News From The Front Line March 7, 2011

The MEDIC Dispatch

From the Desk of Barry Bagwell: Full Shift Bid

Operations staff recently completed a demand analysis for 9-1-1 call volume and a benefit leave

forecasting plan. After reviewing this information, it was clear scheduling adjustments are

needed to address increases in call volume and changes to the 9-1-1 call distribution

patterns. Therefore, Medic will be conducting a full shift bid during March 2011 with

a target implementation of the new shifts on June 14, 2011.

With the full shift bid comes the opportunity to implement new schedule options that will

provide employees with more flexibility while still meeting the needs of our patients.

Operations staff would like to provide an overview of the changes directly to our employees

and hear what they think about the changes or other suggestions that they may have.

Eight employee information sessions will be held at Medic headquarters. Sessions will

begin one hour prior to the start of InService and any personnel that chooses to attend will be

compensated for their time. In addition to discussing the new scheduling options, operations

staff will review the shift bid process and discuss upcoming revisions for how employees are

awarded shift assignments (seniority + performance).

Your patience and cooperation during this process is appreciated and your input during the

information sessions is strongly encouraged. If you have any questions, please engage in a

discussion with your supervisor as more information is disseminated through the employee

input sessions.

Shift Bid Timeline:

3/7 – Employee input deadline

3/8 – Distribute shift survey from information obtained during input sessions. Survey will include shift option selection for popularity evaluation.

3/15 – Survey results due and evaluated. Placement of shift structure begins.

3/31 or sooner – Employee Shift Bid forms are distributed.

4/18 – Employee Shift Bid selection deadline. Shift assignment processing begins.

4/25 – Employee Shift Assignments are posted.

6/14 – New shifts Assignments begin.

All benefit time that has been approved for dates after implementation will continue to be

honored. Our intent will be to align the majority of employees who prefer to remain on their

current A/B shift rotation to continue to do so if they choose, thus lessening the impact

of any change.

Since the Agency’s implementation of the Smith System Drivers Training, Agency

accidents have been reduced by more than 70%. The Agency spent a total of $750.00

on accidents in January and we have spent zero on accidents in February! That is a

major reduction considering we were averaging over $9,000 a month from July-

December 2010.

The Smith System is a proven set of techniques to help drivers prevent accidents by

teaching time, space and distance. It has proven to be an effective tool for us and so

we are very pleased to announce that more than half of Agency employees have

completed this training! In order to get all others through, we are asking that

everyone who has not completed training sign up by Friday, March 18th. Remember,

your participation in this program is mandatory and employees that fail to complete

the training may be placed in a non-work status until additional sessions are

conducted.

Classes will continue to be held M-F at 6:30 am and 12:30 pm. Saturday classes will be

added starting March 5th at 8:00 am and at 12:00 pm. Any questions about the Smith

Drivers Training System should be directed to Risk and Safety Specialist, Amy Johnson

at 704.943.6095 (office), 980.395.3054 (cell) or via e-mail at [email protected].
