American Heart Month celebrations continued last week with
Medic’s Latino Community Outreach Committee. Paramedic
Adamo Riascos and EMT Lester Oliva spoke about the meaning
and importance of heart month on a local Spanish-language radio
station. Callers were interested to learn they were more at risk
for heart disease than they thought and that changing their daily
lifestyle habits can easily decrease their risk of heart disease.
Medic’s Lucky Hearts Campaign has also been asked to participate in a community heart health fair hosted by CMC-
University. “… And The Beat Goes On” community heart health fair will offer free heart health screenings, interactive
exhibits and giveaways to participants at Northlake Mall. The Lucky Hearts Campaign will be there to educate the community
about the importance of bystander intervention and knowing CPR and AED use. “… And The Beat Goes On is free, open
to the community and will be held next Saturday, February 18th from 11:00 am—3:00 pm.
Hope to see you there!

The work of three Medic field employees was celebrated
last week with two separate patient reunions.
On Monday, February 6th, Paramedic John Fisher was reunited
with Tom McCann. Mr. McCann suffered a heart attack and
collapsed while speaking with his daughter’s driver’s education
instructor outside Providence High School in August 2010. That
instructor, John Potts, initiated CPR. That action likely saved Mr.
McCann’s life.
Once the Medic crew arrived on scene, Code Cool was initiated,
and Mr. McCann was rushed to the cath lab at CMC Main.
During the reunion, Mr. Potts was given a Lucky Hearts award for
his bystander intervention. And then Fisher went one step
further, by taking off his ROSC pin, and giving it to Mr. Potts,
to honor his heroic efforts.
Fisher says he knew that day Mr. McCann would survive,
and that’s exactly what he told his family. Mr. McCann, a husband and father of five children, reports he has made a full
recovery and says he knows it is because of the actions of Mr. Potts and the Medic crew. Look for local media coverage of
the reunion coming soon on our online media gallery: http://www.medic911.com/extranet/video_gallery_news.
Medic Celebrates Two Patient Reunions
Medic Paramedic John Fisher (R) speaks to Charlotte media about the meaning and
importance of his ROSC pin. He was reunited with patient Tom McCann (L) and
bystander John Potts (Center) on Monday, February 6th as a part of celebrations for
American Heart Month.
Patient Reunion Number Two
On Tuesday, February 7th, Paramedic Kim Marlowe and EMT
Renee Canup had an emotional reunion with a patient. James
McLaurin and his family were brought to Medic to speak to a
group of regional EMS Agencies and representatives from both
hospital systems during a meeting about the National Cares
Registry and community response to bystander CPR. Marlowe
and Canup were asked to attend for a patient reunion,
however Mr. McLaurin and his family had no idea the reunion
was going to take place. It was a great, and tearful, surprise to
them when Marlowe and Canup were introduced.
Mr. McLaurin collapsed in August 2010 while mowing his lawn.
He managed to crawl into his home where his wife found him.
The call was a very challenging one and a positive outcome
was questionable.
Marlowe says she had just finished Focused Cardiac Arrest
training, and says that made a big difference in the save. She says it taught her to stay on the chest as much as possible, and
she says she did that, and didn’t give up.
The family said the Medic crew was the missing piece to the puzzle they were working to complete from that day, and they
were thankful for the reunion.
Medic EMT Renee Canup (L) and Paramedic Kim Marlowe (R) surprised patient James
McLaurin and his family during a conference Tuesday at Post 100. The grateful family
said in this case, the chain of survival worked perfectly, from start to finish.

7th Annual Salute to Heroes Game
Let’s keep up the GREAT work!
As we closeout the FINAL month of the current
tracking period, all Medic employees are encouraged to
be mindful of the following key points:
The group performance pay program is heavily
tied to overall patient satisfaction.
Teamwork Between EMS Personnel is
the #1 driver of overall patient
satisfaction
Regardless of the type of medical concern a
patient we treat is dealing with, they still judge
the level of service they receive and they very
well may end up on the other end of one of our
patient satisfaction surveys.
Use AIDET on every call
Treat your partner and the other first responders on scene with the same level of respect and teamwork – it does
matter
Be mindful of what you say and how you react to everyone in the room
Your actions in the coming weeks can positively or negatively influence the final results of this current tracking period.
Thank you to everyone for your hard work and let’s continue to stay focused. Great job!
