Throughout the last several decades, the average American’s life expectancy has increased significantly. Statistics show that in 2011 there were 5.7 million people 85 or older; by 2040 that number is expected to be 14.1 million.

Advances in medicine and technology, as well as growing awareness of healthy lifestyle practices, mean that Americans not only live longer, but they also live better.

However, as the population ages, needs change and senior living communities are becoming a vital partner in addressing those needs. The decision to relocate to a senior living community is not easy. However, making that choice offers a number of important benefits, including physical, emotional, social and mental stimulation, as well as the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supervised environment. Currently, approximately one million Americans live in some type of senior living facility and an anticipated two million seniors will reside in such communities by 2030.

Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, with costs soaring past a quarter of a trillion dollars.

▪ In 2017, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer’s will total an estimated $2 59 billion. ▪ Average per-person Medicare spending for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is more than three times higher than average per-person spending across all other seniors. Medicaid payments are 23 times higher. ▪ Unless something is done, in 2050, Alzheimer’s will cost $1.1 trillion (in 2017 dollars). ▪ Nearly one in every five Medicare dollars is spent on people with Alzheimer’s. In 2050, it will be more than one in every three dollars.

Alzheimer’s kills – and deaths have nearly doubled in the last 14 years. ▪ Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United

States and the 5th leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older. ▪ Deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 89 percent from 2000 to 2014, while deaths from other major diseases (including heart disease, stroke, breast and prostate cancer, and HIV/AIDS) decreased. ▪ Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is exceptionally demanding. ▪ In 2016, more than 15 million family members and friends provided 18.2 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s

Dealing with Agitation and Anxious Behaviors:1. Step away for a moment and then converse with the resident using calm, positive affirmations.

2. Reassure the resident by slowing yourself down.

3. Add additional light and space if possible.

4. Offer guided choices between two options.

5. Focus on pleasant memories and events.

6. Limit stimulation.

7. Genuinely listen to their frustrations and find out what may be causing the behavior.

8. Provide reassurance using calming phrases.

9. Involve the resident in his/her leisure choices engag-ing them and diverting attention away from the behav-ior.

10. Modify the environment. Decrease noise and dis-tractions, or relocate.

11. Find outlets for the resident’s energy. They actually may be looking for something to do that you would never have thought to offer.

12. Check yourself. Do not raise your voice, show alarm or offense, or corner, crowd, restrain, criticize, ignore or argue with the resident.

13. Take care not to make sudden movements out of the resident’s view.

14. Share your experience with other Recreation/Activity Professionals by joining national/state/local associations, search online support community and message boards, and share what response strategies have worked for you.

15. Most residents function better during a certain time of day; typically mornings are best. Consider the time of day when making appointments or scheduling

large social events. Choose a time when you know the resident is most alert and best able to function at his/her best.

16. Take a break. If the resident is in a safe environ-ment and you are able, walk away and take a moment for yourself; breathe!

17. If the resident is unable to calm down, seek assis-tance from other professionals.

18. Celebrate small successes and occasions.

19. Find ways that each resident can contribute to community life and be sure to recognize his/her contributions.

20. Provide reassurance that the resident is loved, re-spected and appreciated as part of his/her new family, and not just for what she/he can do now.

21. Reassure the resident that he/she will not be aban-doned. There will always be “that resident” who denies that he/she is having any problems with agitation and anxious behaviors, making it that much harder for the Recreation/Activity Professional to know what the individual is truly dealing with each day.

“An Elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to bore-dom.” ~ Eden Alternative, The Ten Principles, Princi-ple #5 The following “ABC List” offers suggestions to help support the “magic of the season” and encourage residents to feel both included and appreciated and hopefully reduce their anxious/anxiety levels:

*Caroling – there’s nothing better than ushering in the holiday with the beautiful rhythms and melodies of the season.

*Church Events – churches and synagogues are filled with a variety of festive events and happenings during the season.

*Cooking – holiday foods/treats; and don’t forget to include the resident in the distributing process of the goodies to healthcare team members, families and friends.

*Crafts – a special time to “work the hands and minds”.

*Decorating, Gift Wrapping and Lighting – brings new colors and themes throughout the community.

