Super Swimmers Recently we have had some excellent swimming results. At the Riverina CHS carnival in Leeton, Georgia Gleeson was selected as a member of the Riverina Swimming team which will compete in Sydney. This is a wonderful achievement. Callum McNab was named Senior Boy Champion at the District Swimming carnival, another outstanding performance. Apart from these achievements, all of our students who competed in both the primary and secondary district carnival should be congratulated on their excellent sportsmanship.
Georgia Gleeson will compete for the Riverina Swimming team in Sydney.
Callum McNab was named District Swimming Senior Champion.
We also had a team of students represent our school at the All Schools Swimming Carnival in Swan Hill. All of our students should be proud of their efforts. Thank you to Kaylene Gleeson for organising this team. Back to School Last week ABC Foreign Correspondent, Kerri Ritchie (past Tooleybuc Central School student) spoke with students about her career as a journalist. Kerri outlined the duties involved in her career and the different stories she has covered. Kerri also stressed the need to „aim high‟ and try for the best job you can have, because if you are going to have to work, then you might as well love going to work. Kerri has had the opportunity to travel the world with her career just completing a two year posting in New Zealand and about to take up a stint in Indonesia P & C Car Boot Sale Tomorrow (Saturday March 13) our P & C will be holding a Car Boot Sale at the Tooleybuc Park from 7.30 am. There will be a range of goods on sale as well as a BBQ Breakfast. It would be wonderful to see as many people supporting this fundraiser as possible. Looking forward to seeing you there. Class Connections Over the last few weeks and in the coming weeks our students have been participating in a number of „connections‟ using Video Conferencing. Students have linked up with:
The Alaskan Sea Life Centre

Home Reading Home reading is an important aspect of your child‟s literacy development. Each student in primary has a yellow home reading booklet where they record how much reading they have undertaken. Just fifteen minutes of reading a night can make a huge difference to your child‟s abilities. PSSA AFL This year the following boys will represent Tooleybuc in the Moulamein PSSA AFL team in Barooga on Monday 15th March. They are Cooper Spinks, Callum McNab and Jason Forster. All the best for the carnival boys. Young Leaders – Deniliquin / Melbourne On Wednesday 3rd March Ola Nimo, Rachel Hoare, Neve Lockhart, Jaide Berg, Kelly Richardson, Jess O‟Bree, Callum McNab, Jason Forster and Harry Hickey were involved in a young leaders day in Deniliquin. Students were given a talk about self confidence and leadership in primary schools.
On Thursday 11th and Friday 12th March the same young leaders were in Melbourne attending a Leadership conference. This conference is to further develop skills in the students about leadership, confidence and positive attitudes. We look forward to hearing about their trip. Easter Hat Parade On the last day of term, Thursday 1st April starting at 2pm will be the Easter Hat Parade. Students are to create an Easter Hat at home and bring it in on the day of the parade. Every child that participates will receive a small Easter egg. The Preschool will also be involved. So start getting ready, it‟s only a few short weeks away. Students also received a colouring in competition on Friday 5th March. These are due back by Monday 29th March ready to be displayed for the Easter Hat Parade. If your child missed out please see their teacher. Clean Up Australia Day On Friday 5th March students at Tooleybuc were involved with cleaning up areas of Tooleybuc as part of Clean Up Australia Day. It was great to see how eager the students were to clean up the local area. It was a shame though, to see the amount of rubbish they collected.
Kindergarten students were proud of their effort during Clean Up Australia.
Paul Stafford Video Conferences This week students in Year Three/Four have been involved in four video conferences with children‟s author Paul Stafford. Paul broadcasted these conferences out of the Australian Fossil and Mineral in Bathurst. Students were provided with a virtual tour of the Museum and engaged in conversation with Paul and students from other schools in the state.

The focus of the video conferences is for Paul to teach students how to best plan for writing a story. I look forward to reading the finished stories. Students in Year Five/Six will be involved in these conferences next week. Kindergarten Term 1 2010.
I am pleased to say all 12 of the Kindergarten class have settled in to school routine and are well on their way, in this learning journey .
Well done to all those family members who diligently pack the school lunches as almost every student has a suitable piece of fruit for fruit break each day, and as an added bonus Kindergarten were the Waste Wise Winners last week!! Great job everyone. Major progress has been made by the class in Phonics. We have been working really hard on learning the sounds made by each letter of the alphabet. All the children have been working hard at this. Of course our goal is to then be able to transfer this knowledge when attempting to read or to write a short story. This takes much practise and we are all making progress. The major focus in mathematics has been number. Counting forwards and backwards, numeral recognition and numeral formation. We have also been sorting, grouping, adding, collecting data and making simple picture graphs. We have been doing an integrated unit of work titled This is Me, this has included work in HSIE, Science, Art and Physical education. The class has some excellent art work on display so please feel free to come in and have a look next time your in the school. Andrea Hazlett Class Teacher.

