WELCOME TO THE MED-HEALTH PROJECT

Dear reader,

Welcome to the third newsletter from the MED-HEALTH project!

MED-HEALTH is a 3-year project that started on the 15th October, 2015

and is co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European

Union. It is coordinated by An-Najah National University (ANU) with 12

Partners from Palestine, Jordan, Tunisia and European countries.

The project aims at building up South Mediterranean HEIs’ competences in

the field of Public Health to improve public health performance, employment

& development perspectives in the region.

The main aim of the project will be achieved through Introducing a Master

Degree Programme in Public Health Management in line with Bologna

requirements and with a holistic and regional approach in South

Mediterranean universities to prepare highly skilled and competent public

health workforce; Establishing an e Portal on Public Health Management in

TUNISIA REGIONAL WORKSHOP

Venue: University of Monastir, Tunisia

Date: 20th – 22th Sep 2017

The workshop focused on supervising development of syllabus and practical issues, incl.

Examination and teaching methods, graduates’ employability and competence matching,

the main aim of the workshop was to help Mediterranean Partners Universities to develop

the teaching materials for the following core courses: Strategic Management and

Commissioning, Contextual factors & Health information systems, and Health Economics

and Financing.

On the first day the partner universities presented the Master Programme development and

progress in each country “Jordan, Tunisia, Palestine”.

Then there were working group’s session to discuss the following core courses: Strategic

Management and Commissioning, Contextual factors and Health information systems,

Health Economics and Financing.

On the second day the EU partner’s trainers presented and gave training to the MED

partners for the three core courses: Health Systems: finance and future – Prof. Pérez

Ciordia , Health Economics and Financing. Dr. Russell Kabir , Strategic Management and

Commissioning – Experiences from an international MSc in Public Health’ Dr.Fiona

McMaster.

Then the MED partners formed working groups to summarize the final common outputs

for the three core course and presented them to all.

The partners agreed on courses competences, evaluation and requirements procedure,

weekly class schedule, recommended literature,….etc. please see courses syllabus in the

annexes below.

On the Third day there were a project management meeting, the financial status of project,

next steps, requirements and semi-annual reporting to project coordinator.

Then Health Management Network – Progress, Set-up & IT maintenance of e-Portal on

PHM – Progress, Selection & uploading of materials were presented and discussed.

Exploring options for joint Master degree EU-PCs, Development of Dissemination Strategy

– Project Promotion, Purchase & installation of equipment Status also then presented and

discussed.

At the end of the meeting, there were a closing remarks by Dr Mahjoub and the consortium

agreed on the next activities and date of the next study visit in May 2018 to ARU – United

Kingdom.

MED-HEALTH ANNU MNO Visit

On 9th April 2017, An-Najah National University, coordinator of the

Erasmus + project MED-HEALTH ” Mediterranean Public Health

Alliances”561748-EPP-1-2015-1-JO-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP, hosted the

National Erasmus+ Office project monitoring visit in Palestine. The office

director, Dr. Nidal JAYYOUSI, and Ms. Rana A. QAIMARI and Ms Aya

FUQHA, the NEO programme officers in Palestine, was the visiting team.

The event was attended by representatives of local partners.

The visit was preceded by a meeting with Dr. Mohammed Alamleh, the

Vice President for Academic Affairs to strengthen the university

participation in Erasmus+ projects in general and jean Monnet in

particular.

The visit mainly aimed at looking at the outputs and achievements of the

operational objectives of the project in Palestine to‐ date, to assess

progress and achievements of the project, to judge whether the project is

producing the expected results, and to evaluate its visibility and

sustainability potential, and at drawing out the reality of the project

environment regarding how it is being implemented and the difficulties

faced.

The main monitoring session was attended by all guests, during which, the

project coordinator Dr.IMAD IBRIK gave a short overview on the work

plan implementation and the achieved results so far. He presented the

current status of the different work packages, where they showed that the

work is going on properly and many of the project deliverables have

already been satisfyingly completed. After the presentations, an open and

constructive discussion has considered project phase one.