*Event Planning – have the resident feel productive and full of purpose by making him/her the party orga-nizer! His/her opinion is important. More specific, let the resident delegate tasks to you! *Friends – it’s easy to neglect friends throughout your life, and the same happens with our residents. Take the time to call some of your residents’ friends and get them together during the holiday season. No one relates better to the elderly than the elderly.

*Shopping – it’s always exciting to get outside “the walls” of the healthcare community and become part of the “holiday crowd”.

*Volunteering – Giving back to others is one of the most important principles of Eden Alternative: “An Elder-centered community create opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the antidote to helplessness.” ~ Principle #4h

REVIEWS FROM CARING.COM

My dad is at Oasis at Dodge Park in Worcester, MA. He has been there for just over one year. We are grateful every day that he is in Oasis. It’s the most AMAZING care facility I have ever seen. He is treat-ed with respect, kindness, dignity, love and compassion every single day by every single caregiver. The place is brand new, beautiful, open, immaculately clean, fresh, and like a 5 star hotel. The activities are well planned and well staffed. His room is beautiful and uncluttered. The staff and owners are fabulous. The owners even give you their personal cell phone numbers to call it anytime. The food is good too. My father is very happy there. He had some health issues that have resolved since he’s been there. Of course it’s late stage dementia why he has remained there but some smaller health issues and diet issues have all resolved. I’m happy because we checked out a number of other places before we found Oasis and some of them I would have rated straight across 0, straight across terrible or whatever it may be or in different varying ranges but Oasis is straight across 5 stars for everything. We are planning that this is his home permanently.

Excellent! Oasis at Dodge Park provide much more care than a regular assisted living. They have RNS now. My mother is given medication that she needs. She’s seen by her doctor regularly. She has Alzhei-mer’s. Also, a geriatric psychiatrist comes down on a regular basis. They’re good on medication, so she’s up every day, she’s bathed, she’s well-dressed she gets 3 meals a day. I have been there, and sometimes I’m always there when there’s a meal. I had the meal myself and it’s delicious. It’s owned by two private owner/operators that are right there on staff every day. I looked at dozens of assisted living and other care facilities. It just happened they owned one across the street that’s called Dodge Park Rest Home, and it was just opening exactly a year ago. My mother was one of the first to move in. It’s a beautiful facility. Compare to the place that she was before, this home is better. Her symptoms are constantly changing and they’re monitoring and changing the medication. She’s incontinent at this moment, but they still managed to keep her well-dressed and make sure she’s changed within at least an hour. I’m very impressed. I am extremely fortunate to have found it. The two owners make an effort to know all of the residents and their families. They go out of their way to make sure that any concerns are taken care of right away.

Memory care at Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park:

Where everyone knows your name I magine a place where individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia feel right at home. Imagine a place where they can regain a sense of fulfillment. Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park on Randolph Road in Worcester are just such a setting. The facilities’ N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program (from the Hebrew for “soul to soul”) strives to help those strug-gling with memory loss at any stage to build and maintain cognitive ability. Based on research from a variety of recent studies, Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis’s specially designed program is comprised of six pillars of activities in which memory care resi-dents and their families join in. These include Physical Exercise, Stress Reduction, Cognitive Exercise, Specialized Digital Programs, Purposeful Social Activities and Support Groups and Resident Council. Resident-centered care is at the cornerstone of the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program at Dodge Park and Oasis at Dodge Park. Caregivers, staff and the management team are specially

trained to focus on the strengths of each person and to understand a resi-dent’s preferences, accomplishments and family ties. Each resident’s pref-erences and life story contribute to the individualized care plan and activi-ties they take part in, from dining choices to daily activities and specialized care. Oasis’s Activity Coordinator Amy Bustin says: “One of my favorite activities at Oasis at Dodge Park is our Reminiscing Program. Here the residents and caregivers share their personal stories. We use this time to learn about each other and recall experiences from the past. A simple question of ‘where did you grow up?’ brought up old memories for one resident and we were soon talking about summers at ‘the World’s Fair’ in St. Louis. For residents, re-calling the past is important as their disease can rob them of these moments. Care-

givers in turn have been able to learn about the lives of the residents. Using these tools has seamlessly turned my resi-dents from the people I assist to those who feel like family. I feel blessed to know each of them. “In my experience, music has been one of the most pow-

erful tools we have in the memory-care program. One resident could not recall how many children they had but was able to sing all of the words to ‘God Bless America’ with me. I have used sing-a-longs many times to redirect those that are upset. The familiarity of the music is comforting while sharing the song experience creates a bond between residents and the aides. A quiet room can quickly be filled with ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ or ‘Grand Ol’ Flag.’ The variety of music pro-grams we have each week is engaging—from drum circle to upbeat aerobics to quiet background music early in the morning. Music has become one of the best ways to make connections on a daily basis.” www.oasisatdodgepark.com https://dodgepark.com 877-363-4775 508-853-8180

