According to a report from the American Heart Association Statistics Committee and Stroke Statistics Committee, heart disease figured to cost the United States in excess of $315 billion in 2010 alone. While there's no single cause of heart disease, a person's lifestyle can greatly reduce or increase his or her risk for heart disease.

One of the best ways a man or woman can reduce the risk for heart disease is to watch what he or she eats. A poor diet can cause obesity and high cholesterol and increase a person's risk for diabetes. In a 2008 report, the National Center for Health Statistics noted that 33.9 percent of adults in the United States could qualify as overweight or obese in 2005-06. In addition, high blood pressure affected 30.5 percent of adults during that same time period. Being overweight or obese and having high blood pressure are risk factors for heart disease, and all can be controlled by adults who commit to changing their diets.

Though there are risk factors for these conditions besides poor diet, maintaining a healthy diet is a big step for adults looking to reduce their risk of heart disease as well as a host of other ailments. When added to a diet, the following foods can help health-conscious men and women live healthier lives.

* Almonds: Almonds can help men and women control their weight and improve their heart health. What's more,

almonds, which are a good source of protein, fiber and vitamin E, might help reduce a person's risk of Alzheimer's disease.

* Coffee: The medical community has varying opinions on coffee, but when consumed in moderate doses, coffee might help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and, for men, Parkinson's disease.

Many of us have our own ideas about hospice, which usually stem from our personal experiences - good or bad. There are many myths and misconceptions in regards to hospice. Knowing the facts will help ensure you receive the best possible care.

mytH 1: Hospice is only for people with cancer. Medicare now allows more people the opportunity to reap

the benefits of hospice services. Today, cancer diagnoses account for less than half of all hospice admissions (38.8%). Additionally, less than 25 percent of U.S. deaths are caused by cancer, with the majority due to other terminal diagnoses (2009 NHPCO Facts and Figures). These illnesses include, but are not limited to: AIDS, Alzheimers, Stroke, Kidney Disease, Lung Disease, Dementia, Failure to Thrive, ALS, Liver Disease, and many others.

mytH 2: Hospice care is expensive. Hospice is covered 100% by Medicare, Medicaid, and most

private insurances. SOME hospices elect to charge co-pays for medications or as much as five percent of any respite care that is given. If asked, individuals with limited financial resources and no health care coverage may qualify for support from some hospices.

mytH 3: Hospice patients cannot keep their own physician and receive hospice care.

Hospice does not require a patient to change physicians to receive hospice care. In fact, the patients’ physician works in coordination with the hospice team. In most cases, the physician has been with the patient for many years, and hospice is simply an extra specialty that focuses on end-of-life care.

mytH 4: Hospice is only provided in the home. Whether you live in an assisted living facility, nursing home,

your own home, or your family’s home, hospice comes to you! Hospice assists patients and families in achieving individual goals as much as possible.

Often seen as an inevitable side effect of aging, arthritis can be a painful and ultimately costly condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arthritis costs $128 billion annually, much of which is due to disability claims. Arthritis remains the most common cause of disability, and men and women continue to be diagnosed at an almost staggering rate.

Between 2007-09, CDC figures indicate that an estimated 22.2 percent of all U.S. adults, or 49.9 million men and women, reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis. As common as it might be, arthritis remains a mystery to many adults. But understanding arthritis can help men and women reduce their risk of joining the millions and millions of adults who battle this often painful condition every day.

What is arthritis?Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints which

results in pain, swelling, limited movement, or stiffness. If that definition seems broad, it is. All told, there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, and men and women can suffer from more than one type.

What happens when arthritis occurs?When a person has arthritis, his or her cartilage, or the

tissue that normally protects the joint and absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, breaks down. This breakdown makes it difficult to move smoothly. The breakdown can lead to painful side effects. Less cartilage, for instance, causes the bones to rub together, ultimately leading to pain, inflammation and stiffness.

