Come the middle school years, how your child handles

himself in the formal interviewis key to GETTING IN.

By Dori Richards

Spring 2012 • 7Private School Directory

By Dori Richards

When you set the wheels in motion to apply for private

school with your middle schooler, you'll find that an in-

terview is an important part of the process. First, don't

worry! With a little preparation and understanding of

what to expect from an interview, your child can sail right through. There are

basically four parts to the interview: 1) Introductions; 2) They ask questions;

3) You ask them questions; 4) Conclusion. So where to begin?

First, encourage your child to be positive, says the National Association

of Independent Schools (NAIS). Even if your family is switching schools

because of a negative experience, your child should focus on the good, not

the bad. Help your child come up with things she can say no matter what her

interviewer asks. Here's how:

1. Set the Scene.Prospective students will often meet with one or two people at interview time. Typically the admissions director is present, but another representative of the school may be there also. The admissions director will make every effort to be casual, knowing that students are nervous about this part. Your child will usually be interviewed in the school's admission office.

TELL YOUR CHILD: You'll meet with a school representative whose job is to get to know students. You'll sit down and talk, and they'll ask you about yourself and you can ask about the school. All you have to do is be yourself. They'll ask you some questions, too.

2. Prepare for their questions. While you don't want your child to communicate robotically in her interview, being ready for what comes her way will be helpful, says author Kevin Ninomi-ya in his book, Secrets of Private School Admission and SSAT Preparation to Grades 6 Thru 9 ($2.99; Kindle edition). Work with your child to come up with answers that point to her interests. Some of the questions your child may be asked, according to NAIS include:

• What's your favorite class or subject and why?• Do you have any hobbies or play any sports?• Tell me about yourself.• What books have you read lately?• What did you do last summer?• Why do you want to come to this school?

TELL YOUR CHILD: These are some of the things the inter-viewer might ask about. Take some time by yourself to prepare what you'd like to say. If you need me to help you with it, I can, but I know you can do it yourself, too.

3. Have questions for THEM.Near the end of your child's interview, the admissions person will ask if your child has any questions. Be prepared by coming up with questions before-hand. Have your child review school websites with a pad and pencil nearby so she can jot down questions that come to her mind. Keep in mind that good questions will reflect your child's interests, Ninomiya says. Some examples could be: "I really like learning about the Civil War ... do the history classes include that era?" or "I know you have a theater program. Do sixth-graders get to participate?"

TELL YOUR CHILD: I want to make sure that you like the school as much as the school likes you — think about what your fa-vorite subjects and hobbies are and ask the admissions person if they offer anything in those areas for you.

4. Be positive, dress nicely. In almost any interview situation, being positive, enthusiastic and confident are important, and so, too, is wearing something appealing. Encourage your child to use eye contact when talking, and while she doesn't have to smile if she's not inclined, being positive and making an effort is a good thing.

TELL YOUR CHILD: You will do a good job in your interview because you are prepared and I know you will do your best to look sharp!

5. Practice makes perfect. While your child can always be interviewed by you, it's not the same as be-ing interviewed by a total stranger. If you think your child would benefit from a practice interview, see if another adult friend (with whom your child is not already close) would be willing to spend 15 minutes interviewing your her and giving you feedback.

TELL YOUR CHILD: My friend Marie is going to do a practice interview with you so it will make the "official" one easier ... then we can smooth things up. I know you're doing to do great!