‘We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis’ Judy Atkins Bath’s mother Nancy Atkins has been a resident at Oasis at Dodge Park since just after the facility opened in 2017 and is thriving in the environment due in large part to the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program. “What works best for my mom,” Ms. Bath said, “is the music that’s offered, which brings back memories of entertainers she enjoyed when she was younger: Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Roger Whitaker. We have a little player in her room too. When the music starts, she is in the front row center and singing and very happy and engaged with it. When Bill McCarthy announced ‘this one’s for you, Nancy, and broke into Que Sera Sera (‘Que sera, sera/whatever will be, will be/the future’s not ours to see/Que sera, sera/what will be, will be’), she loved it. It is just wonderful for Oasis’s staff and (Activity Director) Amy Bustin to do this. Amy’s great, dancing and clapping with the residents. We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis.” `Mom is doing fabulous at the Oasis’ Lisa Swalec’s mother Margaret Leroux—”Judy”—benefits immensely from the affection showered on her by an Oasis staff that is “compassionate and patient,” Ms. Swalec says. “She was at home with twenty four-hour care for two years. Oasis gives her more socialization than she was getting. My father was briefly at Dodge Park before he died. The amaz-ing thing is the music, Saturday nights and Sunday after-noons. The whole facility is memory care and residents are allowed to move about; they are not confined to one wing.”

History Of You Are My Sunshine SongThe Most Popular Song in the United StatesIt really is quite understandable why at least one person in almost every American Family knows the song You are my Sunshine, as this song is one of the most commercially programmed songs in the United States. It has been recorded over 350 times by a veritable who is who of singers, including such big names as Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Willie Nelson. Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. It has been the background music of many movies. It is also one of the most often taught songs in children’s music classes and is a mainstay of young children’s music videos and CDs.

History of You Are My Sunshine SongNo one knows for sure who actually wrote the original version of You are my Sunshine. Claims have been made that an unnamed woman in South Carolina wrote the song, while other claims that a country singer by the name of Oliver Hood was the composer. Paul Rice who actually with his brother made the second known recording of the song also claimed to be the composer, he later sold the song to Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell, who have become the accepted writers of the song, even though they actually bought it from Rice. Jimmie Davis did make a recording of the song in 1940 and it became instantly popular, although there were two groups that earlier hadrecorded the song in 1939. Paul Rice and his brother, and prior to them The Pine Ridge boys recorded the song. Regardless it was Davis and Mitchell who ended up getting credit for the songs lyrics, and Davis made the most of the song’s popularity using it when he ran for Governor of Louisiana both in 1944 and again in 1959.

You Are My Sunshine TodayToday the song is still almost instantly recognizable by most Americans. Many children grew up having their parents sing this song to them, and in turn sang it to their infants. It is also a song often sung by one lover to lover, husbands to wives, and wives to husbands. While the song itself is about love and loss, the memories this song evokes in most people are love, happy childhood, falling in love, and the simple joy of being together. While much more modern music may be requested at social events, and played on CDs Ipods and even the radio, You are my Sunshine is still often sang in home when a parent is rocking a young child, busily doing dishes, or to a loved one or spouse during special and even not so special times.

Activity suggestion: Read about the history and then play the different versions of the song listed and discuss how each version is different, the style of music, and the feelings with each piece. Reminisce about the song and when the participant had first heard it.

Art Inspiration - Garden LightsMaterials• Old Light Bulbs• Nail Polish (various colors) Don’t forget the outrageous colors

like yellow and orange- they make greatdecorations!• Large Bowl• Water• Toothpicks• Craft Wire• Beads• String• Scissors• Display hooks- one for each bulbDirections:1. Clean the outsides of the light bulbs. Wipe dry.2. Use the scissors and string to create a taut line between two chairs. Knot the string around the handles of each chair

and move the chairs apart until the string is taut. This will be a handy space for the bulbs to dry.3. Wrap the bottom of the bulb with craft wire a couple of times and clip the wire so that a few inches are straight and

not wrapped around the bulb. This will be handy for hanging the bulb when it needs to dry after step 8. *To prevent the end from being pokey or sharp, bend the straight wire into a small hook shape, turning over the area where the wire was clipped.

