3june2009 STATION SIGNALS

Dear Friend,

As more and more people get their information online – and as we’ve all become aware of the need to “go green” and help protect our environment – we’ve come to an important decision about Station Signals. Starting next month, the kind of comprehensive radio and television program information provided by Station Signalswill be available on our website, WXXI.org.

A change in the way we communicate with our members was inevitable, as the cost of paper, printing and postage escalated over the year. Pushing us along was the painful state funding cut we suffered in Albany this year. Protecting our mission (and, of course, the programming you expect and deserve) was our top priority. We had already cut travel, equipment purchases, benefits and staffing. At the same time, we’ve been investing in WXXI.org and email communication. Every progressive organization is taking advantage of new media to expand its reach in programming, services and communication; WXXI is no exception.

This change will allow us to turn our attention to creating robust and engaging e-newsletters and other online services. Much of what you’ve expected each month from Station Signals will be there for you, including easily navigated schedules as well as highlights of upcoming events, programs and special member opportunities. Add to that expanded media from your favorite shows, and we are certain your online experience will make WXXI.org a destination in your daily life.

But we will not abandon you in print entirely. In place of Station Signals we will be producing a listings guide that will provide you with a monthly schedule of our three digital television channels, as well as Classical 91.5, AM 1370 and WRUR-FM 88.5. In July, all members will receive this new printed piece. But after July, you will need to contact our membership department to confirm that you’d like to continue receiving the listings by mail, or electronically by email. To make your request, please call (585) 258-0200 or send an email to [email protected].

This is just one way that will enable us to conserve funds without sacrificing the integrity of our programs and services. We’ve taken other measures to cut costs as well, including reductions in production expenses, printing, events, travel, and benefits and staffing. Audits have been conducted to ensure that WXXI is on the best and most cost-effective energy plans.

In fact, we were again recognized by Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity evaluator, with their highest rating, four stars. Only 19% of charities and nonprofits in the nation received a four-star rating for two years in a row. According to Charity Navigator, “WXXI Public Broadcasting Council consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America.” I was most pleased by these words in the letter, that WXXI’s ranking “demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

We’re doing everything we can to keep WXXI strong. Your support is part of that, and we greatly appreciate it. Remember, after this month, my letters will still be available at WXXI.org. I trust that you will continue to read them. There will even be a place for your comments online. I look forward to the exchange, and I hope these changes will help make you even more connected as a member of WXXI.

Best regards,

Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEOe-mail: [email protected]

Motown Records celebrates its 50th anniversary in June, and who better to kick off the festivities than the Motown Master himself, Stevie Wonder. Great Performances marks this monumental anniversary with a special telecast featuring the Grammy Award-winning artist in his fi rst concert performance recorded for television. GREAT PERFORMANCES “Stevie Wonder: Live at Last,” premiering Wednesday, June 3 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, presents Wonder in all his glory – performing such chart-topping hits as “Isn’t She Lovely,” “My Cherie Amour,” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).”

Introduced to the world at the age of 12 as “Little Stevie Wonder,” superstar Stevie Wonder may have dropped the “Little” since then, but certainly not his unique gift for a catchy melody, and his expert fusion of soul, funk, and R&B styles. Signed to Motown Records by Berry Gordy in 1963, “Little Stevie” rocketed to star-dom, producing nine, number one records and amassing a staggering 22 Grammy Awards over the course of four decades. In October 2008, he returned to Europe — after more than a decade — to perform to a packed house at London’s O2 Arena. Wonder, who pulls out all the hits, keeps the crowd on its feet and doesn’t miss a beat during this tour-de-force concert performance.PH

VisitRochester“ VisitRochester not only promotes the area as a place to visit, but also as an affordable destination for meetings and conventions.”

—Ed HallPresident, CEO, VisitRochester

VisitRochester promotes the greater Rochester area (Monroe County) as a place to visit, work, live, learn and do business. In addition to marketing Greater Rochester as a preferred destination to maximize visitor spending that enhances the economy, it also markets the area to local residents under the Rochester Made for Living brand. Originally founded as the Rochester Convention and Publicity Bureau, VisitRochester has been serving the Rochester area for 77 years. In 2008, nearly 2 million visitors, including convention and meeting attendees, generated more than $963 million in visitor economic impact in Monroe County! The convention sales and services team works with local contacts, which belong to regional, state, national and international organizations, to bring their meeting or convention to Rochester.

