EAGLES ARE FROZEN FOUR BOUND FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR~BC takes out Minnesota and Miami in Worcester; UNH downed by Notre Dame~ WAKEFIELD,Mass.--The No. 2 seed Boston College Eagles are headed for Denver, Colo. for the 2008 Frozen Four, as they advanced to their third straight Frozen Four after a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against No. 1 seed Miami Red Hawks on Sunday afternoon in the Northeast Regional Final at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. Freshman forward Joe Whitney (Reading, Mass.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Northeast Regional with three points (2g,1a), which included the overtime game-winner 12:12 into the extra frame to send the Eagles to the Pepsi Center in Denver. Whitney was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Nathan Gerbe (Oxford, Mich.) and Nick Petrecki (Clifton Park, N.Y.). The Eagles took down WCHA foe and No. 3 seed Minnesota on Saturday night. Pat Gannon (Arlington, Mass.), Benn Ferriero (Essex, Mass.), Gerbe and Whitney all had a team-high three points apiece in the first two games of the tournament. Freshman goaltender John Muse (East Falmouth, Mass.) continued his strong freshman campaign with a pair of wins with 65 saves and a .929 save percentage. Muse totaled 10 saves in the overtime session against the nation’s top-ranked offense. It marks BC’s 21st all-time trip to the Frozen Four in the program’s history. The Eagles became the 31st team in the 24 year history of the league to earn an appearance in the Frozen Four, as BC accounts for 10 of those appearances. The Eagles (23-11-8) will face No. 1 seed North Dakota (28-10-4) in the first NCAA semifinal game on Thursday, April 10 at the Pepsi Center (6 p.m.). Top overall seed Michigan will face Notre Dame in the late semifinal on Thursday night at 9.p.m. Both games will be televised live by ESPN2 and ESPN360. The NCAA Championship Game will be on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m. EST live on ESPN and ESPN360 from the Pepsi Center, home of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. No. 1 seed New Hampshire fell to No. 4 seed Notre Dame, 7-3, in the opening round of the West Regional at Colorado Springs World Arena on Friday night. Junior forward Jerry Pollastrone (Revere, Mass.) scored two of UNH’s three goals, while freshman forward James vanRiemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) registered helpers on all three of the Wildcat goals in the losing cause. The Wildcats end their season with a 25-10-3 overall record (69.7% win%), which is the fourth best winning percentage in college hockey this year.

Boston College: Boston College has advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the third consecutive season, for the eighth time in the last 11 years and for the 21st time in program history...BC captured its 54th and 55th postseason wins over the last 11 seasons and improved its winning per-centage to 78.7 percent (55-15). Three BC players, forward Nathan Gerbe, forward Joe Whitney and defenseman Nick Petrecki earned NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament team honors. Petrecki scored the team’s first goal against Miami and earned All-Tournament honors for the second time this season. Petrecki previously earned Dodge Holiday Classic All-Tourney Team laurels. Whitney is the second BC freshman to earn tournament MVP honors, joining classmate Brian Gibbons who captured 2008 Beanpot MVP accolades. Junior Nathan Gerbe has registered a career-high 60 points (30g,30a) in 41 games this season, joining Chris Collins (63; 2005-06) and Brian Gionta (60; 1998-99) and Marty Reasoner (73; 1997-98) as BC’s recent 60-point scorers...With one goal in each of two wins, sophomore Ben Smith (Avon, Conn.) has registered seven points (5g,2a) in six postseason games. Smith has tallied 17 points (9g,8a) in 14 career postseason games...Junior forward Benn Ferriero (Essex, Mass.) tallied a game-high three points (1g,2a) in the team’s 5-2 first-round win over Minnesota and has totaled nine points (5g,4a) in six postseason games. Ferriero has registered 19 points (10g,9a) in 14 postseason contests over the last two seasons. Senior forward Pat Gannon tallied three points (1g,2a) in BC’s two wins and has 22 points this season. Gannon assisted on two of four BC goals, including the overtime gamewinner, scored against Miami in the NCAA Northeast Regional final. NewHampshire: UNH closed out the 2007-08 season with 25 wins for the second-straight season...Junior forward Jerry Pollastrone netted a pair of goals in the loss to No. 12 Notre Dame. Pollastrone tallied seven of this 15 goals in the final four games...James vanRiemsdyk notched assists on all three UNH goals, matching a career-high. VanRiemsdyk had eight assists in the last four games and closed out the season notching a point in seven of his last eight games...The three goals scored is the most by the Wildcats in the NCAAs in the last three seasons.
HockeyEastintheNCAATournamentNotes: Hockey East has now placed 74 teams all-time in the NCAA Tournament since 1985 with four of its teams winning NCAA titles. A total of 33 of those teams have qualified for the Frozen Four...Most recently, Boston College won the NCAA Championship back in 2001, along with Maine in 1993 and 1999 and Boston University in 1995. Hockey East Teams owns a 96-85-1 all-time mark in NCAA Tournament play...Hockey East has been represented by at least one team in the NCAA championship game in 10 of the last 11 years, and each of eight straight years from 1997 to 2004. That is the most consecutive appearances in the title game by any conference since the inception of Hockey East in 1984-85...Hockey East has boasted 15 of the 30 teams that have advanced to the championship game since 1993.
