0800—1200 The PR department is pleased to offer employees photo collages from the Employee Recognition
Ceremony back in June. Photographer Ron Deshaies from Treasured Events of Charlotte, Inc.
has put together an awesome photo collage (one for each night) to showcase the event and
serve as a keepsake for Medic Employees for years to come.
The PR department has 100 photo collages up for distribution for each night. **Limit one photo
collage per Medic employee.**
Simply e-mail Nikkie Perry at [email protected] if you would like to receive a photo
collage from the 2011 Employee Recognition Ceremony. Please indicate which night (June 7th (A-
Shift employees) or June 8th (B-Shift employees)). Please note that photo collage quantities are
limited and will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
Re-live the wonderful ceremony and share it with friends and family! Thank you again for all the
hard work you perform out in the community each and every day.

The impact of influenza
On average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each
year in the United States from complications related to
influenza.
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious disease
of the respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs) that can lead
to serious complications, such as pneumonia and dehydration,
and worsening of chronic conditions, such as congestive heart
failure, asthma or diabetes. Flu symptoms may include fever,
headaches, extreme tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal
congestion and body aches.
The value of vaccination
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
recommends getting a vaccination each fall as the best way to
prevent getting the flu. The flu vaccine is convenient,
inexpensive and highly effective. The prevention rate for the
flu vaccine is about 70 to 90 percent for healthy people
younger than 65.
Clearing up the confusion
Myth: I might catch the flu from the vaccine.
Fact: Flu vaccine injections are made from influenza viruses
that have been killed—a killed virus cannot give you the flu.
The Importance of Flu Vaccinations

The Support Services division has noticed a significant change in the way we do business since the implementation of the
new Field Operations shift schedules back in June. We are now seeing peaks with as many as 12 or more units returning in
need of being checked/restocked with nearly as many or more in need of equipment to begin their shift.
To alleviate some of the burden in getting all Medic units out without delay, we are adding two additional OST
positions...bringing the total number of OSTs to 16. As a result, the entire schedule and line-up for OSTs has been re-
evaluated; allocating additional personnel where they are needed while at the same time moving personnel off areas that
have less demand.
Effective, TOMRROW, September 20th, a new OST schedule will be in place to best meet the demands of Field
Operations. Please contact Operations Manager – Support Services, Bryan Edwards at [email protected] with any
questions or comments you may have about the new OST structure and schedule.
OST Schedule Change
Please be advised that due to maintenance and sign-on
security improvements, Medic’s Extranet is currently
inaccessible.
Please contact a member of the HR department if you have
any questions regarding Medic benefits or if you need
access to specific form(s).
The HR department would also like to announce that it is
in the preliminary stages of upgrading the Extranet
homepage. Be on the lookout for better functionality as
well as a sleeker homepage design.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank
you for your patience. Please e-mail the HR department at
[email protected] if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Medic Training Standards
Please be advised that the dates and times for Scope of
Practice testing will soon change. The Learning and
Development department will dedicate two days out of
every month for Scope of Practice testing, rather
than conducting them on a quarterly basis. Scope of
Practice testing should be completed within 90-days from
your expiration date in order to meet the North Carolina
Office of EMS standards. Completing the Scope of Practice
within this timeframe will provide Medic employees with
the opportunity to test up to two months before your
expiration date. Notices will be sent out approximately 120
days prior to your expiration, encouraging you to schedule
your appointment for testing. However, we strongly
encourage to sign up the first month you are eligible rather
than waiting. Below are the new dates for Scope of Practice
Testing, here at Medic:
October 11th, 12th
November 8th, 9th
December 13th, 14th
Please contact Sam Barnes at ext. 6143 or via e-mail at
[email protected] if you have any questions about the
new Scope of Practice testing schedule.

Medic began a randomized trial of intra-arrest therapeutic hypothermia compared to post-arrest resuscitation hypothermia.
All Medic field crews have been provided a randomization card that contains information as to when you should initiate
hypothermia on a cardiac arrest case should one occur during your shift.
Please be sure to call the study voicemail and provide the information outlined on the back of the study card if you
responded to a cardiac arrest and would like to enroll a patient into the study. If you have enrolled a patient into the study,
please turn in your study card either to the OA on duty or to the OST with the rest of your equipment at the end of your
shift.
Please remember to only enroll adult, medical cardiac arrests. Pediatric patients (<18 years old), traumatic arrests,
electrocutions, suspected pregnancy and cardiac arrests as the result of a drowning are to be excluded.
Study Reminders:
Enroll first cardiac arrest of shift in which resuscitation is initiated
Immediate hypothermia –begin TH as soon as possible during the resuscitation. After ROSC hypothermia – initiate TH
only if ROSC is achieved.
Only your first cardiac arrest of the day should be enrolled, subsequent patients should follow local protocol
(immediate hypothermia).
Turn-in completed study cards to the O.A. following any medical cardiac arrest.
Call in to study voicemail 704.943.6097 after each completed cardiac arrest.
Your cooperation and compliance is essential to the success of this trial. Please direct any questions to Steve Vandeventer
at [email protected], 980.406.1220 or Dr. Jonathan Studnek at [email protected], 704.943.6046.

Top 10 (as recorded on September 14th)
Try these ideas for walking with kids...
Easy activities can help children stay interested and engaged when you are taking a family hike or simply walking to school
or the playground.
1. I Spy: It's no wonder this is a classic travel game and it works just as well when you are on foot! Make it more
challenging by adding rules, such as "natural items only" or "pick something that has a name that shares your
initial."
2. When You Hear ... : Pick a trigger sound, such as a car horn's honk or a bird's chirp. Line up in single file and
start walking. When you hear the special sound, the first person in the line has to run to the back and become
the caboose. Continue until everyone's had a turn to lead the line.
3. Count Off: Pick something to keep track of, from red cars to dead trees. Make it a contest or collaborate,
whichever is more appealing to your crew of walkers.
4. Spelling Bee: Have children challenge each other--and you--to spell words based on what they can see, such as
"crow" or "cement" or "caterpillar."
