Familiar With the Beard Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard’s resumé includes stints at two current Southland schools. Raised in Irving, Texas, Beard’s coaching career began as an assistant at Incarnate Ward (1995-96) followed by a stint at Abilene Christian (1996-97). Beard then served as an assistant at former Southland school North Texas. He worked under the guidance of Danny Kasper at UIW, Shanon Hays at ACU and Vic Trilli at UNT. Beard completed his master’s degree in education at Abilene Christian in 1998. Destination Hub City Two Southland Conference schools will travel to Lubbock, Texas, this week to play No. 11 Texas Tech. Northwestern State will take on the Red Raiders in 6:30 p.m. CT tilt Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena. Abilene Christian will visit the Big 12 foe Saturday in the Red Raiders’ annual Throwback Game at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum at 6 p.m. Saturday’s contest will be the final game played at the arena before it is torn down to make way for new construction. Tech called the coliseum home from 1956-99. Both teams will be wearing throwback uniforms with ACU’s paying tribute to some of the best teams in program history. Chris Beard’s squad is familiar with Southland competition, squaring off against UIW in an exhibition in November before defeating Southeastern Louisiana 59-40 on Nov. 13 in the Hall of Fame Classic regional round. Last year’s Red Raiders team defeated Southland tournament champion Stephen F. Austin 70-60 in Dallas in NCAA tournament first-round action en route to an Elite Eight appearance. ACU enters the week second nationally in field goal percentage (52.4 percent). Stealing From a Friend New Orleans snapped an 11-game losing streak to South Alabama with its 71-60 win last Wednesday (Nov. 28), fueled by stingy defense that restricted the Jaguars to 33-percent shooting in the second half. UNO is fourth nationally in steals per game (11 per contest). The matchup pitted two most recent Southland coaches of the year, Privateers’ head man Mark Slessinger and South Alabama’s Richie Riley. The duo led their respective teams to the last two Southland regular-season titles. New Orleans claimed the regular season and tournament titles two seasons ago, while Riley led Nicholls to a regular season championship (along with Southeastern Louisiana) a season ago. Riley left Thibodeaux last March for Mobile and the Jaguars. Week Six Schedule

2018 Players of the WeekShannon Bogues - Stephen F. Austin - Sr. - G - Killeen, Texas

Bogues drained 12-of-18 shots, including an SFA program-record nine three-pointers, in a 96-93 loss to Louisiana Tech on Friday (Dec. 7). The guard tallied 33 points while dishing out seven assists in a career-high 44 minutes of action. The Killeen, Texas, product’s nine makes from beyond the arc are just two shy of the Southland record of 11 (SHSU’s Corey Almond, SHSU vs. Kentucky in 2009; LU’s Mike James vs. Louisiana College in 2011). Bogues, currently averaging 16.6 points per game, is a member of the 2018-19 Southland Preseason All-Conference team. Last year, he earned all-conference honors and selected to the Southland all-tournament team.
