When someone’s career is coming to a close, many memories resurface, particularly the pleasant ones. Peter Bruce, our science teacher and regular relief deputy principal, is experiencing those feelings of nostalgia now as he enters his last week of teaching starting today, after a stellar career spanning 40 years.

Mr Bruce’s teaching career began at Calista PS in 1979 and moved to Melville PS in 1987. He had several secondments away from the school in head office between 2006 and 2009 but returned to MPS to teach in the classroom then as our science teacher. I believe there are a few parents here who have been taught by Mr Bruce!

Apart from being a very knowledgeable science teacher, Mr Bruce played an important role in the planning and building of the present school from 2004 to 2005, so he leaves a lasting legacy. Please come and say your farewells to Mr Bruce throughout the week and especially on Friday.

The family and wider community support of our school never ceases to amaze me. You will remember the recent Lapathon was held in a 70 minute window of sunny weather on what had been a very wet day on 11th June. Today the P&C announced the final amount raised - $14 425! What an extraordinary amount of money. We are thrilled to announce this will pay for a new sound system which will be used indoor and outdoors. Performances up at Kadidjiny Park in the amphitheatre sounds very appealing.

A date for your calendar – the P&C will be running Carols on the Oval for the school community on Friday 13th December. More information will be available next term.

This week is very busy with Edu-Dance concerts today and Wednesday. Information was sent home via your children’s teachers and the office last week. The annual cross country races for years 3 to 6 will be held on Friday afternoon. This event will be postponed if the weather is severe, however if it is drizzling the event will be run. The call will be made Friday lunch time.

Congratulations to our year 6 winter games interschool competitors. Some great results from all teams.

A reminder that all enrolments for 2020 should be in by the end of July. This is especially important for kindy and pre-primary. Year 7 enrolments should in to the high schools by the end of this week. We are very proud of our many year 6 students who have got into special programs at a wide array of high schools for Gifted and Talented, academic extension, music, drama, media, visual art, aviation and various sports.

Have a wonderful winter holiday and for those who are travelling come back to us safely.

Farewell Mr Peter Bruce – we will miss you but we have many wonderful memories to remember you by.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL HEALTH NURSE - WINTER ILLNESSColdsUpper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help reduce the incidence.• Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards. (Sneeze into elbow if unable to wash hands).• Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.• Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)• Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.• Make sure that children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.• Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.

What to do if your child gets a coldNo treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:• Rest: This need not be in bed.• Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink very much, try giving lots of small sips of water, or ice blocks to suck for older children.Germs are spread easily within the classroom to staff and other students. Keep your child home if they cannot ;• Cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing• Wipe his/ her nose independently• Wash hands without help

HandwashingWashing hands is the easiest way to protect ourselves from contagious diseases, like colds, influenza and gastroenteritis. Hands should be washed before and after eating or preparing food, after going to the toilet and after nose blowing/sneezing.When teaching your child to wash their hands:• Use clean water and soap, making sure they cover their hands and wrists.• Use a brush to clean under nails if they’re dirty too• Dry their hands with something clean (like a paper towel)Alcohol based sanitizers can be useful when soap and water is not available. Use half a teaspoon of the product and encourage your child to rub their hands together until they’re dry. YEAR 5 DRAMA SHOWCASEOn Wednesday 19th June the year fives performed their drama showcase for parents and friends in library.

The drama showcase explored the theme “What makes us laugh?” with every student taking on a role in a short comedy sketch. With loads of misunderstandings, disguises, punch lines, absurd characters and ridiculous situations I think we achieved our mission… to make our audience laugh!

Well done to all of the students for their efforts.

I must say we’ve had some amazing adventures in the Veggie Patch. Firstly I would like to say, “Thank you “ to the Melville School Community as I have received some beautiful donations for the garden and our assembly market stall. We raised over $60 which is amazing! Well done everyone, you are super stars! We have some wonderful pictures below to share. Thank you to Blend Cafe for all their wonderful coffee grinds they donated for our compost - the picture bottom left photos are the “Thank you Hamper” we delivered to them. The photo to the far right shows some grit and determination from J1 students wrestling with the celery on our “ Bunnings Garden Day”. We had a replanting day with a loads of donations from Bunnings we all got stuck in. Rachel, Sam, Doris (Bunnings) & myself helped a few classes get hands on in the garden. Everyone worked very hard and achieved a fantastic result. A massive thanks to Bunnings for their huge donation and their help on the day. Fun times were had by all. The ladies also mentioned they are very keen to come back and see one of our market stalls in action.Below centre are some great pictures of the “Worm Towers” that were made by students, all ready for our very first “Veggie Club” with Camp Australia. - Toni Cooling, Veggie Patch Coord
