microstructure on heat
treatment of carbon steels under different rates of cooling including quenching, by
performing hardness test and metallographic studies;
6. Observe and understand different non-destructive techniques to find out the presence
of surface/ sub-surface cracks, adopting dye penetration (DP) test, magnaflux test,
ultrasonic or eddy current test.
ME 494: Machine Drawing-II
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1 draw and understand assembly and part drawings of a mechanical assembly, such as a lathe
tail-stock, tool head of a shaping machine etc.
2 use the basic tools of the draw toolbar, modify toolbar and dimensioning through GUI and
commands to draw simple 2D drawings using AutoCAD 2011
3 draw sections and developments of lateral surfaces of simple solids using the knowledge of
basic 2D drawing in AutoCAD 2011
4 use the basic tools of 3D modeling to draw simple 3D solids using AutoCAD 2011 and apply
simple 3D operations on them
5 make 3D models of simple machine parts using the knowledge of basic 3D modeling and 3D
operations in AutoCAD 2011
ME 592: Applied Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to
1. Understand the Fourier’s law of conduction and determine the conduction through metal bar.
2. Understand the significance of insulating powder and determine its conductivity.
3. Understand the Newton Rikhman Law of cooling and determination of effectiveness of a
circular fin which has an insulated tip.
4. Understand the Radiation phenomena and determine the emissivity of a grey body.
5. Determine the effectiveness of a heat exchanger both parallel and counter flow and its
significance.
6. Determine the Dryness factor by using throttling and separating calorimeter.
7. Determine the volumetric efficiency of a single acting reciprocating compressor.
ME 593: Design Practice-I
After taking this course the student will be able to
1 Design and drawing of Knuckle/Cotter joint
2 Design and drawing of Bolted bracket/ turn buckle
3 Design and drawing of Screw jack
4 Design and drawing of Riveted joints
5 Design and drawing of Welded joints
6 Design and drawing of Shaft Couplings
7 Design and drawing of Belt pulley drive

ME 594: Metrology & Measurement Lab
After taking this course the students will be able to:
1. Select linear measuring instrument for measurement of various components.
2. Select angular and taper measurement devices for measurement of various components.
3. Evaluate quality of surface produced using various methods.
4. Discriminate between various screws and gears by comparing their dimensions.
5. Select appropriate temperature measuring device for various applications.
6. Describe basic concepts of mechanical measurement and errors in measurements.
ME 691: Machining & Machine Tools Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1. understand the process of measurement of cutting forces (Pz and Px or Py ) as well as
the effect of different machining parameters in straight turning
2. Understand the process of measurement and effects of different machining parameters
on average cutting temperature and surface roughness during turning
3. Study of chip formation (type, color & thickness) in turning mild steel and evaluation
of role of variation of cutting velocity and feed on chip reduction coefficient /cutting
ratio and shear angle.
4. Measure the tool–wear and evaluate the tool life in turning mild steel by HSS or
carbide tool
5. Understand the process and importance, of performing Geometrical and kinematic
test of a centre lathe or a drilling machine
6. Understand the process of manufacturing of a cast iron “V” – block by machining
and a straight toothed spur gear from a cast or forged disc
ME 692: IC Engine Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to
1. Understand the process of the determination of calorific value of a fuel by using Bomb
calorimeter and types of calorific value.
2. Understand the necessity and drawing procedure of valve timing diagram of Diesel Engine.
3. Understand the uses of eddy current dynamometer for the performance Test of an I.C.
4. Understanding of FHP, BHP and IHP of a multi-cylinder Petrol Engine by Morse method.
5. Understand the use of catalytic converters and its effect on flue gas of an I.C. Engine.
6. Understand the principle of operation of MPFI (multipoint fuel injection system).
ME 693: Design Practice-II
After taking this course the student will be able to
1 modeling of 2-D and 3-D mechanical components and systems using software packages like
AUTOCAD, CATIA, PRO E or similar software
2 design analysis of mechanical components using software packages like CATIA, PRO E or
similar software
3 Design Practice using codes, e.g., Pressure vessel codes, Gear design codes
4 Select the mechanical components from manufacturers’ catalogue, e.g., chain drive, rolling
element bearings etc
ME 694: Dynamics of Machines Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1 Gain insight into the working of a cam–follower mechanism, draw follower displacement
diagram and determine jump speed.
2 Understand the working of a simple gyroscope and measure its rotational motions and
torques.
3 Measure the natural frequency of free vibration of different single DOF vibratory systems and
determine related physical quantities from these.
4 Operate centrifugal governors like Proell governor and Hartnell governor and determine their
operational characteristics.
5 Balance statically and dynamically unbalanced systems consisting of several unbalanced
rotating masses
ME 695: Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1. Understand the working principle of Domestic Refrigeration System.
2. Learn the Coefficient of Performance of Simple Vapor Compression Refrigeration System.
3. Understand the working principle of Thermo-electric Refrigeration System and find out its
COP.
4. Understand the Psychrometric Processes.
5. Calculate the load of an Air-conditioning unit and its bypass factor.
ME 791: Advanced Manufacturing Lab
After taking this course the student will be able to:
1. Understand the working principle, mechanism of material removal, process
influencing factors, and uses of Abrasive Jet Machining
2. Understand the working principle, mechanism of material removal, process
influencing factors, and uses of Ultrasonic Machining
