FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Singin’ in the Rain comes alive with the WSO, March 1315 Winnipeg, MB – March 4, 2015 – It’s a night at the movies with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) and the greatest movie musical of all time! The WSO presents Gene Kelly’s classic Singin’ in the Rain on the big screen with the WSO performing live the original MGM score underneath March 1315 at Centennial Concert Hall. Patricia Ward Kelly, biographer and widow of Gene Kelly hosts the evening. Starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, Singin’ in the Rain sees three stars caught up in the transition from silent films to “talkies” in Hollywood in late 1920’s. The film was released in 1952 at the height of musical film popularity and was nominated for Best Original Music Score at the 25 th Academy Awards. Comedy, romance, incredible dance scenes, and unforgettable songs, it’s “The Show You will Never Forget!” Gene Kelly was a true maven, innovator, and Hollywood movie star. He did it all from dancing, acting, singing, directing, producing and choreographing. In addition to being the star of Singin’ in the Rain, he codirected and choreographed the iconic dance numbers still cherished today. Gene was recognized for his many career achievements with an Honorary Academy Award. Other honours include lifetime achievement awards from the Kennedy Center Honors (1982), the Screen Actors Guild and American Film Institute. Audiences are growing rapidly for the WSO’s film with live orchestra shows. These presentations create an immediacy and presence that audiences miss at the theatre. In addition, the concerts revive classic films from the repertoire that are difficult to find in today’s theatres. Singin’ in the Rain will be a perfect example of why these performances are so popular. Patricia Ward Kelly met Gene Kelly at the Smithsonian in 1985 when she was a writer on a show Gene was hosting. Soon after, he invited her to California to write his memoirs, a job for which she recorded his words nearly every day for over ten years. They were together until his death in 1996. The WSO is thrilled to welcome Patricia as she greets audiences and shares intimate stories of her late husband’s life and his perspective on the innovative work for which he wished to be remembered. Patricia will answer audience questions following each performance. Film Credits CAST Gene Kelly Don Lockwood Donald O’Connor Cosmo Brown