What is arthritis doing to the joints?Not every type of arthritis damages the joints in the same

way. Osteoarthritis, which is usually caused by normal wear and tear, and rheumatoid arthritis, which often results from an attack on the immune system, are two of the most common forms of arthritis.

When a person has osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear their cartilage undergoes can cause the joint's bones to grind directly on each other, a painful and restrictive side effect that can develop over the years or be hastened by an infection or an injury to the joint.

When a person has rheumatoid arthritis, something triggers the immune system to attack the joints and possibly even other organs. Precisely what triggers the immune system remains a mystery, though some researchers suggest it's a virus or bacteria while others feel smoking might play a role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis. Once the system is triggered, the immune cells then migrate from the blood into the joints and the joint lining tissue, known as synovium. Once there, the immune cells produce inflammatory substances. This influx of cells and inflammatory substances within the joints causes irritation, swelling and inflammation and also wears down

the cartilage, which can eventually cause the bones to rub together.

Are there risk factors for arthritis?Not everyone has to suffer from arthritis, and there are several

risk factors that increase a person's chance of developing one of the more than 100 types of arthritis.

* Family history: Some types of arthritis run in families. That might seem counterintuitive, but a person's genes can actually make them more susceptible to environmental factors that can trigger arthritis.

* Gender: Women are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while gout, a disease that can cause arthritis, is more common among men.

* Previous joint injury: Anyone who has suffered a joint injury in the past is more likely to develop injury in that joint. Athletes, for example, are often more susceptible because of injuries suffered while playing a sport.

* Obesity: Obese men and women often put undue stress on joints, particularly the knees, hips and spine. That puts them at a higher risk of developing some form of arthritis.

* Age: The risk of arthritis increases with age.Arthritis affects millions of people across the globe every

day. Understanding the condition can help men and women effectively handle arthritis should they be diagnosed.

Though certainly not the most common form of skin cancer, melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. According to the American Melanoma Foundation, the incidence of melanoma has been steadily increasing for the last three decades.

The most common form of cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old, melanoma can affect just the skin or spread to other parts of the body, including organs and bones. Because the incidence of melanoma is on the rise, it helps men and women, and even children and teens, to learn about melanoma in the hopes of preventing the onset of this potentially fatal form of skin cancer.

What causes melanoma?Normal skin cells become abnormal

when people spend too much time in the sun. Once skin cells become abnormal, they can quickly grow out of control and attack the tissue around them. People who live in regions where sunlight is more intense, such as the southern United States, are more likely to develop melanoma than those who live in regions where sunlight is not as intense. In addition, parents should be especially mindful of their child's sun exposure. As the AMF notes, melanoma has been linked to excessive sun exposure in the first 10 to 18 years of life.

does melanoma run in families?Melanoma does tend to run in families, and people with

abnormal moles might have a family history of melanoma. While these atypical moles, which can be smooth or appear rough, don't cause cancer by themselves, having them could indicate a family history of melanoma. People with such moles should be especially protective of their skin when spending time in the sun.

What are the symptoms of melanoma?Melanoma often manifests itself in changes in a mole or other

growth on the skin. When a mole changes in shape, size or color it could be a sign of melanoma. Typically, however, melanoma grows in unmarked skin and can be found anywhere on the body. Where melanoma forms often depends on gender. In men, melanoma is most likely to develop on the upper back. For women, melanomas often develop on the legs.

A flat, brown or black mole with uneven edges, melanoma usually has an irregular shape, with one half not matching the other. Melanomas can change color, ooze or bleed, become

crusty, and appear lumpy or rounded.

is melanoma preventable?Melanoma might not be entirely preventable, but men,

women and children can take steps to reduce their risk significantly. Melanoma has been found on parts of the body that have never been exposed to the sun, but the best way to protect against melanoma is to be careful when out in the sun. Avoiding exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays is the most effective preventive step, and people can do that in a number of ways.

* Stay out of the sun in peak UV hours. UV rays are at their strongest and most harmful between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4

p.m. Stay out of the sun during these hours as much as possible.

