On January 1st we began delivery of EMS coverage in the Charlotte airport
terminal. Here are the details:
Two crews will work at the airport each day. The first crew will be identified as
MEDIC 721 and will work 06:00 – 18:00; the second crew will be MEDIC 722 and will
work 10:00 – 22:00. Airport Police will continue to provide EMS coverage from 22:00 – 06:00 or anytime our units are unavailable to respond to an incident.
All operations for EMS at the airport will be conducted on channel MEC-OPS-13. All units coming to the airport to
transport a patient will be assigned to this channel when 721 and/or 722 are on duty. Airport Operations will monitor this channel and will be identified as “Airport Control” or “Airport Operations”.
While MEDIC crews are on duty all incidents at the airport terminal area will be dispatched as 5501 Josh Birmingham
Parkway. Units coming to transport will need to ensure they understand where they are responding. The 4416 Rental Car
Road address will not be utilized when a transport unit is needed to respond onto the ramp under escort from Airport Operations.
When transport units respond to the upper level, airport crews will normally move the patient out to the public area and
meet the transport unit just inside the A, B, C, or D doors. A “stretcher swap” can occur.
Unless requested by an airport unit, transport units will only be dispatched as part of the initial call assignment for Delta and
Echo level responses.
Units will be requested to stage at 4200 Rental Car Road across from the exit for the cell phone lot (a vacant rental car
lot). The airport unit or CMED will advise the ambulance when and where to meet for patient transfer.
Please contact Supervisor of Emergency Preparedness & Special Operations, Michael Stanford at ext. 6230 or via e-mail at
[email protected] if you have any questions about the latest Airport Coverage Update.

In the coming months, CMC will be instituting a
new algorithm called “Code Rupture.” This algorithm
pertains to patients Medic may transfer from
outlying facilities that are experiencing a leaking or
ruptured aortic aneurysm (AAA). The changes for
us involves the disposition of these patients on
arrival at CMC.
The procedure is as follows:
1. Crew will be notified at sending facility of
“Code Rupture”.
2. Patient will be managed as needed by the
attending crew.
3. On early encode to CMC, please make
them aware as to the patient’s hemo-
dynamic status.
If the patient is
hemodynamically stable (BP > 80) the patient will be delivered to the ED as usual.
If the patient is hypotensive (BP <80 for >10 mins.), you will be escorted to the OR by
security or someone from the ED.
4. Manage the airway via BVM/OPA only. DO NOT place ANY other airway adjunct.
5. If the patient arrests in transit then “Code Rupture” is cancelled and the patient is treated per Signal 9 protocol.
Code Rupture

The months of December—February often bring some of most inclement weather
conditions to our area. As we continue operations through the cold weather, please be
mindful of Medic’s Inclement Weather Policy below:
Policy
The nature of Medic’s role and service to the community mandates continuous
operational ability. Employees who work in functions essential to the 24-hour operations
of Medic, or in functions determined essential by their department director, must maintain their regular work hours during
inclement weather. For other employees, Medic will observe Mecklenburg County’s operating hours during severe weather.
Procedure
During periods of inclement weather, all non-essential employees shall access the official information by calling
Mecklenburg County’s Employee News Now phone line at 704.336.3636 or by monitoring broadcast media.
It is the employee’s responsibility to call and confirm anytime there is a question regarding changes to the Agency’s
operating hours during severe or inclement weather. In times of emergencies or declared disasters, the Agency may require
non-operations personnel to report to work, in support of the emergency services we provide, even when other local
government offices are closed.
To access the complete version of Medic’s Inclement Weather Policy, please visit www.medic911.com/extranet/inclement-
weather.

In order for our patient transports to be billed
properly, it is imperative that all crew members listed
on a patient care report have the correct certification
level listed. We are currently refining the process to
capture and update certification levels within Siren
when upgrades (EMT to Paramedic) occur. Medical
Services is aware that a number of employees have
certification levels that are incorrect when you initially
log in (these should be corrected, very soon).
While a process is being developed to ensure that
upgrades are captured and updated in Siren, we are
asking that all employees ensure that your
certification level is correctly listed when you
log in. If it is not correct, you can change it
during the log in process. This will have to be
done every time you log in until the crew level is changed on your Siren account.
If you are listed with the wrong certification when you initially log in to Siren, please send an e-mail to
[email protected] and changes will be made to your account to reflect correct the default level. As always, if you have
any other questions regarding Siren, please feel free to contact Brian at ext. 6142or via e-mail at [email protected].