4. Fill a large bowl with water.5. Pour a drop of nail polish into the bowl of water. The polish will separate from the water and float at the top.

*Start with only one drop!6. Repeat step 3 with each different nail polish color you would like to use. Three of four colors often work best.7. Pick up a toothpick and use it to move the lines of color floating on top of the water. This will create a lovely

marbled look!8. Pick up a light bulb and gently roll it on the surface of the water. Try moving in different directions to create

different patterns.9. Lift the bulb off of the surface of the water and let it drip dry into the bowl. You will see that some of the lines of

color will have adhered to the bulb.10. Hang the bulb to dry by hanging the hook on the bulb from a taut piece of string.11. Repeat steps five through ten until you have used all of the light bulbs.12. Remove the dry bulbs from the line of string.13. Unwrap the craft wire from the bottom of the bulb.14. Tie a piece of string to the bottom of the bulb. This will be how you hang the bulbs in your garden (or indoors for

decoration). Wrap the string around the bottom of the bulb and knot multiple times to ensure the bulb doesn’t fall after it is hung. Always check the bulbs after a hard rainstorm or windy day- they may need new string.

15. String beads onto the bulb string.16. Tie a craft hook to the top of the string securely.

Simple tips for a healthier heartClose to 2,200 people die each day in the United Statesbecause of cardiovascular problems. That’s one every40 seconds. Here’s some advice from the WMC Action News website on how to keep your heart healthy:

• Laugh a lot. Laughter dilates your blood vessels, increases blood flow, and lowers your blood pressure.

• Snuggle. Hugging releases oxytocin, a hormone thatrelieves stress and can reduce blood pressure.

• Get a pet. A University of Maryland study found thatsurvivors of a heart attack who had a dog were eighttimes more likely to be alive a year after their attack.

• Get the right amount of sleep. Both oversleepingand getting less than six hours of sleep a night raisesyour heart attack risk. Aim for about eight hoursevery night.

• Drink coffee. Studies suggest that caffeine canstabilize your heart rhythm if you have an abnormalheart rate. Check with your doctor.

• Move around. Standing and moving around onehour per day can reduce cardiovascular disease riskin women by 25%, according to a University ofCalifornia, San Diego, study.

Health benefits of the avocadoAvocado toast is a thing, but whether you think it’s an overhyped millennial trend or not, research suggests that it’s good for you— the avocado part, at least.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition and reported in an article on the Bicycling website found that eating one avocado a day is associated with signifi-cantly lower levels of types of LDL— the bad cholester-ol—in adults who are overweight or obese. In addition, avocado also improves levels of lutein, an antioxidantassociated with heart health, by more than 68%, and one avocado supplies about half of the dietary fiber that fights heart disease you need every day. So go ahead—have another slice of avocado toast.

MONEY MATTERS

Don’t make these investment mistakesA good financial advisor is crucial to saving yourmoney and investing it wisely. If you try to doeverything yourself, you could wind up making theseexpensive mistakes, as noted by the Business Insiderwebsite:

• Relying on information that’s out of date. Be waryif a friend touts a press release from 2018, somethinghe or she heard on the radio last month, or a websitepost that’s years old. Markets change quickly, so youdon’t want to invest using last year’s strategy.

• Not checking your data. Even if the informationseems current, don’t trust everything you read.Check multiple sources of information to confirmthat what you’re seeing is accurate before makingany financial decisions.

• Trusting blindly. Your brother-in-law and yourbest friend might be great people, but that doesn’tmean they really understand the stock market. Take“hot tips” with a grain of salt, and consult with anexpert instead of relying on pals.

• Chasing trends. Too many companies start out witha splash and then quickly tank. Think about the longterm, not an immediate payoff. “Boring” companiesmight not make you rich today, but they’re morelikely to stick around and provide reliable returnsthat can add up.

• Acting impulsively. You get a tip on a stock or seecoverage of an exciting new company on TV. Don’timmediately tell your broker to start buying upstock. Take a deep breath, do your homework, andthen make a reasoned decision.

