About Melissa
As an educator, both in Higher and Secondary Educational settings, my commitment
and focus has been on the achievement of all students. Excellences in education is
having the individual student rise and not just meet their challenges but empowering
them to succeed beyond the challenges they must face. To achieve this, an educator
must be committed to all students and creating an atmosphere where teamwork and
cooperation must be employed – Together we all can achieve more.
As an administrator, I have been charged with supervising peers. Never about the idea
of directing the team as much as setting goals and empowering the team to not just
reach but surpass those goals set. Doing more with less has been my mantra in every
work environment. Whether forming a Nationally Competitive and Championship team
of athletes, building a Spirit Program that increased the recruitment and retention of
students or leading teachers to employ curriculum and classroom design to engage
student learning I have set a high standard and met each goal.
At this point, I am ready for a new challenge and direction. In the next few pages I
intend to demonstrate and provide you with background information that will
demonstrate my readiness for the Education Manager, Florida Partnership Position.
Goals of the Florida Partnership with the College Board
In 2004, Florida Governor Jeb Bush signed Senate Bill 2184 which created the Florida
Partnership for Minority and Underrepresented Student Achievement Act. The purpose
of this Bill was to prepare students for post-secondary success with emphasis on
minority students and those underrepresented in postsecondary education. Thus, a
contract between the Florida Department of Education and College Board was
authorized (DOE Press Release, May 2004).
Since the implementation of the Bill, Florida has been out pacing the entire nation with
SAT results of minority students. African American students in Florida achieving higher
in the critical reading (+3) and math (+1) while Hispanic students out perform their
counterparts on all parts of the exam (Partnership PowerPoint). The program has been
successful in preparing students for the exams; however there is more work to be
accomplished in making these students successful college graduates.
Students enter college unprepared for the demands and expectations even though they
have met the admission standards resulting in the placement of remedial courses. This
is a direct area of focus for the Florida Partnership, one in which my skill sets meet the
challenge. The College Board has a wide array of programs to assist students and
teachers in accessing the learning needs of students (ACCUPLACER, ACES) as well as
the traditional programs (AP, CLEP) but a focus also needs to be placed on the
Executive Function skills of these students. The Executive Function skills focus on the
mental preparation of learning as well as teaching students “how to” learn. In my
experience with students, those who struggle the most have “gaps” in their learning
progression. This gap may arise from changing of schools, movement, and lack of
continuity among other areas or issues. Once they are aware of how they best learn
and are trained to learn using those skills these students develop a sense of confidence
and control. I believe my experience in understanding how and why students learn
would lend greatly to this position.

To whom it may concern:
Education has been the focus of my career path. Whether in the form of curricular or co-curricular education,
the development of the whole student is my primary objective. My experience in the classroom both in the
secondary and higher educational settings provides me with a unique combination and outlook on the
development of the total student. Understanding the complexities of the student-teacher relationship as well
as the concerns and choices administrators must make to provide applicable education to all students, I
believe my combined experience will enrich and promote the growth of Education Manager position for the
Florida Partnership.
My experience as an administrator in higher education has provided a strong background in working efficiently
with various departments, allocating not just financial accountability but time and resources in a responsible
manner. Effective communication is a key component to establish cohesive relationships with both colleagues
and clients. Serving on various committees both in the higher and secondary educational arenas has allowed
me to develop the tools needed to communicate and build working relationships with others.
As an educator, I understand the complexities and the demands students face both in the secondary and
collegiate environments. At the college level, I instructed students in a variety of courses, working with
academic counselors and tutors with their endeavors. I transferred this experience to working with high school
students and their development of executive function skills. Teaching students how they learn, along with
academic monitoring has provided successful results for the students. This unique combination of experience I
believe would enhance the Education Manager position.
I would welcome the opportunity to interview with your selection team and look forward to hearing from you
in the near future. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Melissa Hay
