TESTING AND INTERPRETING MODERATIONS/INTERACTIONS
Suzanne King and Guillaume Elgbeili
It is common in our research that one variable will moderate the effects of another variable on an outcome. In this one-hour presentation, Suzanne will present background on the importance of testing statistical interactions to answer questions about “for whom” or “under what conditions” the association between a predictor and an outcome is significant. Guillaume will introduce the PROCESS macro used in SPSS to test interactions and will demonstrate who to identify regions of significance. Suzanne will explain the difference between interactions that support “vulnerability-stress” or “differential susceptibility” hypotheses, and Guillaume will show how to test these hypotheses statistically. Examples from their studies on prenatal maternal stress will be used to illustrate these principles and techniques.