Leaving money to charity?Consider this adviceMany people leave money to charities in their will. It’sa good way to support good people and a good cause, but you should be careful when making your choice. The Good Housekeeping website has this advice:

• Plan with care. Think about everyone you want toleave your money to. If you donate to a charity, willthere be enough money left for your children andother people you want to benefit? Talk to yourfamily so everyone knows what’s going on, butremember that this is your decision.

• Choose the right charity. Think about groups thathave helped you, that you’ve volunteered for, andthat you respect and admire. When you’ve settled onone or two, contact them and ask some questions, orvisit a local office if possible. Make sure the charity islegitimate and will use your money the way youwant.

• Talk to a financial counselor. Discuss the ins andouts of inheritance tax law so your money will bedistributed without leaving anyone with a sizable taxbill.

• Update your will. Explain to your lawyer what youwant to do. He or she will guide you through theprocess of amending your will so your money willgo where you want it to go.

GRINS & GIGGLES

The treatment planAfter reviewing the lab work of a patient who’d justfinished an annual exam, the doctor said, “I’m havingthe nurse write out these instructions for you, but Iwill tell them to you now.

“First thing every morning, I want you take one ofthese red pills with a full glass of water,” the doctorsaid as he handed the patient a bottle of pills.

“A half-hour before lunch, you must take this bluepill with a full glass of water,” the doctor said, holdinganother bottle of pills that he shook before handingthem to the patient.

“Now listen carefully, so you don’t get confused,”the doctor said as he reached into his lab coat pocketand pulled out another bottle of meds. “After lunch, you are to take one purple pill with a full glass ofwater. Did you get that?”

“Yes,” the patient replied. “Blue before lunch, purple afterward, and red first thing in the morning.”

“And a full glass of water with each dose,” thedoctor said. He retrieved yet another bottle of pillsfrom his pocket. “Take one green pill every evening, after dinner, with . . .?”

“A full glass of water,” the patient replied and thenasked, “Hey, doc, what’s wrong with me?”

“From what I can tell, you‘re in pretty decenthealth,” the doctor replied. “But you’re not drinkingenough water.”

Light the wayBecause of a big project deadline, the employees had been asked to work double shifts for the next few days.

“That’s it, I’m going home,” one employee said to hiscolleague.

“But there are three more hours left in our shift,” theco-worker replied.

“Well, I’m exhausted now. Come to think of it, I’ll taketomorrow off, too. Watch this,” the worker said as he

grabbed a lampshade and covered his head with it and stood atop a ladder in the center of the room.

The manager walked in, gasped, and said, “What on earth are you doing up there?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m a lightbulb,” the worker replied.

“Good grief,” the manager said. “You’ve worked so longyou’ve gone mad. Come down from there, and then take the rest of the day off. While you’re at it, take tomorrow off, too.”

The worker descended the ladder and began to walk away with the lampshade still on his head. His colleague decided to follow him out.

“Just where do you think you’re going?” asked the manager.

“I’m taking the rest of the day off, too,” the co-workerreplied. “I can’t work in the dark.”

Suggested readingAs the pastor finished his sermon he said, “For next Sunday, I want all of you to read Mark chapter 17. It’s going to tie in with the theme of my sermon.”

The next week as the pastor stood before the congre-gation, he said, “Let me see a show of hands for those of you who reviewed the suggested reading of Mark chapter 17?”

Every member of the congregation raised a hand.

“Well, amen, brothers and sisters,” the pastor respond-ed. “Now I want you to pull out your Bibles and turn to Mark 17. I’ll wait.”

The sound of ruffling pages began to fill the sanctuary. Members of the congregation whispered amongstthemselves.

“What’s that? You can’t find the passage?” the pastor asked. “That’s because Mark 17 doesn’t exist, and thatbrings me to the topic of today’s sermon—dishonesty!”

Beta-Glucans…What are they and what benefits do they provide?

Beta-glucans are carbohydrates, or sugars, found in the cell walls of some plants such as oats and barley. Beta-glucans are one form of fiber called soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is recommended by Registered Dietitians to help improve cholesterol levels. Scientific studies have examined the potential health benefits beta-glucans may have, particularly in the area of cholesterol and heart disease and diabetes.

