4. BIO-35/HES-1 Health Science, 3 Units, UC, CSU

This course is a general education course that offers a basic study of human health and health care as revealed in the anatomy and physiology of the body, nutrition, exercise, stress management, weight management, protection from degenerative and communicable diseases, personal safety, environmental health, and professional medical care. The scientifically discussed dimensions of wellness include body, mind and spirit. Students will explore making responsible decisions regarding all aspects of healthy life style including getting fit, disease prevention and treatments, substances use and abuse, human sexuality, and selection of health providers. We will journal while abroad the similarities and differences of the European lifestyle so students can permanently incorporate those healthy habits into their routines upon their return from studying abroad. While abroad, students will visit local eateries, markets, houses of worship, and sites for relaxation to complement the course.

5. BIO-19 (Formerly BIO-36) Environmental Science, 3 units, UC, CSU

A study of humans in relation to the environment that emphasizes population ecology, nutrient cycles and energy flow, pollution, food production, and conservation of natural resources. The course will be focused on Barcelona’s, Spain’s, and Europa’s environmental concerns in comparison to the US’s. Students will be permitted to choose as a final exam/project for the course either a written report or community service hours performed while in Barcelona. Field trips will include visits to recycling centers, particularly affected areas we discuss in class like la Zona Franca, the Port Area, and centers for community service that students identify of particular interest, such as beach clean-up efforts.

6. BIO-18 (Formerly BIO-34) Human Genetics, 3 units, UC, CSU

Advisory: High school biology or any college life science course with laboratory. This is a general education course for non-biology majors and allied health students who are interested in the underlying mechanisms of human heredity. Emphasis will be given to the role of genetics and environment on cells, individuals, family and human populations. Discussion on human genetic disorders and the social implications of modern human genetics will be included. The course will be structured around the comprehension of genetically modified organisms. The final project of the course will be conducted during the last two weeks of classes while abroad where students will role-play being delegates to a special summit of the World Trade Organization debating genetic engineering and the patenting of foods. Barcelona is a major biotechnological hub of Europe and students will visit various public and private laboratories, La Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and conferences or gatherings that discuss bioengineering and genetics.