Dr.Nidal also emphasized the need to have a spirit of partnership between

all parties for the success of the project, he also thanked the Project

coordinator for Project success, and the active communication among

partners, and the great achievements of the project.

The meeting ended with a visit summary and some recommendations.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHED ACTIVITIES

Development of master programme

teaching materials

The teaching materials for the six core courses for the

master programme in PHM were developed in MED

partner universities with a regional dimension and

in line with the requirements of the Bologna

process, its adaptation to the 6 PCUs’ needs and

implementation . The six core courses are: Essential

Issues in Public Health Policy, Strategic Management

and Commissioning, Health Services Management,

Health, Culture and Society, Contextual factors and

Health information systems, and Health Economics

and Financing.

Purchase and installation of

equipment’s

The MED partner universities prepared tenders

and purchased and working on installing the

equipment’s for the Master Programme in “Public

Health Management”

Set-up & IT maintenance of ePortal on

PHM

The ePortal on PHM was set up. And it is ready in its basic

structure, PCUs teaching staff selected, with the support of

the EU partners and the other participants in the project

the materials that will constitute the reference content for

the ePortal users, and working on feeding the portal.

Master Programme Accreditation

The MED partner universities had the accreditation for the

Master Programme in “Public Health Management” and

lectures started from the beginning of the academic year

2017 in some universities and it will be started on the

second semesters for the others.

MAJOR PLANNED ACTIVITIES

Students Internships

By the end of the 3rd year of the project,

the Master students will complement their

education with 3 to 6 months practical

training in NGOs, and other selected health

institutions, firms, governmental organisations,

research and academic organisations in their

countries. This will give them a necessary

insight into the practice and the needs of

stakeholders in the region as a manner to

get them ready for their professional

activities. Students’ will be selected for internships; and

then starting Implementation of student internships in

national PH entities (private/public sector).

Exploring options for joint Master

degree EU-PCs

Establishing a joint Master degree on PHM

at the regional level. This action will require

recognition and approval by the relevant

University bodies, which have shown

preliminary interest during the proposal phase

of the project. And exploring options for joint

Master degree EU-PCs.

Preparation & Implementation of

Final Conference

Organising an International Conference in

Public Health – Policies and Good Practices

for the Mediterranean Region.

At the end of the project an International

Conference will be held in Amman, as a

platform to promote the project region-wide

with the aim to encourage further policy

dialogue and reform. Full media coverage

will maximise the event visibility.

Implementation and Launching of the

Regional Network in PHM

Creating a Regional Health Management

Network, which will represent a platform

for exchange of experiences, information and

good practices with a view to fostering a

regular dialogue & coaching among

practitioners and actors in the field at the

regional level. The Network will be launched

by PM36, after careful planning of its

mission and objectives, and taking

dissemination measures for its adequate

impact.

Upcoming Meetings and Events

Guest lectures at the South Mediterranean

partner HEIs

The lectures aims to provide master students as well as

professionals with insight into the field of Public Health

Management and an appreciation of the significant role of

Public Health in furthering the health ,economic and

technological development, and particularly in promoting

and protecting the health of people and the communities

where they live, learn, work and play. The guest lectures

will be as teaching support by the EU partners within the

different modules of the Master Programme and that will

assure the international orientation of the master course.

Three guest lectures will be implemented in Tunisia,

Jordan and Palestine starting from Feb 2018.

UK Study Visit

The Fifth steering committee meeting will take place in

Cambridge – UK, May, 2018. The meeting will be held to

discuss and follow-up the project deliverables. Also

Master developers will be introduced into the basic

requirements of the development of new study

programme in line with Bologna requirements in ARU,

UK. The participants will be introduced into different

aspects of curricula development in Anglia Ruskin

University incl. ECTS allocation and implementation;

learning objectives; modularisation; students’ mobility

and recognition of degrees & qualifications; procedures

for establishment of joint degree programmes. A special

session will be devoted to discuss the operational

arrangements and financial issues.