Moulamein PSSA Swimming Carnival A contingent of 20 students travelled to Swan Hill for the Moulamein PSSA Swimming Carnival on Friday 26th February. In quite hot conditions, students swam their hardest against some very tough competition from Balranald, Barham, Moulamein, Mallan and Wakool. I would like to congratulate the students on their efforts on the day as well as being wonderful ambassadors for the school. I would also like to thank the many parents for being there to cheer the students on and for

Top Eight Ways to Improve Reading Skills
Nothing is more important to academic achievement than being a good reader. Here is a list of ways parents can help your child become more effective readers.
1. Set aside a regular time to read to your
children every day.
Regularly reading out loud to children will
produce significant gains in reading
comprehension, vocabulary, and the decoding of
words. Whether your children are preschoolers
or teenagers, it will increase their desire to read
independently.
2. Surround your children with reading
material.
Children with a large variety of reading materials

6
in their homes have greater confidence in school
literacy activities. Tempt your kids to read by
having a large supply of appealing books and
magazines at their reading level. Put the reading
materials in cars, bedrooms, family rooms and
the kitchen.
3. Have a family reading time.
Establish a daily 15 to 30 minute time when
everyone in the family reads together silently.
Seeing you read will inspire your children to
read. Just 15 minutes of daily practise is
sufficient to increase their reading fluency.
4. Encourage a wide variety of reading
activities.
Make reading an integral part of your children's
lives. Have them read menus, roadside signs,
game directions, weather reports, movie time
listings, and other practical everyday
information. Also, make sure they always have
something to read in their spare time when they
could be waiting for appointments or riding in a
car.
5. Develop the library habit.
Entice your children to read more by taking them
to the library every few weeks to get new
reading materials.
6. Be knowledgeable about your children's
progress.
Find out what reading skills they are expected to
have at each grade level. Talk with your child‟s
teacher.
7. Use a variety of aids to help your children.
To help your children improve their reading, use
textbooks, computer programs, books-on-cd,
and other materials available in stores. Games
are especially good choices because they let
children have fun as they work on their skills.
8. Show enthusiasm for your children's
reading.
Your reaction has a great influence on how hard
they will try to become good readers. Be sure to
give them genuine praise for their efforts.

Secondary Report Borambola Last week saw members of our Year Nine class venture out into the big smoke of Wagga Wagga for three days of bonding and physical activity. Borambola was the destination with a large number of activities planned to test the skills and physical prowess of our boys. Monday afternoon saw the boys hook straight into some archery where the competition was fierce. After that an activity of raft building was carried out in the pool – with an innovative design Jack, Adam and Cody managed to win the race (unfortunately there was not a lot of competition with the other team unable to construct anything that could float!). After dinner the boys managed to sweet talk the instructor Tash into taking them kayaking. This was a very interesting exercise with Reece displaying the most unique style of paddling ever seen (lots of splashing but no movement) and Chris struggling to remain out of the water for a period longer than two minutes! The next morning tested their fortitude and fear of heights on the high ropes course. Everyone had a go including Mr Wait and Miss Hunt. Jack shined on the high ropes impressing the camp instructors with his ability to cross the wires with no hands and even managing a spot of shadow boxing. After lunch the boys did their best impressions of Spiderman on the rock climbing wall – nearly all were successful in reaching the top. The highlight of Tuesday was definitely the flying fox. Everyone lined up for two attempts at the freefall and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Alex had a memorable first attempt, his run up fell a little short and he ended up landing on his bottom on the platform before hurling down the zip wire – don‟t worry Mum he‟s fine! After leaving camp on Wednesday, the boys stopped in at the Riverina Education Centre and learned some valuable skills that will enhance their water testing techniques when they complete their Geography site study next year.

