WXXI Program Listings, Membership Department,

program listings, special highlights and local news, just log onto WXXI.org.

DEAR FRIENDS,We are well into the final season of Downton Abbey and we hope you’re enjoying each and every episode. Downton continues to be one of our most popular Masterpiece presentations. Remember, if you miss an episode, you can watch it the next day online at video.pbs.org.

I also want to remind you about a new Member Benefit. If you are a WXXI member at the $60 level or above, you have access to WXXI Passport, a benefit that provides you with current and archival programs from PBS and WXXI. Passport allows you to watch some of our most popular programming on your computer, your tablet or even on your smartphone. It gives you special access to Downton Abbey, other dramas from Masterpiece, plus favorites such as Vicious, Makers, and The Great British Baking Show. If you contribute at the $60 level or more, you should have received an email last December giving details about Passport and a personalized passcode to access this service. If you missed the notice, or if you’d like to increase your membership gift to access this benefit, please feel free to call our Membership Department at 585-258-0200. They’ll be happy to assist!

February marks Black History Month, and WXXI is proud to present a variety of programs that spotlight the men and women who shaped the African-American experience. This includes the Little Theatre’s Black History Month Film Series, which kicks off with Spike Lee’s CHI-RAQ on Saturday, February 6, at 3 p.m. Additional programs on WXXI are spotlighted on the next page of this magazine, and a list of all of our programming can be found at WXXI.org/bh.

February is also the time for the annual Public Media Summit in Washington, D.C. I’ll be joining WXXI Board Members and colleagues throughout the nation for meetings with Members of Congress to explore issues that are vital to the direction and future of public media. Our meetings with Congressional leaders provide an opportunity to remind them how important federal funding is to our educational efforts and our future. The investment in public broadcasting is roughly one-hundredth of one percent of the federal budget, yet it’s a crucial source that helps stations present essential, engaging programming to a vast, underserved audience – and provides an educational safe haven for our youngest viewers.

Here in Rochester, thousands of parents – and tens of thousands of kids – rely on the 15 hours of non-commercial, non-violent children’s programming we broadcast every weekday. These shows have a fundamental educational message, helping children be Ready-to-Learn when they enter school. WXXI partners with local schools and BOCES on programs and online resources that are used in the classroom and at home and enhance learning. WXXI is also part of a national outreach effort called American Graduate, working to reduce the high school dropout rate. It’s these kinds of programs that are most at risk if we were to lose any federal funding.

I trust you agree that WXXI is worthy of support. If you’d like to share why public media matters to you, please visit the “Protect My Public Media” web site at protectmypublicmedia.org. You can learn more about the effort, tell your story, read testimonials from others and even write a letter to a Member of Congress.

I was recently quoted in the Rochester Business Journal as saying, “We have a relationship where people understand that our goal is to make this a better place to work and live for everybody.” From trusted news to special programming to educational efforts, WXXI proudly serves this region. With your membership support, we can continue to make a positive impact on our community. Thank you!

Best Regards,

STATE OF RE:UNION: THE POWER OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN ARTSUNDAY, FEB. 7 AT 9PM ON AM 1370In this special we recognize Black History Month through the lens of African-American art, the role it has played in social movements and everyday life, and why it matters both to the black community and the United States as a whole. From a poem celebrating Nina Simone and her powerful voice for social change, to the story of the surprising event that sparked the hip-hop cultural revolution, to unsung heroes of the culinary arts, SOTRU provides a rich hour of art as a window into African-American history.

An idea is the one gift that you can hang onto even after you’ve given it away. Welcome to TED Radio Hour hosted by Guy Raz (pictured) – a journey through fascinating ideas: astonishing inventions, fresh approaches to old problems, new ways to think and create.

Based on talks given by riveting speakers on the world-renowned TED stage, each show is centered on a common theme – such as the source of happiness, crowd-sourcing innovation, power shifts, or inexplicable connections – and injects soundscapes and conversations that bring these ideas to life.Credit: Kaina Zamaria

SHANgHAISPRINgWEDNESDAYS AT 8PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5, BEgINNINg FEBRUARY 17 This new radio series will take you to one of the most bustling and vibrant cities of the world today and give you a front-row seat at one of the preeminent events in its cultural calendar – the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival. Award-winning broadcaster and music journalist Paolo Pietropaolo will be your guide, leading you along the sun-dappled streets of Shanghai’s French Concession, where music comes streaming out of windows as city life unfolds below in a riot of color and noise.

This From the Top broadcast, taped at Kodak Hall in January, features the entire Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra led by Music Director Ward Stare, as well as performances and personal stories from extraordinary young classical musicians. One of the remarkable young musicians featured is 14-year-old Pittsford pianist Raymond Feng (pictured on the front cover). Feng recently performed with the RPO during the orchestra’s “Around the Town” community concert series. Feng has been a pupil of Elier Suárez since age five, and recently won first prizes in the Thousand Island Chopin International, the Oberlin Conservatory Cooper Piano Festival, the MTNA Eastern Division Junior Piano Performance, and Ithaca College Piano Competitions. He currently studies with RPO violinist Nancy Hunt and is concertmaster of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra. Photo: neale eCKstein
