Respect for Self Respect for Others Respect for Property Message from the Principal 5 July 2019 Dear Parents/Caregivers Another term has come to an end and it doesn't seem that long ago that we were gearing up for the Ball back in week two! I have to say a huge well done and thank you to all the cast and crew involved in our production of Back to the 80s. It was thoroughly entertaining and a huge team effort. It was great to see our students having such fun. I also mentioned this in this week s assembly along with our Choir, and Kapa Haka group who are attending Polyfest in August. We have lot of talent at NSC and I am very appreciative that staff are continually putting the extra time in and ensuring our students have the opportunity to perform. The fundraising focus for next year s Waimumu is for sound and lighting equipment which will enhance future productions. In Terms 3 and 4, the planning for Waimumu will ramp up so please get involved with the PTA when the call comes out. It is a major fundraiser and hugley benefits our students. Mid-year reports are being emailed home today. The detail in these should give you a clear idea of how your children are progressing. Our parent teacher interviews are the first Wednesday back next term which is an opportunity to discuss these reports further. Please email [email protected] if you would like a paper copy provided. Yesterday we bode farewell to Mrs Prestwich. It is unfortunate that she wasn't able to spend more time at NSC but we wish her well in her retirement. We have appointed Mr Coad as HOD Mathematics. He is currently teaching at St Kentigern College in Auckland and will join us at the end of Term 3. Mr Coad is also a Physics teacher so will be an asset for us. The end of this term means it has been 3 years since I joined the NSC family. It certainly doesn't feel that long and I still see it as an absolute privilege to lead the College. I am motivated to continually be looking at how we can improve and for NSC to be the number one choice for all students in the Northern Southland area. I would challenge anyone who says students don't get a good deal at NSC. Have a safe and happy holidays everyone. Message from the Principal 5 July 2019

Dear Parents/Caregivers Another term has come to an end and it doesn't seem that long ago that we were gearing up for the Ball back in week two! I have to say a huge well done and thank you to all the cast and crew involved in our production of Back to the 80s. It was thoroughly entertaining and a huge team effort. It was great to see our students having such fun. I also mentioned this in this week’s assembly along with our Choir, and Kapa Haka group who are attending Polyfest in August. We have lot of talent at NSC and I am very appreciative that staff are continually putting the extra time in and ensuring our students have the opportunity to perform. The fundraising focus for next year’s Waimumu is for sound and lighting equipment which will enhance future productions. In Terms 3 and 4, the planning for Waimumu will ramp up so please get involved with the PTA when the call comes out. It is a major fundraiser and hugley benefits our students. Mid-year reports are being emailed home today. The detail in these should give you a clear idea of how your children are progressing. Year 7 and 8 Visual Art Students

Year 7 & 8 Visual Art

students made some

fantastic art works over the

last two terms including

these stunning personal

identity Tapa Design

inspired masterpieces.

Year 9 & 10 Design and

Visual Communication

Year 9 & 10 Design and

Visual Communication

Students happily showing off

some of their highly skilled

perspective drawings and

2020 Winter Olympic Games

Trophy Design projects.

I have been very impressed by the high level of engagement and

strong work ethic that Northern Southland Colleges Junior Visual

Art students possess. Their level of skill and understanding

towards their own developing artistic practice is admirable.

Equally, the Year 9 & 10 Northern Southland College Design and

Visual Communication (Graphics) students have shown great

success over the last two terms. Overall their 1, 2 & 3 Point

Perspective Drawings have been executed to a very high

standard while their introduction to Sketch-Up has had them

create stunning 3-Dimensional model bridges, houses and even

ships. But perhaps what I was most impressed by, was their main

research and design project where Year 9 students designed

their own personal logo and Year 10 students designed medals

and trophies for the 2020 Winter Olympic Games. Throughout

this process, students gained a good understanding of the design

process and learnt to critically evaluate their own work and more

established designers work also.

Come and check out both the Visual Art and Design & Visual

Communication students’ work exhibiting now at The Ramp

Gallery (formally known as the Art Room Foyer).

Production Way back in January an idea started to take form and was finally realised last Thursday and Friday nights when the cast and crew presented the musical extravaganza ‘Back to the 80s’ to full houses. Months of ‘working 9 to 5’ paid off as the cast performed their parts like they were ‘footloose’, ‘walking on sunshine’, and ‘just wanting to have fun’ . We are fortunate to have so many talented singers, dancers and actors - backed up by a great crew. All in all, over 50 students took part or helped put the show on. We

would like to thank everybody who helped out in so many different ways to bring the performance together. Thank you - ‘we had the time of our lives’! Miss Eason and Ms Mee

St John Youth District Competition Congratulations to Harrison Maclean for achieving fantastic results at the St John Youth District Competitions in Bluff after about 4 weeks notice and prep. He came first in his Written Test, Medical, and Trauma. He was also Overall Champion for Individual Intermediate Competitor and has qualified for the Regional Competition in September. Well done, Harrison. We know who to call on in an emergency.

Debating Congratulations to NSC Year 8 Debating team, who beat Blue Mountain College today. The moot was "That cars are a luxury we can do without" and we were the affirmative team. Well done!

Mrs Christine Henderson the judge of the debate, summing up and delivering the result.

Readers Cup 2019 On Thursday 4 July, Jordan Kington, Mitch Salviejo, Makenzie Appleyard-Drake & Sweekriti Sunar competed in the Readers’ Cup competition. The girls each had to read at least one of the chosen 6 books and were quizzed as a team over 6 rounds ( one round per book). Although we did not finish in the top three, all the girls enjoyed their books and the quiz.

NSC Grounds

The College Grounds will

be CLOSED to the public

during the July holiday

break. This is a Health and

Safety requirement while

roofing and boiler repairs

are carried out.

However, the turf will still

be available.

Clay Target Shooting

Tomorrow we have a group of seven students competing in the

South Island’s Secondary Schools’ Clay Target Shooting

Championships in Invercargill, starting at 9am, with some skeet

shooting. Josh Bennett, Connor Appleyard-Drake, Patrick Colligan,

Brooklyn Neumann, Kyle Hansen, William Drummond and Cade

McLachlan are taking part and we wish them all the best.

Most of these students plus some who play rugby on Saturdays, are shooting at Nightcaps Intercollegiate shoot on Sunday. We wish them all the best also.

NSC Young Farmers’ Club Quiz

Keep Friday 2 August free for the NSC Young Farmers’ Club Quiz,

which is becoming an annual event. The 22 members are busy

collecting prizes for the raffle. This year the Young Farmers are

raising money for the St John Ambulance as well as helping

provide a contribution towards signature jerseys for new members

and perhaps hats or ties for senior members.

So come along and answer some farming, sporting and general

knowledge questions and enjoy a good night out.

Year 9 Volleyball Tournament On the last Thursday of this term, both Year 9 classes participated in a fierce class vs class tournament. This tournament was the end of the 5 week volleyball unit. The tension and excitement was clear with every point won. Both teams showed excellent teamwork, volleyball skills, and sportsmanship throughout the game, that spanned over 2 whole periods. Results wise, the 9S class took a close 1st set, much to the students’ surprise. The 2nd set was won by 9N comfortably, after 9S made numerous mistakes around serving. The 3rd and 4th sets were very close but both narrowly went to 9N, which meant 9N is our year 9 volleyball champions. The last 2 sets had only 2 points in them, the last set going to 24-22. The tournament was a great end to the unit and both classes are eager for the next one.
