SLIDE 1 RESEARCH FOCUS
Research QuestionWhat are the appropriate means and systems
to enable real time communication to and from the operating face of the mine,
to/from surface?
R&D value1. Deliver the RTIMS common core of an open source IIoT system royalty-
free, together with reference designs of motes and gateways that are secure, and manageable and form a stope network with appropriatecommunications and positioning.
2. Demonstrate the utility to the mines with one or two example use cases.
3. Deliver components at TRL 6 for OEMs/OTMs to take further and add point solutions that will be interoperable for mines rapidly (if mines adopt RTIMS core as a mining standard).

SLIDE 1RTIMS vs COMMERCIAL ECOSYSTEMS
• De-risking:–Long-term investment i.t.o. capex/opex–Address problem at source (stope, i.e. most difficult) and
then work our way upwards (where things become easier)
–Common standards• Efficiencies / productivity improvements:
–Common maintenance and ‘toolkits’–Making sense of data/information
• Improved Decisions Support and Decision Automation
6
SLIDE 1RTIMS vs COMMERCIAL ECOSYSTEMS
• Poor situational awareness underground• Smarter decision making and control of smart systems
required• Heavy ICT dependence breaking IT/OT separation with
IIoT• Cross-domain ICT systems have increased complexity and
interdependencies• Siloed ICT systems usually designed for single purpose
applications• Standards are in flux and new IIoT/CPS reference
architectures are only being created• Old and new challenges (e.g. security, POPI act) have to
be catered for• Non-enabling environment for decision-makers

Would you know what car all these components will form part of
without the foundational frame?