* Avoid tanning salons. Researchers do feel there is a link between the growing popularity of tanning salons and the rise in melanoma cases. The AMF notes that the rate of melanoma incidence in young white women, who are among the most frequent tanning salon customers, is rising rapidly.

* Wear protective clothes when in the sun. Long-sleeved shirts, protective hats that shade the face and long pants are some of the clothing options that can reduce risk of melanoma.

* Wear sunscreen every day. Sunscreen should have a sun protection factor, or SPF,

of at least 15. Apply sunscreen every day, and look for products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

What if i am diagnosed with melanoma?Melanoma diagnosis is not a death sentence. In fact, melanoma

is staged on a scale of 1 to 4. A stage 1 melanoma is less severe, while a stage 4 indicates the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. According to the American Cancer Society, when melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent. A person's chance of surviving a melanoma diagnosis greatly increases the earlier it is detected, so men and women who spend ample time in the sun should routinely inspect their skin for any abnormal moles. Parents, too, should make it a point to inspect their children's skin after exposure to the sun.

Most adults recall a time or times when their mothers insisted they drink their milk. Though it might not have been preferred at the time, adults might now recognize Mom was doing her best to help her kids build and maintain strong bones. Those who didn't listen to Mommy dearest might find themselves among the 44 million Americans whom the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates live with osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of unexpected fractures.

But why milk? While milk alone won't prevent osteoporosis, dairy products like milk are rich in calcium, an essential nutrient for building and maintaining strong bones. In addition, getting an early start is especially important, as the NOF notes that roughly 85-90 percent of adult bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and age 20 in boys. Though this still might not inspire kids to pour themselves a glass of milk, perhaps a better understanding of osteoporosis and its potentially debilitating effects can inspire adults and children alike to do all they can to prevent the onset of osteoporosis.

What is osteoporosis?Osteoporosis is often mistaken as a condition that only

affects little old ladies. While osteoporosis is most common in older women, anyone can develop it. As many as half of all women and a quarter of men older than 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis, which many men and women are not even aware they have until that initial injury occurs.

What Happens When a person Has osteoporosis?When discussing osteoporosis, it's best to first discuss

osteopenia, a silent condition the precedes osteoporosis, often robbing bones of their strength. Osteopenia is related to bone mineral density, which measures the levels of minerals in the bones. When BMD levels are low, a person is said to have

osteopenia, which can, and often does, gradually become osteoporosis.

Osteopenia is akin to an accomplished art thief. Methodical and often unnoticed, osteopenia exhibits no physical signs, and even the most physically active people could have osteopenia and not know it. The first warning sign could be a fractured bone.

When a person has fractured a bone, he or she might already have osteoporosis. When osteoporosis has established itself, the bones have weakened and become thin and are highly susceptible to fracture. For example, it's not impossible for a person with osteoporosis to lift a bag of groceries and break a bone or suffer a collapsed vertebra in the back. Such a task might otherwise seem trivial, but to a person with osteoporosis, no physical activity is without risk.

Can osteoporosis Be prevented?Fortunately, osteoporosis and any resulting fractures can

often be prevented. As previously mentioned, thanks to bone mass development it's important for parents to encourage kids to increase the amount of calcium in their diet. Milk and dairy products, preferably low fat versions; dark green

leafy vegetables (including broccoli, collards and kale); and calcium-fortified orange juice are great sources of calcium.

Another way to prevent osteoporosis is to exercise regularly. Routine exercise helps strengthen bones and muscles and prevent bone loss. Weight-bearing exercises, which include walking, jogging and even dancing, done three to four times a week are the best for preventing osteoporosis. Strength and balance exercises also help avoid falling, decreasing the risk of broken bones.

Adequate calcium is necessary to prevent osteoporosis, but men and women must also make sure to include vitamin D in their diet. Vitamin D, which can be found in eggs, fatty fish (including salmon), cereal, and even some supplements, is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Research continues to indicate that people are simply not getting enough vitamin D. Discuss vitamin D with a physician to determine the best way to get more of it in your daily diet.
