You want the strong curriculum, individualized attention, superior arts programs and small class sizes, but private schools are costly. Here's what you need to know.

By Dori Richards

paying for

PRIVATE

In the rocky 2011 economic environment, everyone's seeking rea-

sonable ways to make private school affordable for their children,

and that means financial aid. It goes as follows: Schools award

financial aid grants based upon the need of the family. These

grants are used to offset tuition costs and do not have to be paid

back. The grant money comes from the school's budget and dem-

onstrates the school's commitment to having a socio-economic range in

the student body.

What can you expect for your family? To begin the financial aid pro-

cess, if the school you are applying to advises you to do so, you will fill

out a Parent's Financial Statement (PFS) found at the School

and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) website oper-

ated by the National Association of Independent Schools

(NAIS), nais.org. Very easily, you can create an online account with

an online guide assisting you along the way. Almost all of Middle Tennes-

see's private schools are subscribers to SSS. Using the PFS, NAIS de-

termines a family's ability to pay for school tuition and other educational

expenses. What a family is awarded will vary considerably from school to

school since endowments, tuitions and philosophies for awarding money

are all different.

It pays to apply for aid at more than one school, and the beauty of the

PFS is that you only have to fill it out once.

While most schools offer need-based aid, some schools also offer

special scholarships based on criteria other than economic circumstanc-

es. Examples of non-need-based awards are merit scholarships and

sibling discounts. Ask about scholarship possibilities at each school of

interest.

Merit scholarship awards — merit-based financial aid — are based

upon demonstrated talents like athletics, arts or academics, but fewer

than five percent of enrolled students receive them. If you think your child

may qualify for a merit award, it is important that you check with the

school about the particulars of their merit-award program.

Sibling discounts depend upon the number of children enrolled with-

in the same school; these discounts are usually not very large, but every

bit helps.

Many families require assistance beyond what schools can offer. Tu-

ition loans are available to credit-worthy families from different providers,

and they assist many families in making tuition payments more afford-

able by providing the funds upfront and spreading the payments over a

longer period of time than a tuition payment plan allows. For instance,

Sallie Mae — the nation's leading provider of student loans and adminis-

trators for college funds — has a K - 12 Family Education Loan

that allows parents to cover the entire cost of their child's education in

private primary and secondary schools, including prep schools, military

schools, Montessori schools, boarding schools and others. Visit sal-

liemae.com for more information. — dori richards

cesses financial information and sends it to the schools parents

have selected while ensuring each family's request for financial

aid is treated objectively and professionally. Member schools

then work with families to reduce educational charges by help-

ing obtain financial aid and scholarships. For more information

about SSS, call 800-344-8328 or visit http://sss.nais.org/.
