About Chicago Children’s Choir
Chicago Children’s Choir (Josephine Lee, President and Artistic Director) is a non-profi t organization that inspires and unites youth from diverse backgrounds to become global citizens through music. Founded in Hyde Park in direct response to the Civil Rights Movement in 1956, CCC has grown from one choir into a vast network of in-school and after-school programs serving 5,200 students across the city of Chicago.
CCC has impacted the lives of more than 50,000 diverse youth throughout its 63-year history. Since its founding, CCC has focused on building programs that refl ect the racial and economic diversity of Chicago. Eighty percent of youth served are from low-moderate income homes, with over 4,000 students annually participating completely free of charge. All singers in CCC programs receive some level of subsidy. High school seniors enrolled in CCC have a 100% graduation and college acceptance rate, becoming global ambassadors who carry on CCC’s core values in a wide array of professional fi elds.
Under the leadership of President and Artistic Director Josephine Lee, Chicago Children’s Choir has achieved new heights and revolutionized the youth choral arts through innovative, creative partnerships and new artistic endeavors. Recent projects include the world-premiere hip-hop musical Long Way Home, written and directed by the renowned Q Brothers Collective, which played to fi ve sold-out houses in 2018; performance in a new staged production of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS under the direction of Marin Alsop in July 2018 and 2019 with two frequent creative partners: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Ravinia Festival; and collaboration on Chance
the Rapper’s debut studio album The Big Day (2019) as well as a collaboration on his GRAMMY Award-winning Coloring Book (2016) studio recording and tour performances. CCC has served as a model for youth choirs across the country including Boston Children’s Chorus, Denver Children’s Choir and Indianapolis Children’s Choir.
As a national and international touring ensemble, Chicago Children’s Choir has performed throughout the United States, in Cuba, South Africa, India, Argentina, Uruguay, Korea, Canada, Japan and Europe and for dignitaries such as former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, former Chinese President Hu Jintao, former South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso.
CCC has performed with or for acclaimed artists such as Renée Fleming, Denyce Graves, Kathleen Battle, Luciano Pavarotti, Samuel Ramey, Yo-Yo Ma, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Enrique Iglesias, Quincy Jones, Al Green, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling, Celine Dion, Eddie Vedder, Common, Donald Lawrence and Beyoncé. CCC has recorded on multiple labels including James Ginsburg’s Cedille Records (Songs from Spoon River, 2009) and has released six studio recordings under its own label —Harmony Anew (2018), We All Live Here (2016), Holiday Harmony (2010), Songs on the Road to Freedom (2008), Sita Ram (2006) and Open Up Your Heart (2004).
The Englewood Neighborhood Choir, under conductor Lonnie Norwood, is one of Chicago Children’s Choir’s 11 after-school Neighborhood Choir Programs. These programs provide beginning and intermediate choral training to over 900 children throughout the city while building community pride and stewardship in each singer. Members of the Englewood Neighborhood Choir range in age from 8-16 and rehearse twice weekly. Recent tours have included Detroit and Wisconsin.
About Lonnie Norwood Jr., Conductor
Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Lonnie Norwood, Jr. grew up with an unquenchable passion for music and community service. He knew early on that both would be integral parts of his life’s work. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Luther College where he studied under world-renowned conductor, Weston Noble. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Voice from Florida State University. Upon completion of his education, Lonnie taught K-12 music in Leon County (Tallahassee) and Chicago area schools, both public and private. He has enjoyed numerous career highlights working as a versatile singer and arranger alongside artists such as Lizz Wright, Nona Hendryx, Nadine McKinnor, Ricky Dillard, Sweet Honey In The Rock and Chicago’s Youth In Unity.
Lonnie joined the artistic staff at Chicago Children’s Choir (CCC) as a conductor in 2012 and opened the vivacious Englewood Neighborhood Choir
(2013). His ensembles have performed at numerous city venues, including the Chicago Symphony Center, Museum of Science & Industry, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier and the McCormick Convention Center. They have done three national tours and have been featured on WGN Channel 9 and ABC 7 News respectively. Their most signifi cant work, perhaps, is in serving the community of Englewood through song at local churches, parks, shopping centers, block parties, schools and assisted living facilities.
In recent years, Lonnie has become more active as a choral clinician, helping educators and ensembles understand the historical signifi cance, vocal technique and the social justice aspects of gospel music and African-American spirituals. Recent work has included workshops with ensembles at The University of Chicago, teaching and singing with international ensemble Village Harmony throughout various provinces of South Africa, musical exchanges in Nassau, Bahamas with members of the Bahamas National Youth Choir and Bahamian musicians, BFli Young Artists Camp at ETA Theater Chicago and with SongRoots (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) teaching gospel and spirituals. He has also begun authoring articles along these lines of interests, including a recent work for the American Choral Directors Association’s Choral Journal (October 2018). Upcoming engagements include both a master class and guest lecture at Luther College on the Pedagogy of Gospel Music and The Practice of Representation in Music Education and being a guest performer with the City Soul Choir of Vancouver.
Every avenue of arts, outreach and advocacy Lonnie embarks on is credited to his church upbringing. He established Audacious Praise (AP) in 2015, a multicultural arts outreach organization creating accessible, inter-generational programming that impacts social and spiritual awareness in marginalized communities. Audacious Praise is best known for one of South Shore’s fi nest inspirational open mic showcases, Fresh Faith Fridays and have garnered great interest in its highly anticipated initiative, ChicaGO Reach Gospel Workshop (January 2020) to take place on the campus of The University of Chicago. He serves as lead musician and worship leader at Bryn Mawr Community Church in South Shore, under the direction of esteemed vocalist and conductor, Felicia Coleman-Evans.

HOW YOU MAKE IT POSS IBLE
VOICES$10,000 funds an In-School Program for one year. You have the opportunity to bring music education free of charge to students at one city school, meet their principal, and attend their concert.
$5,000 funds one Connection Day, a special workshop that brings together CCC students from different neighborhoods to learn new music and choreography while forging meaningful bonds with their CCC peers.
$2,500 funds an international tour scholarship, creating the opportunity for a CCC singer to experience the transformative power of travel and become an ambassador of our city and mission.
$1,000 allows CCC to subsidize tuition for one Neighborhood Choir singer from a low-income household. You have the opportunity to give that student access to a safe, nurturing after-school environment in their own community.
$500 funds one bus trip for 50 singers to special performance opportunities with collaborators like Ravinia Festival and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. You have the opportunity to make participation in special projects with world-class artists possible for all students by removing the transportation barrier.
$250 funds a complete uniform set for one Neighborhood Choir singer. You have the opportunity to bring the sense of pride and belonging that comes with wearing a CCC uniform to a singer who otherwise could not afford it.
$100 funds one binder of music for a Voice of Chicago singer. You have the opportunity to introduce that singer to music in over 37 languages and from a wide range of cultures, genres, and time periods.
