PRESIDENT’SLETTER

THEIVYVINE

I just loved our January meeting! The observations, comments and ideas were so thoughtful, encouraging, fresh and exciting that I am now completely reinvigorated and looking forward to allthings LGC, new, old and reimagined!

And we have plenty to be energized about, starting with our February joint meeting at Crosstown Concourse. This project, believed impossible by so many, is coming to completion and has already begun lifting a blighted neigh-borhood out of the depths to soaring new heights. The energy and joy sur-rounding Crosstown complements the growth and renewal going on all around our city. It’s a great time to be

a Memphian! I’m especially looking forward to riding the bus (yep, I said it again!) as I know the conversation will be rich and enlightening. See you at theMemphis Botanic Garden bus stop on February 9!

By now everyone who attended the or-chid workshop at Ruthie’s will be bring-ing their flailing orchids back to life - what a wonderful way to start the new year with renewal and restoration! Our Zone lX meeting in Natchez is March 21-23, and we’re going to need lots of Horti-culture so start thinking about the beautiful blooms and plants you may want to enter. Sally and EJ are preparing a fabulous flower arrangement, and we’ll all be heading to Natchez before you can say “Spring is here!!”

I’m so happy to be on this journey with you all, learning and sharing experiences togeth-er. Scott Morris, founder and CEO of Church Health, puts it this way with a quote of John Wesley’s ... ”If your heart is like my heart, thengive me your hand.” What a blessing that we can join our hearts and hands while we learn, grow and give back with a sense of purpose and joy! CROSSTOWN CONCOURSEOriginally the Sears Roebuck and Co. distribution center and retail store, this 1.5-million-square-foot building sat vacant for decades until a group of visionary leaders dreamed up a plan to transform the building into a focal point for Mem-phis.

Rebranded the Crosstown Concourse, the development has become a mixed use project anticipated to create 800 jobs and $37 million in new wages. Agents of good health, healing, arts and education comprise the group of tenants who will be part of a “vertical urban village” forging a new future for the building and the surrounding area. Tenants include Church Health, A Step Ahead, CBU, The Curb Market, Crosstown Arts, Crosstown High, Methodist, St. Jude, Memphis Teacher Residency and the Kitchen Next Door to name a few, though not all, of the people and businesses coming together to be Crosstown Concourse.

We will have the opportunity to tour this amazing facility and see first hand how true sustainability comes from the relationships between the tenants and the or-ganizations sharing this unique and historic space. We’ll hear from Dr. Scott Morris, CEO of Church Health, its new name and new brand that reflects its larger mission. Dr. Morris is one of the original pioneers of the project. CH is considered its anchor tenant, occupying 150,000 square feet of the space.

This is also a unique chance for us to see the conservation and horticulture efforts underway at Crosstown Concourse. We’ll see you on February 9, 2017 as Cross-town makes history in Memphis!

For further information on Crosstown Concourse and Church Health, view the video links below:

We really look forward to seeing everyone at this meeting!

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone is refreshed for the New Year and is excited about photography. There are a lot of upcoming flower shows, and photography is a fun, easy way to enter. The GCA website has all of the information on it. Go to the GCA website, sign into the member’s area, click on GCA Committee Pages, then Flower Shows, then Flower Show Committee. When you get to the Flower Show Committee page, then click on Upcoming Flower Shows, in the right hand box, and it will take you to the complete list. A few of the big shows that are juried are: Boston Mass Hort, Florescence in Houston and Maryland, which is the Annual Meeting. The Flower Show schedules tell you exactly how to email and enter in. If someone has a photo they want to enter and they have questions, they can call Vance or Tempe for help. Here are just a few reminders for what is coming up in flower shows:

1. Boston Flower Photography Division, Juried show, registration deadline is January 20th.

2. Florescence Waves, Juried show, registration closes January 21st. If you have registered for Florescence in the past then your user name is your email and your password is FloHouston2017.

3. GCA Annual Meeting, Juried show, registration deadline is Feb. 24th. They really need entries from our zone. WINTERTIME COLOR IN THE GARDEN

Do you have a favorite shrub??? Well, I must admit that I do. In 1996, the year my grandmother died, my good friend in Charlotte, NC, gave me Daphne odora (common name: Winter Daphne) and I have never been without a Daphne in that same protected location since. While most everything in the garden is quiet this time of year Daphne is the first sign of color emerg-ing in January and February. Here it is now in January and then from my photo library in February. Fragrant and bursting with the most vibrant fuchsia it almost seems unnatural in February!

Once the daffodils start emerging the blossoms as if on que are opening into the most beautiful soft shade of yellow. The hel-lebores are blooming underfoot and welcome to the month of February!

While I would not recommend Daphne for Memphis — I would, however, recommend my new #2 favorite, Edgeworthia chrysantha (common name: paperbush) and coincidentally it is from the same plant family, Thymelaeaceae, as Daphne.

Several years ago in February I was at the Dixon and fell in love with this deciduous shrub carrying the most interesting white and yellow blossoms. Once again the garden was quiet and yet this fragrant shrub was putting on quite a show! With our light dusting of snow this week the white blossoms just look like big balls of snow hanging in mid air. This shrub truly brings me so much joy looking out my kitchen window every day.

The leaves in the summer are a lush deep green and you will not be disappointed in this shrub for the woodland garden. The Dixon will have a limited amount of Edgeworthia at the spring plant sale April 7 & 8…I will be there buying my third one!

Dale Skaggs reminded me that Double flowered Lenten roses are good winter flowering plants. I have also added these little jewels each year—reliable and lovely. Witch hazels, camellias, winter jasmine, mahonia, winter honeysuckle are all plants with winter interest that will be at the Dixon Plant Sale.

Look for updates in our next newsletter what to expect from the Memphis Botanic Garden Plant Sale April 21 & 22—Rick Pudwell said they are having lots of new additions! Do not rush springtime…savor these winter months!

Paul Garner, of the Memphis Orchid Society gave us some great tips! Gina, Sue, Mary Call, Chris, Eva Mae, Jean and Lucia soaked up his knowledge and below are a few things we learned.

• Orchids need 50% humidity and medium light.• Water “weekly/weakly” with tepid or lukewarm

water—never on top of the stem but around the top base with 1/4 strength fertlizer (Miracle Gro is fine). The water should have a slight blue tint. 20-20-20 or 15-15-15 with balanced nutrients. You can also take the pot and set in gravel filled tray filled with water for humidity. An Orchid plant should never be placed in water as it will kill the plant. You can fertilize very other week.

• Do not use ice cubes in your orchid—this will cause freeze damage.

• If you touch the leaves and they radiate warmth then you have them in a spot that is too sunny.

• Sterilize your scissors before cutting—wipe them clean with rubbing alcohol. You can dab a bit of cinnamon on the cut for a good fungicide (We will be selling great scissors at Happenings!)

• Orchids like to be root bound and tight…if you repot use Chilean or New Zealand moss; fir or spruce bark are also good for potting. Do not put them in a pot that is too big.

• To clean the leaves and to give them a sheen use milk and apply with a sponge or cheesecloth.

• The decorative pots at Kroger or a florist are good for looks but do not have a drainage hole--the plastic container should later be transferred to a clay pot with a drainage hole.

• Any insects on your houseplants??? 1/2 strength 409 works great.