Exam Enhancement Footy season has started and many of our students are remaining at school to wait for training. While training is at Tooleybuc Miss Hunt will be running General Mathematics Exam preparation classes. These classes will give students an opportunity to prepare for their HSC exams – by answering questions and enhancing exam techniques. Students from other years can feel free to come along and ask any questions they may have. Thursday afternoons 3.30 – 4.30pm in Room 14. Big Band Beats It‟s that time again! Mrs McKindlay is looking for musical talent to join her line up in this year‟s school band. Miss Hunt is looking for performers to participate in MADD night – a celebration of all things Music, Art, Drama and Dance. Make sure you come along to COIL meetings to participate in these great groups. Year Seven and Eight Science Students have just completed their introductory unit on working scientifically. In this unit students have learnt the basic skills required to operate in the
science classroom. These skills will be invaluable when stating their next area of study 'Solids, Liquids and Gases". Year Nine Science Year Nine students have been working well to complete theory and practical tasks. Our attempts at Mouse Trap cars failed however students had a great go at getting these cars working. Students have recently sat their first topic test. Their next area of study is Reproduction and Disease. Year Ten Science Students are currently studying chemical reactions. In this unit they have covered areas such as the type of reactions the pH scale and working scientifically. Students will receive a take home test which will be part of their assessment for this unit. Agriculture and Primary Industries Senior Agriculture and Primary Industries students are currently working on separate focus areas this term. Year 11 students have been working on the history of Agriculture and how changing roles over the past 50 years has changed the nature of farm practices. Year 12 students have been studying pests and disease and factors affecting fertility. Students must be engaging in extra reading to ensure they are informing themselves in current issues in farming and taking note of the up and coming research. Sport Students have been representing our school in a number of sporting areas. Years Seven, Eight and Nine students travelled to Balranald Friday to compete in the Centrals School Cricket Knockout competition. It will be great to hear of their success. Year Twelve In their final year of study it is important for Year Twelve students to constantly revise their work. This includes finishing of any work missed or not completed in class. If students are not engaging in the activities presented in class they are not making the full benefit off being at school. I recommend that parents meet with their child‟s teachers and review how they are achieving in class. Year Twelve is very full on and it is important to check up on how your child is travelling. It is also very important to ensure that your child has all the equipment necessary to complete all classroom activities. Their work should be organised and sequenced to assist with their understanding of the key concepts of new and old units of study. Mr. Wait

Careers Welcome to 2010. Career Information has slowly been coming in without a lot of Career News to report to date. Firstly for those who don‟t know the Careers Room was moved at the end of lat year. It is now located in the wooden building, the offices where Mrs Ritchie used to be based. The front room is available for Year Eleven and Twelves to use when they have study lessons or wish to access career information. The room is open to all students any lunchtime and is the source of a wonderful lot of career information. This year we have seen the reintroduction of Careers into the Year Nine program, students have been learning about what is careers, in addition to identifying their strengths and weaknesses, goals and values, interests and abilities. A great website which they have been accessing and which is useful for parents also is www.myfuture.edu.au . Year Ten students have begun their preparation for Work Experience which shall occur later in the year. They are currently completing the mandatory OH & S units in addition to identifying where they are currently heading. Year Eleven and Twelve It is important for all students to be thinking about their future career pathway. This helps them focus more and develop goals which will enhance and promote their learning at school. Some questions to ponder when trying to decide on choosing a career include – what interest me?
What do I enjoy doing?
What am I good at?
What school subjects do I like best?
How do I like to spend my spare time?
What is important to me?
How much and what type of study do I wish to
do after finishing school?
Open Day Dates Open Day dates for all Year Twelve to consider. Remember attending Open Days is really important, especially if you intend to apply for a course that requires an interview, folio presentation or audition. Also it may help you decide whether it will suit your interests and needs. 31st Jul Monash Uni (Brunswick, Gippsland and

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS 2009 The New South Wales Government provides much of the necessary equipment and materials for the efficient running of the school. However, to keep up to date with the latest textbooks and to supply materials for such subjects as technics, craft and food technology, parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution. These are reviewed each year and kept to an absolute minimum, and are payable at the beginning of each school year. These contributions are important in ensuring that we can optimize learning opportunities for students. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated.

Your Community Cares – Schools Video
Project/Competition “A Day in the Life of ...”
Your Community Cares (a Federally funded community support program) and the Wakool Shire Council has invited all Wakool Shire schools (including Koondrook & Murrabit) to take part in a documentary making project we are calling “A Day in the Life of...”. Here are a few dot points to explain the idea:
Your Community Cares (YCC) will supply a Flip Digital Video Camera to each school in the Wakool Shire Council area and surrounding districts – High Schools and Primary Schools (eight schools in total).
Each school will choose students who would like to make a three minute documentary about a local food producer (e.g. citrus, rice, stone fruit, grapes etc) or a local artist.
All the documentaries must be completed by 30 April and will be screened in May 2010 at a special showcase event (location and date to be confirmed – watch this space…)
There will be winners chosen from the documentaries e.g. a People‟s Choice - Schools and a YCC Best Documentary. The winning school/s will be given an educational software package of their choosing (to the value of $1,000)!
The Wakool Shire Community are also invited to take part! We would also like to invite interested community members to take part in the project, so please contact Jane Sommersby on 0437-190-008 or via email at [email protected] if you would like to enter your own 3 minute documentary for your chance to win a Flip Video Camera. RSVP: Please get back to Jane if you are interested in participating in this fantastic project by Friday 5 March 2010 - on 0437-190-008 or via this email [email protected] .

horses. She is happy to be placed anywhere and is hoping to make life long friends.

some home cooked Italian cuisine.