Beta-glucans are also found in certain bacteria and fungi, including certain mushroom varieties. Researchers have been studying the positive effects of mushrooms on the immune system. As part of this physiology, research is also showing that beta-glucans have anti carcinogenic (cancer-preventing) activity.

Beta-glucans in oats is showing promise to significantly reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Because beta-glucans are a soluble fiber, they help slow down digestion in the intestines. This can be particularly beneficial for those with diabetes, as the slower carbohydrates are digested and broken down into glucose (sugar), the slower these sugars are absorbed, keeping blood sugar levels more stable. As beta-glucans travel through the digestive system they take cholesterol with it, keeping it from building up in the body which otherwise could end up contributing to clogged arteries.

Food labeling guidelines allow certain health claims to be used on food packaging. The effects the soluble fiber, including beta-glucans, has on cholesterol is one such allowance. Cereal advertisements, such as Cheerios commercials are using such health claim allowances to promote their food product.

Oats are an easy and delicious way to include beta-glucans into your diet. As a breakfast cereal, quick snack or even dessert such as a topping to an apple crisp, it’s a very versatile food. Add dried fruits to oatmeal to add even more nutrition. Sprinkle oat cereal on yogurt for a more satisfying and filling snack.

New Year Meal Makeover

We’ve eaten our way through Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We’ve had our fill of apple crisp, pumpkin pie and egg nog. Now it’s time to get back to taking care ofour health. That starts with taking a close look at how we eat and start making a few changes here and there to cut out some of the excess fat, sugar, salt and overall calories.

Adding more fruits and vegetables daily is a great start. Healthier eating doesn’t always mean taking foods out of your diet. Including more of the nutritious ingredientsnot only cuts out calories, it also adds in lots of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber. When choosing pro-duce, be sure to mix up the colors. Each color fruit or vegetable offers the consumer a different collection of health-promoting compounds. For example lycopene is what gives tomatoes their red color and studies have shownthat lycopene can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Carotenoids are what gives carrots their orange color and anthocyanin provide a purple color.

Bake, broil, grill or steam instead of frying. Frying, especial-ly deep-frying adds extra fat and calories into an otherwise potentially healthy food. Broiled fish filet with steamedvegetables is much healthier than deep-fried fish and chips. Baked chicken with mashed cauliflower is a much better choice than fried chicken with mashed potatoes. Steaming vegetables is a great way to preserve most of the food’s nat-ural nutrients while tempura vegetables adds a lot of fat and carbohydrate-laden batter.

The typical American diet is high in carbohydrates. Limit-ing your carbs is helpful when you want to reduce your cal-orie intake. A carbohydrate-free diet is unhealthy and canbe dangerous. Fruits and non-starchy vegetables are healthy examples of carbohydrates you want to include in your diet. Carbohydrates are our main source of fuel which is partic-ularly vital when adding an exercise program into your new year makeover. Whole grain carbs also provide us with fiber which is extremely important to a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some tips to cut down (not out) on the carbs:

• Use thin-sliced whole grain bread or 1/2 pita pocket for sandwiches

• Double the non-starchy vegetables/remove the starch on your plate

• Cut out the sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks• Choose quinoa instead of white rice• Iceberg lettuce leaves made a great wrap for your favorite

filling• Watch your portions. Use a 1/2 cup measuring cup

to make sure you’re not overloading on rice, pasta or potatoes

For more healthy new year meal makeover ideas try switch-ing to skim or 1% milk if you haven’t done so already. Include more meatless dishes into your menu. Fruits, unsalted nuts, veggie sticks with humus, butter-free pop-corn and yogurt make great snacks.

A healthy new year meal makeover doesn’t have to mean turning the tables 100% on your old habits but it’s important to keep health in mind to reduce risks of disease anddisability, especially as we age. Adopt some of these tips this season.

Help your tots stay activeThe Society for Health and Physical Educators(SHAPE) recommends that toddlers (age 12–36months) engage in 30 minutes of structured physicalactivity each day. SHAPE also recommends that totshave a minimum of 60 minutes of unstructured play/activity time—though more is strongly encouraged—and spend no more than 60 minutes sedentary unlessthey are sleeping.

These activities play a crucial role in your child’smotor development and movement experiences. Withregularity, these activities will also create a foundationfor your child’s fitness.

