After winning the 2011 Big Ten regular season title, Northwestern kept its momentum going in the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Ar-bor, Mich. As the No. 1 seed, NU received a bye in the first round, setting up a tough second round match with No. 4 seed Indiana. The Hoosiers got on the board first, scoring in the first half but much like they did all season, the Wildcats came back late in the game. NU knotted the score at 1-1 at the 76:59 mark thanks to an Indiana own goal. Lepe Seetane took a shot from the left side that an IU player tried to clear but the ball bounced off IU goalie Luis Soffner and into the net.

Two overtime periods later, the game went to PKs and the drama continued as an extra round of PKs was needed to determine who would advance. Nick Gendron scored the winning PK and goalkeeper Tyler Miller came up with some huge saves, helping the ’Cats advance to the finals against No. 7 seed Penn State.

In the finals, NU trailed 1-0 going into the break but stepped upin the second half with two goals by the senior leaders. Peter O’Neill tied the score at 1-1 after converting a penalty kick and Oliver Kupe scored the game- winning goal at the 73:23 mark, giving NU the 2-1 win and Big Ten Tournament title on the same field the team won the regular season title, the U-M Soccer Field.
