DESCRIPTION

Born and brought up in Mumbai, during my school and college days I would disassemble products around me just out of curiosity. Of course I would put them back together again but the point is that I found this mechanical deconstruction very exciting. Later I decided that I best be putting such talent to good use and so I did my bachelors in PD from the University of Hertfordshire, London, UK. I am passionate about design, I love to work with my hands, blah blah blah....I could go on but the bottom line is I want to be part of and an asset to a hardcore Industrial Product Design team which is process driven. And if your team is running 1 member short, I’m your guy.

Brief: Design a range of mobile phones within the Rs.15,000 price bracket.

Process: Researched on all popular phones available in the market. Carried out a ‘user opinion survey’ focused on pros cons and a wishlist. Explored different forms and futuris-tic designs. Conclusion: People dont want to spend time figuring out their phone. They want the phone to do what it’s supposed to. 4 important factors are ‘speed’, ‘seemless’, ‘utility’ and ‘look’.Outcome: Designed a range of phones within the price bracket with features such as direct connect USB, charging mechanism, etc.

Brief: Redesign the Landline phone provided by Airtel.Process: Analysed the phone and key layout. Took a functional approach and observed that keys were placed haphaz-ardly. eg: memory keys were not uniquely shaped and what was stored on them could not be seen. Calculator function and keys were hidden. Outcome: Grouped similar family/function keys together. Shifted the memory keys beside the screen and suggested that when the receiver is lifted, contacts stored on the memory keys are displayed. Calculator function keys grouped together.

RSA DESIGN FOR PATIENT SAFETY / 2006RSA DESIGN FOR PATIENT SAFETY / 2006

Brief: Design product/environment to improve the experience of elderly and disabled patients in the hospital

Process: Researched on hospital and patient care practices. Visited 4 hospitals, met with doctors and patients and heard their opinions and greviences. Realised that due to the perpetual shortage of nurses, patients always suffer. Being served cold food, not being able to eat, weakness are just a few.

Outcome: Intuitive Arm Support System designed to assist patients while eating by reducing weight of arm. Redesigned the salt, pepper, mayonnaise and ketchup packaging to ease access to its contents with onehand or 3 fingers only.

CRISP CRACKER / 2005CRISP CRACKER / 2005

CRISP CRACKER/ 2005Brief: Design a way to open a

crisp(chips) bag without touching it.

Process: Being a fun project we didn’t really do much reserch. Since a crisps packet is airtight, we decided to use this feature to force the bag through rollers coated with latex to provide grip. The force of air pressure would break the packet open on the opposite side.

Outcome: We created the ‘Crisp Cracker’ everything worked well except for some broken chips in the process.

SPICE EYE / 2005Brief: Design a spice rack as a guys toy!

Process: As a guys toy I decided to give the rack a rachet system. The problem faced with current spice racks is that the spices placed behind in a shelf cannot be reached easily.

Outcome: A prototype was designed using MDF and cardboard and a spring loaded rachet system to turn the wheel around.

Self Initiated project: This German Car became part of the family in the 50’s when my grand father bought it from South Africa to India by ship. It was used a lot during those days by my grand dad and then my dad. Later in the 80’s it took a backseat for about a decade or 2 behind the garage where it gradually rusted so bad that you could kick a hole into the body-work.As a summer project in the year 2002 I took on rebuilding the car. With my family’s sup-port I headed a small team of workers disman-telling and then rebuilding the car from scratch, engine, bracking system, lighting, everything. About a year later and a brand new piston from the UK Messerschmitt Owners Club, the car is back on the road, currently sitting in my garage in Mumbai.
