Q1: What is your age? After reviewing the survey results it was made clear that 93% of people were 16 years old and 7% were 17 years old. This helps me to identify the age range of our audience. This is useful as it enables me to identify a possible age rating for the thriller film. As the majority vote for age was 16, it is possible that the thriller film will have a 15 age rating as it is possible that there may be explicit violence and clear reference to murder and some very intense scence which could be disturbing for younger viewrs in the sequence. this still allows us to appeal to a wider range of people

Q2: What is your sex?

I found out from this question on our survey that 80% of our participants were male and 20% percent were female. There is evidently a large gap in difference of the amount of people for each sex and this indicates that we must ensure that our thriller film is directed at and appeals to our predominantly male audience however, if we are to appeal to a larger audience we must also apply conventions that appeal to both males and females for a successful opening sequence.

Q3: What of these sub-genres of thriller most appeals to you?

Our audience fed back that Action and Psychological thrillers were the most popular sub genres with action gaining 33% and psychological 27%. The answers to this question are especially essential as it helps me narrow down what our target audience find to be the best sub genre of thriller and what they do not find so appealing. Which is important as it is vital that the thriller film appeals to its audience to be successful. From these results it is clear that both action and psychological will need to be involved in the production of this opening sequence.

Q4: What would you like to see in a thriller opening sequence?

This question was an open question and it was useful as it gave an insight into individuals ideas that the audience might have had and it helped to add a sense of individuality to the survey.

Q4: What would you like to see in a thriller opening sequence? (continued)

After reviewing these answers, it is easy to see what different participants f our survey are interested in. Some of the suggestions may not be put to action however it would be a good idea to at least make an attempt in incorporating individuals ideas from our audience.

Q5: What do you find builds the most tension in a thriller?

The data from this question tells me that the audience that that creepy music is what builds the most tension with 18% in a thriller with things such as no music, lighting and camera all coming second at 13% which suggests that the audience feels that these also contribute to what builds tension in a thriller.

An important convention of the thriller genre is for a thriller film to build tension so these results highlight what must be incorporated into the scene to best engage the audience and essentially appeal to them.

Q6: What do you think is the most important element within a thriller film?

From the data received from this question the target audience wanted to specifically see the elements of suspense and a plot twist with the majority voting for it to be joint 1st, both acquiring 40%. This shows that we must use these elements in our opening sequence

Q7: What do you feel is the most important element within a thriller?

From analysing this data it was evident that setting was the most important element within a thriller shown by the 40% of our audience who voted so. This is significant as it allows me to begin thinking about what type of setting would most appeal to the audience which fits with the audiences choice of action and/or psychological thriller as the sub genre. This helps me narrow down to exactly what the audience expect from the opening sequence, ensuring that it meets the standard conventions and is appealing to a large portion, if not all, of our target audience.

Q8: What do you think would be the most effective way to open a thriller?

This question was extremely helpful in the research process as it clearly indicates what our target audience feel is the most effective way to open a thriller. This essentially gives us the foundation for the thriller opening sequence before production has even begun as the audience have made it clear of what they would like to see. This means that our opening sequence will almost definitely open with a seemingly normal opening, showing everyday life as this one the majority vote of 40%. This creates tension as it deceives the audience as they will think that something is not quite right and they will not know what to expect.

Q9: How much of the plot do you think should be revealed in the opening of a thriller?

From the data the vote was unanimous (100% vote) for as liitle of the plot as possible to be revealed during the opening sequence of the thriller opening sequence. This is helpful as it is now clear that the enigma of the thriller is what the audience finds most appealing. This is also quite straightforward in the sense that it is something that can be effectively put to action with enough planning.

Q10: What makes a thriller appeal to you?

From the results of this question I can see that the participants of the survey found that plots where what they found made a thriller most appeal to them. This is also a convention of the genre so therefore it is essential that this will be included in the thriller opening sequence. Plot twists are also a good way to capitalise on built up tension which could be key in our thriller film