VisitRochester does not advertise on local commercial stations on a regular basis. Their primary budget is directed to out-of-town media. However, according to Ed Hall, President, CEO, “WXXI underwriting fi lls a unique niche in promoting civic pride to the local audience. The unique demographics of the WXXI listener/viewer played a signifi cant role in choosing to work with WXXI. Marketing with WXXI has been very cost effective. It’s a great deal, and a wise investment of marketing dollars.” Mr. Hall added that Morning Edition on WXXI AM 1370 is a personal favorite.

www.visitrochester.com is a great resource for planning activities and includes special offers and packages to hotels and attractions. June events include the following:

“I’ll miss programming the music,”admits Simon Pontin, who after 33 years of hosting Classical music on WXXI-FM signed off for the last time on May 16, 2009. “I really enjoyed putting music together in a way that I thought people would like, and that made sense to me. I’m not sure my audience always agreed with me.”

Pontin, the longest-tenured morning radio host in Rochester, joined Classical 91.5 in 1976, and during his distinguished time at the station, was producer and host of The Sunshine Show and Salmagundy, the Show for Working People. His love for Classical music began at an early age. “As a child I listened to the BBC, and they always played Classical music,” explains Pontin. That’s where he was fi rst exposed to the works of Mozart, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Copland and so many others.

Novelty songs is another love of Pontin’s, and his admiration for it inspired the creation of Salmagundy, the light-hearted and humorous magazine-style program featuring show tunes, novelty pieces and locally produced movie reviews, book reviews and musical commentary. “I love Classical music, and I don’t think Salmagundy took anything away from that,” he said. “But, that show was more my personality.”

Pontin was born in Reading, in Berkshire, England in the early days of World War II. He moved to America with his family when he was 16 years old. In the States, Simon worked at several printing-related jobs before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1959. In the service, he was trained to repair broadcast equipment. Upon being discharged, Simon took a job in a safety department at Eastman Kodak Company. While at Kodak, he moonlighted as host on WBBF-FM, then Rochester’s only Classical music station. He joined WBBF-FM’s successor, WBFB, full-time in 1971 and later became its program director. He left the station in 1975 when the format changed from all-Classical to all-news. After less than a year as a car salesman, he accepted a job with WXXI-FM as host of the morning show. Pontin enjoys traveling, gardening and entertaining his greyhounds, and plans to do more of it with his fi ancée Christy Simons. He has three adult children and, at last count, six grandchildren.”Mornings will never be the same,” said Brenda Tremblay, who is serving as interim host of the morning show, weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

HOW CHARITABLELEAD TRUSTS WORK

■ Investors transfer assets — money, artwork, securities or other property — to a trust for a term of years.

■ Each year, annual payments are made from the trust to a designated charity or charities. Payments can be a fi xed amount, or a set percentage of the trust’s value each year, depending on how the trust is structured.

■ For tax purposes, the IRS uses a set rate, often called the “hurdle” rate, to project the trust’s growth. This determines the taxable gift that will pass to heirs. But if the trust grows beyond that amount, the gains can pass to heirs tax-free.

■ To avoid gift-tax consequences altogether on the assets passed to heirs, investors can “zero out” the trust — that is, structure the annual charitable payments so that they equal the original value of the assets put into the trust.

CHARITABLELEAD TRUSTSThe current economy presents a rare opportunity for some people:By setting up a special trust, people can help WXXI, pass money to heirs and shelter potential growth from taxes.Under the strategy, called a “charitable lead trust,” you can transfer assets — cash and stocks among them — to a trust for a set term of years. Each year, payments are made from the trust to a designated charity such as WXXI. After the trust’s term expires, what’s left goes to your heirs. By moving the assets out of your estate, the strategy also shelters their potential appreciation from estate taxes.

What makes them especially attractive now is an historically low special rate that the Internal Revenue Service uses to predict how much your assets will grow in the trust. Estate-planning lawyers call it the “hurdle” rate because investment gains beyond it can generally pass to heirs tax-free. The rate, which is adjusted monthly, remains locked in for the length of the trust.