For parents and caregivers of young children theseactivities also provide opportunities to bond, be active, and get creative by exploring safe ways to keep ourlittle ones moving. Here are a few suggestions fromVerywell Family for playful structured activities youcan do with your tot:

• Exercise. Who knew that your little one is your bestworkout buddy? Sign up for a parent and child yogaclass. You might also scout out a toddler dance andtumbling class in your area, and if there isn’t one, host your own dance party at the same time eachday. (Remember the Chicken Dance and the HokeyPokey?) You can also make a game out of simpleexercises that you do along with your child. Havethem reach for the sky, bend over and touch theirtoes, or do jumping jacks.

• Games of hide and seek. Help children develop asense of adventure and exploration by giving themsomething to find. Hide and prompt your tot withclues by making noise so they will know where tofind you. You can set a timer or alarm clock andstash it behind a sofa pillow or some other area andhave your toddler figure out where the noise iscoming from. Easter egg and scavenger hunts areanother way to keep your tots engaged and movingaround.

• Fill and spill. Take a gallon or half-gallon plastic jugand fill it with items small enough to fit through theopening but large enough so they are not a chokinghazard. Consider using doll pins, the old-fashionedround top wooden clothespins made from a singlepiece of wood. Let your tot place the pins one byone into the jug, then turn it upside down and shakethem out, then refill the jug again. This might keepthem busy longer than you can imagine, and it alsoaffords them an opportunity to create the habit oftidying up.

There are any number of safe, fun activities youcan do with your toddler. Be creative and keep themmoving. To learn more about the activity guidelinesfor toddlers and all children under age 5, go to https://www.shapeamerica.org/standards/guidelines/activestart.aspx.

DODGE PARKREST HOME

The Bible presents growing old as a normal, natural part of life in this world. There is honor involved in the aging process, because growing old is normally accompanied by increased wisdom and experience. “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life” (Proverbs 16:31; see also Proverbs 20:29). God wants us to remember that life is short (James 4:14) and that the beauty of youth is soon gone (Proverbs 31:30; 1 Peter 1:24).

Jewish tradition emphasizes that taking care of a parent is a tremendous blessing and mitzvah. As the Talmud in Shabbat 127a says: “These are the fruits a person enjoys in this world, and continues to enjoy them in the World to Come. They are: honoring one’s parents…”

This is particularly true when the elderly have diminished physical and mental capacity, and are confronting their own mortality. But the task of taking care of them need not feel overwhelming.

Among the most disturbing aspects of growing old—especially in cultures that set a high value on rugged individualism— is the increasing frequency of senile dementia as human lifespan increases. It seems eminently unfair that people so afflicted should be robbed of their intellectual, emotional and social vitality while their physical bodies continue to survive. Alzheimer’s disease is a particularly difficult pill to swallow because the cause is unknown and it does not seem to be related to any particularly bad health habits. While progression of Alzheimer’s can be stalled, in part, by continued active involvement in mind-stimulating and physical activity, progression of the disease is nevertheless inexorable.

With Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia on the rise, finding quality care can be a challenge. Recognizing this challenge, The Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park developed a new program designed specifically to meet the needs of residents with memory loss. Based on years of experience caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents, Dodge Park and The Oasis at Dodge Park Programs partners with family members and care providers to develop a framework that supports the individual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of memory impaired residents through Cognitive, Fitness and Wellness design.

While there is currently no cure for most progressive forms of dementia, it doesn’t mean we’re powerless against them. Mounting research is building an understanding that there may be ways to slow the progression and change the pathologies of many common dementias, giving those afflicted with them and their families the possibility of more precious, fulfilling moments together.

2. Keeping ActiveMeaningful activities promote a sense of well being, provide enjoyment, maintain functioning levels and support independence. The daily program offers small and large group activities to appeal to each resident’s personal interests.

3. Worthy StaffTaking care of those with memory loss takes a special caregiver. The N’efesh to N’efesh Program staff is specially trained to work with residents to make their lives better by including activities and care that promote self-esteem, laughter, fun and enjoyment of everyday life. Caring for a family member with memory loss can be extremely difficult. In a community that serves residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the task of caring for a loved one is shared by many dedicated and highly-trained individuals. With the knowledge that a loved one is well taken care of, caregivers can enjoy more fulfilling time together.
