MEDIA STUDIES A2Types of music video!

PERFORMANCE

A performance music video is a video that purely focuses on the artist or band and maybe an audience that they are performing to. They normally have a wide range of shots in order to view the stage differently. These types of music videos are common among bands (rock) or artists with a major fan base.Examples Passenger – Let her go Bon Jovi – Livin on a prayer Green Day – American Idiot

EVALUATION - PERFORMANCEIn Passengers ‘let her go’, the director has used a very slight filter as well as taking advantage of the lights on stage to make the video much more intimate than other performance video and also to fit in with the genre of music passenger is performing. They use many different shots such as close up’s of the hands touching instruments and medium shots of passenger on his own as it is his video. This makes the video very effective as it is uncommon to see a singer/songwriter such as passenger using video techniques such as this, but it also portrays the intimate nature of the video perfectly.

NARRATIVE

A narrative video is something with a storyline behind it that the artist wants to portray in their music and is showing the audience what the story is while singing.ExamplesTaylor Swift – The best day Ed Sheeran – PhotographBritney Spears – Every time

EVALUATION – NARRATIVE

In Taylor Swifts video ‘The best day’ she has decided to use old home videos to show her past and her family, this shows her audience a true storyline of singing about her mother and family. This is very effective as home videos can be very intimate and present something's that professionally made videos might not be able to.

CONCEPT

A music video that has a concept is something that is very obscure however has one objective focus. These types of music video’s are meant to grasp the audiences focus.

Examples Slim Shady – Eminem Panic! At the disco – I write sins not tragedies Coldplay- Lovers in Japan

EVALUATION – CONCEPT The concept of Coldplay's video is be odd, to keep

the audiences attention as well as it being in keeping with the song and Japanese culture. It also shows the band in many places helping the audience keep in touch with the band and not making it too odd. This is all very effective because it is not too odd to an extent where it would shock Coldplay fans however just controversial enough to keep in touch with the madness of the song ie spinning Chris Martin with the use of a green screen and a very strange back ground

5 KEY QUALITIES

1. Keep in touch with the audience for example if it was an artist or band with a huge fan base, keep it key to something related with the band.

2. Make the video genuine to the song

3. Make sure the audience know what the artist is signing about – it’s all about capturing the song well so people may be able to identify

4. Make it interesting – if it is a slow song make sure that something it going on because if it’s not then the audience are not going to feel engaged

5. Use a range of lighting, camera angles this then keeps everything interesting and gives everyone a different point of veiw.

TYPES OF REPRESENTATION IN MUSIC VIDEOS Gender Gender is normally divided into the different genres of music ie rap (talks about women being ‘bitches’ and in the modern day looking at boobs and mainly large bottoms. This is viewed as being soft core porn for men and can link to Laura Mulveys theory of the male gaze. Age and Class

Pop demonstrates age and class very well as the stereotypical young white girl with the stunning beauty. This could come across as a very bad thing as many of these singers are idolised and therefor young girls would want to copy them. Ethnicity

Ethnicity is also normally very common to such genres like Rap and Reggae as it is mostly black people that are shown. This is because of the stereotype of ‘the street’ Region place

Places around the world make their own music such as India and Middle eastern music. This is normally shown in music videos as very cultural and follows a religion.