For information on including WXXI in your estate plans, please contact Kathy Russell Reed, Director of Major and Planned Giving at (585) 258-0319 or at [email protected].

■ Tell Us What You Think! Surveys, where kids can share their opinions and be heard by their peers.

■ Video segments, that feature a variety of subjects such as: New York State of Mine, Zoophily, Going Green, Healthy You, Getting Historical, Music Features, and Book Reports by Kids.

23june2009 STATION SIGNALS

On Friday, June 12 at 11.30 p.m. you will no longer be able to access TV over-the-air. By law, full-power television stations will turn off their analog transmitter and broadcast only digital signals. Television as we know it will change forever. But this change is good. DTV promises many great benefi ts that you’re sure to enjoy, including a crystal-clear picture, CD-quality sound, and best of all – more WXXI channels (see channel guide at right).

So are you ready? If you have cable, or subscribe to satellite TV, then you are! Your television signal will not be affected by the digital transition as long as you keep your cable or satellite subscription.

If you receive your TV signal through an antenna and you do not subscribe to a pay-TV service, then you will lose your television signal on June 12. You have one of three options to insure you don’t lose it:

1 Purchase a digital television converter box,

2 Subscribe to a pay-TV service, such as cable or satellite,

3 Or, replace your TV with a new digital tuner equipped TV. A wide range of DTVs is available starting at $100.00.

To learn morecall our DTV help center at 1-866-348-9994 or visit WXXI.org/dtv.

12 DAYS AND COUNTING

Still unclear about things?

Then be sure to tune in to WXXI-TV/HD on Thursday, June 11 at 8 p.m. for WXXI’s live, call in show, DTV 101: Get the Picture on the Digital Transition. In this program you’ll learn more about the benefi ts of digital television, whether or not you’ll be affected, and what you need to do to prepare. If you have question, you can ask during the broadcast by calling: 1-866-348-9994.

MYSTERYTRAINhosted by Mark Grube, is an eclectic musical journey where one genre rolls seamlessly into the next, linking artists and songs from the past and present in unique and interesting ways. From blues to bop, folk to funk and soul to swing, you’ll hear the most original and distinctive music sequenced to inspire a new appreciation for the familiar and a sense of anticipation for what’s over that next horizon.

“When I was fi rst planning out what Mystery Train would sound like, I wanted lots of different genres hooked up together like freight cars,” explains Grube. “But I didn’t just want to play songs at random. I wanted a reason for one tune to follow another.” Grube admits that some sets fall together easily, while others take days to prepare. “Most shows kind of end up going where they want,” he adds.

Mystery Train airs Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 12 midnight on WRUR-FM 88.5

Co-hosted by Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfi eld,On the Media explores how the media “sausage” is made, casts an incisive eye on fl uctuations in the marketplace of ideas, and examines threats to the freedom of information and expression in America and abroad. For one hour a week, the show tries to lift the veil from the process of “making media,” especially news media, because it’s through that lens that we literally see the world and the world sees us.

While maintaining the civility and fairness that are the hallmarks of public radio, On the Media tackles sticky issues with a frankness and transparency that has built trust with listeners and led to more than a tripling of its audience in fi ve years. PHOTO: RON PURDY

StoryCorps®

IS COMING TO ROCHESTER!StoryCorps, the national initiative to document everyday history and the unique stories of Americans, rolls in to Rochester on July 2, 2009. One of the largest oral history projects of its kind, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorp since the launch in 2003. The StoryCorps MobileBooth, an Airstream trailer out-fi tted with a recording studio that travels across the country, will be parked in Rochester through the month in July (visit storycorps.org for location details).

At the MobileBooth interviews are conducted between two people who know each other, with a trained facilitator guiding the participants through the interview process and handling the technical aspects of the recording. At the end of a 40-minute session, the participants walk away with a CD of their interview, and with their permission, a second copy becomes part of an archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for future generations to hear.

Interviews are by appointment only. A fi rst round of interview slots will open for reservations on June 18 at 10 a.m., and a second round on July 3 at 10 a.m. Reservations are free and open to the public. Individuals can visit www.storycorps.org or call 800-850-4406 to make interview reservations, listen to stories, and learn how they can support StoryCorps’ mission to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening.
